Eagle Scout candidate initiates project to assist homebound seniors during COVID-19 crisis

Friday, April 3, 2020

Eagle Scout Candidate Andrew W is leading an Eagle Scout Project to provide needed food resources for needy homebound seniors in Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.

The project, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park, will benefit seniors being served by the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center. The senior center is now the primary lifeline to provide needed meals, food and supplies to homebound seniors.

Theresa La Croix, Senior Center Director, notes that this Eagle Scout Project comes at a critical time when the senior center had to cease in-person operations due to the COVID-19, leaving many seniors without the food and service support that the center offers every week.

Funding and resources were never meant to provide for the unique and vast need required by the COVID-19 crisis.

She notes that KC Public Health Directives severely limit the way staff and volunteers can even interact with seniors on a face to face basis when dropping off food.

The center cleans all the food donated, prepares some meals for delivery and prepares the weekly food boxes for delivery. Seniors cannot pick up food at the center as the center itself is closed to the public by health order.

Currently, Ballinger Thriftway on Ballinger Way has allowed a donation box in their store to collect donations.

Andrew is working with other grocery stores and retailers to either donate fresh food or place other collection boxes. The senior center also needs certain fresh items to supplement the food boxes.

When Andrew found out that some of the seniors could not lift
the food boxes or bend down to get the food, he had tables
built for their front porches.

In an unexpected twist to his project, Andrew was told that food was being left on the doorstep of elderly disabled seniors who could not lift the 20-pound box much less bend down to get the food.

He had volunteers build small 2’ X 2’ tables to place on the porch for the food box so these seniors could safely get their food. All the tables were built with donated wood and labor.

Andrew has a web page for more information about his project and information on how to donate food, supplies or make a cash donation.

The Lake Forest Park Rotary Charitable Foundation can receive tax deductible cash donations for this project.

All funds received will go to benefit COVID-19 emergency senior services in Lake Forest Park and Shoreline - particularly homebound and needy seniors served by the Senior Center, which is in desperate need of resources.

Andrew is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 309 in Shoreline WA. Information about his project and how you can help can be found HERE

To contact Andrew or ask questions please contact his Scoutmaster (and Rotarian) Dwight Thompson at dthompson@reswa.org or 206-399-9477.

Rotary cancels its international convention in face of COVID-19 pandemic

Thursday, March 19, 2020

The Rotary international Board of Directors has cancelled the 2020 Rotary International Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

President Mark Daniel Maloney said "We are all part of the Rotary family, and your safety remains our highest priority. Like the more than 20,000 registrants who planned to attend this year’s convention, I am very disappointed. However, this is the right and necessary decision to protect the health and safety of convention attendees, as well as those who call Honolulu home."

They were concerned about adequately protecting convention-goers from the risk of COVID-19 infection en route to, during, and after the convention. They were also concerned that restrictions on travel to the United States would be lifted by June.

We are exploring how we can share a convention-like experience with you through a virtual event, which could be a great example of us following the Rotary Action Plan goal of increasing our ability to adapt. We will have more to say on this in the near future.

Rotary has a global network with 1.2 million members.

Shoreline Rotary cancels their breakfast meetings and feeds Shoreline Community College students instead

Sunday, March 15, 2020

Victoria Stiles at Shoreline Rotary reports that the money originally budgeted for the March 11, 18, and 25 cancelled breakfast meetings was spent to feed hungry college students in Shoreline.

The board authorized the use of our normal breakfast expenditures to provide students living on campus at the Shoreline Community College with a “grab-and-go” breakfast, and some Starbucks coffee.
Andrew Thurman, and Bill and Judy MacCully were there to make sure the food got into the hands of hungry students, and a repeat is expected for next week and the following week.

In addition the Shoreline Rotary Board delivered $500 in food gift cards to the Family Advocate at Parkwood to help families who are struggling.

The board will be looking for other opportunities to be people of action and help the local community.

Rotary Club of LFP hears about new Community Court

Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Judge Joseph Campagna in the desire to
develop the best possible local court system.

On February 26, 2020, District Court Judge Joe Campagna spoke at the meeting of the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park on the topic of the new Shoreline Community Court.

King County Community Court in Shoreline is an alternative problem-solving court.

