Polio

Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.

On October 24, 2020 Rotarians around the world will be celebrating their fight against ending polio in their clubs and communities. Last year 4,000 clubs in 136 countries organized more than 5,900 events to raise AWARENESS and FUNDS.

This is a challenging time in most parts of the world due to COVID-19 impact in our everyday life and our economy. We need your help to raise awareness and funds.

PolioPlus

For more than 30 years, Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Our PolioPlus program was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication by vaccinating children on a massive scale. As a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and awareness-building.

Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Challenges

Rotary and our partners have made tremendous progress against polio, but eliminating all cases is going to take even more progress and perseverance. Afghanistan and Pakistan face unique challenges, including political insecurity, highly mobile populations, difficult terrain, and, in some instances, vaccine refusal and misinformation. With sufficient resources, the commitment of national governments, and innovations that improve access to remote areas, we are optimistic that we can eliminate polio.

Ensuring Success

Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total commitment of $150 million each year. These funds provide much-needed operational support, medical workers, laboratory equipment, and educational materials. Governments, corporations, and private donors all play a crucial role in funding.

Rotary in Action

More than 1 million Rotary members have donated their time and money to eradicate polio, and every year, hundreds of members work with health workers to vaccinate children in countries affected by polio.

Rotary members work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute informational materials for people in areas that are isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. They also mobilize to recruit fellow volunteers, assist in transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.

We filled 30 maxi bins, which is equal to 40 wooden bins - a full truckload of apples!

Join us for the fun of it... our weekly gathering is Wednesday 7:45am. We welcome guests...

LFP Rotary Club and a river of crows

Sunday, September 6, 2020

The UW Bothell loves its crows

By Cynthia Sheridan

“Crow Communication in Social Aggregations” presented by Asst Professor Doug Wacker

Asst. Prof Doug Wacker and crow
UW Bothell is home to Doug Wacker, Assistant Professor of Animal Behavior, and UW Bothell is also home to a large nocturnal crow roost on the adjacent North Creek Wetlands Restoration, likely consisting of ten to 15 thousand crows in the winter.

Recently Doug presented this fascinating crow story to the Lake Forest Park Rotarians via Zoom, including some amazing crow-crowded pictures.

He discussed challenging his students, who operate in pairs, to look for the “predictable rivers of crows” as the birds form pre- and post-roost aggregations.

Another challenge is to follow the crows and determine where they are coming from and how far they travel on their daily visits to the roost.

Crows flying home to UW Bothell at sunset

Although Kenmore is a hot spot, these crows travel as much as 40 miles to roost at the UW Bothell campus. Students study how crows communicate on these aggregations and, more generally, how crows combine vocal and non-vocal behaviors to communicate in social groups.

Crows have dozens of distinct calls, with multiple variations in pitch and volume. It’s clear whether they’re scolding a predator or begging for food.

Undergraduate research assistants are recording audio and video of crows from a variety of contexts, and analyzing their data using audio analysis software.

In the future, they hope to incorporate the use of crow models and telemetry to further decipher whether and how crows might share information in social aggregations.

The returning ‘rivers” of crows are timed with sunset and leave the Bothell roost before sunrise.

Sometimes ground roosting leads to occupation of the sports field on campus but the nearby North Creek Wetlands Reserve is the crows’ communal roost.

The crows will occasionally roost on the athletic fields but they normally roost in the wetlands on campus.

Winter is the best time to see the crows in action. According to the professor, incoming freshman are especially startled and impressed by UW Bothell’s unique aviary population.

Author Herb Bryce will be the speaker

Join Shoreline Rotary for a Zoom Meeting Wednesday morning, September 9, 2020. Our meeting starts at 7:30am with President Robert Brouillard and Club Secretary and Greeter Clarita Bhat ringing the bell!

You can use your computer, your smart phone or even a regular phone to join in the fun (see the NEW zoom link and NEW instructions below).

When you were a child, did you have the freedom to run barefoot among clover flowers full of bees, try drowning yourself on a homemade raft, or ride your horse across a field pock-marked with gopher holes?
If you did, then you can count yourself among the lucky survivors.

Our speaker for this meeting is one of those lucky ones!

Herb Bryce, former Dean of Science and Mathematics at Seattle Central College and long-time Shoreline resident, has written his memoire, “Me and The Cottonwood Tree: An Untethered Boyhood,” proving that it’s possible to live through an adventurous childhood and come out on the adult side relatively unscathed.

Herb’s stories of his daring deeds and subsequent lessons learned will absolutely delight you. Please welcome Herb Bryce to our virtual podium.

Dr JP Mahar, President
Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

You are invited...
Lake Forest Park Rotary Zoom Meeting
This is a recurring meeting every Wednesday after 7:45 AM

Join Zoom Meeting

Meeting ID: 225 797 7384

Lake Forest Park Rotary welcomes its new president, Dr. JP Mahar. Dr. Mahar has run Kenmore chiropractic since 1994. His University background includes the US Naval Academy, UC Berkeley, and finally at the University of Oregon. His passions include rugby, gardening, and barbecue! He is often likened to another beloved local denizen, JP Patches, as they both have focused their Lifeskills on Family, Friends, and Fun.

Dr. Mahar takes over from the previous president, and a fabulous one she was, Robin Roat. A commonality they both share is the healing power of laughter.

As JP takes over, Robin Roat steps in to lead the membership committee, aided by Ben Clough.

The Board of Directors is also staffed with other extremely intelligent and generous Rotarians:
  • Heidi Shepherd and Christy Piscitelli are the youth service chair.
  • Karen Edwardsen and Claire Conway are the Ed./Vocational service chair.
  • Linda Holman and Judy Altman co-chair the community service committee.
  • Ed Sterner and Larry French are the International chairs,
  • Alan Merry is the district events coordinator, and
  • the club treasurer is Ed Belcher, and
  • the club secretary is Larry French.

Dr. Mahar recognizes the fact that without the support of the above-mentioned people, his job would be impossible. JP is delighted to have them in his life. Dr. Mahar would welcome you to join us for a fun and stimulating weekly meeting... you are sure to be entertained.

Go to lakeforestparkrotary.com for information on meeting schedules, project updates, and service experiences. This is also a great place to learn about the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park’s membership opportunities.

Rotary Gift Card Challenge has exceeded its goal

Monday, May 25, 2020

Thank you Shoreline/LFP Community!

Thanks to our amazingly generous and caring community, the Rotary Gift Card Challenge has exceeded its goal and raised an incredible $30,672 to support students and families in need!

The 30-day challenge, ending May 15, 2020 was initiated with a $5,000 donation by Shoreline Rotary, as well as a $2,500 donation from Lake Forest Park Rotary and $1,000 from a Rotary District 5030 COVID-19 grant, for a total of $8,500 in Rotary support.

With contributions from over 100 generous individuals and organizations, the overall goal of $20,000 was easily met and exceeded!

The Rotary Gift Card Challenge encouraged donations through Embrace Shoreline Schools to purchase gift cards which were then distributed by school-based Family Advocates to students and families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program, created by Shoreline PTA Council in partnership with Embrace Shoreline Schools and the school district, serves over 300 families, ensuring flexible spending support for needed items, such as paper goods, household items, gas and groceries.

Shoreline PTA Council is grateful for the longstanding and close partnership it has had with our local Rotary Clubs.

Through their individual and collective support, many district-wide programs are made possible, including our Back to School event, Holiday Baskets and our free clothing bank (The WORKS).

Thank you, Rotary Clubs of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park – and thank you to our generous community!

Shoreline Rotary to hear about Music4Life program - Wednesday on Zoom

Monday, April 13, 2020

Music4Life presentation at Shoreline Rotary Wednesday

Join in the fun of a Zoom Rotary Meeting Wednesday morning, April 15, 2020. The meeting starts at 7:30am with Andrew ringing the bell.

All Friends and Rotarians Welcome!

After club doings and the virtual Goose, we welcome David Endicott, the president of Music4Life, a District 5030-wide program begun by David, Ken Noreen and others who recognize the importance of fostering a love and understanding of music in young people.

Music4Life’s mission is to “provide donated and repaired musical instruments at no charge to public school districts for use by students in need.”
But it really is much more than that. As we have learned from our own experiences with music, and just as the Music4Life website states, “music education helps a person lead a richer, fuller, more meaningful life — and an arts-rich community is a more desirable place to live.”

David, a member and current president of the Puget Sound Passport Rotary Club, will give us an update on Music4Life projects. Here’s another great way that Rotary makes a difference in our community - come and see our friend, David, or meet him for the first time, virtually. See you Wednesday!

How to access Shoreline Rotary Zoom meetings for April 15th and beyond