It seeks to go beyond punishment to identify and address the underlying challenges that may contribute to an individual’s further criminal activity.

Court is held in Shoreline City Hall. The setting is less intimidating and allows the judge to be seated at eye-level with people.

The court addresses things like theft, shoplifting, trespassing, and other low-level offenses.

Traditionally, individuals are punished for crimes like these. However, the punishment often doesn’t address why the crime is happening.

Community Court participants can sign up at the community resource center in the lobby for services such as drug and alcohol treatment, financial/housing assistance, and employment services.

This approach allows people to get services that help address the underlying issues that may have led to the criminal activity. Participants are also often required to perform community service to foster community engagement.

LFP Rotary meets every Wednesday morning, 7:10am for a program speaker and breakfast at Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church.

The mission of Veterans for Peace includes "dedication to building a culture of peace, exposing the true costs of war, and healing the wounds of war." They strongly condemn US action in Iran. Please see their Statement of Purpose and much more information at their website.

Shoreline Rotary to hear from Project Manager of Sound Transit's BRT connection on Wednesday

Saturday, February 8, 2020

Paul Cornish will speak at
Shoreline Rotary Wednesday

You may have noticed that there’s a lot of construction happening in the City of Shoreline and throughout the North End, particularly when it comes to the new light rail system.

The project is taking the concerted efforts of several different agencies - government and otherwise - to get accomplished, and sometimes us regular citizens might feel as if we’re not getting the whole picture.

Enter our guest speaker Paul Cornish from Sound Transit, who will give a presentation about certain aspects of the light rail project that we might not really know about.

Paul was the Light Rail Development Manager for the East Link Extension, and is now the Project Director for Sound Transit’s first Bus Rapid Transit Program, which is scheduled to premiere in 2024.

SR 522/NE 145th Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will serve growing north Lake Washington communities. With buses planned to run as often as every 10 minutes, this new service connects to Link light rail at Shoreline South/145th as well as to other transit service provided by Sound Transit, Community Transit and King County Metro. The project includes additional parking at Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and Bothell.

This is a great opportunity to hear directly from someone who’s in charge! Invite your business associates and neighbors to catch this important program and meet Paul Cornish.

Wednesday morning, February 12, 2020 at the Shoreline Community College PUB. Our meeting starts at 7am with breakfast and camaraderie; the formal program starts at 7:30am.

Bring the kids to the Shoreline Rotary meeting Wednesday morning

Monday, February 3, 2020

Author Nancy Strom will be at
Shoreline Rotary Wednesday
Join the Shoreline Rotary on Wednesday morning, February 5, 2020 at the Shoreline Community College PUB, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133

The meeting starts at 7:00am with breakfast and camaraderie; the formal program starts at 7:30am.

Perhaps it’s been a long time since you thought about talking animals. Or maybe you are the lucky keeper of small children in your life, and you think about talking animals all the time!
In either case, we think you’re going to enjoy a fun half hour with Nancy Strom, author of “Scooter and Friends Take a Vacation,” featuring Scooter and her friends Murphy, Betsy and Bandit.

The simple premise of the book is that “a red fox pup, a hedgehog, a beaver, and a raccoon go on their first vacation, and while on their trek they encounter a bit more adventure than they originally anticipated.”

But underlying the storyline is a celebration of diversity and inclusion that “rewards teamwork, shows the value of listening (and) taking advice, and to not be afraid to try something new.”

The website for the book says “ 'Scooter and Friends Take a Vacation' is a fun romp for children and adults of all ages, and includes some valuable life lessons.”

Bring your favorite kid to meet and hear Nancy Strom if you like - all family members and friends welcome!

LFP Rotary hears about motivational programs for youth from golf organization

Tuesday, January 28, 2020

On January 22, 2020, Lake Forest Park Rotary heard from speaker Joshua Field, center in the photo (with the golf club!).

Pictured with Joshua are Rotary President Robin Roat, LFP Police Chief Mike Harden, Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman, and Support Services Lieutenant Diego Zanella.

Field is Outreach Director for The First Tee of Greater Seattle (TFTGS), part of the World Golf Foundation. Its mission is to impact the lives of youth with programs that build character, instill values, and promote healthy choices through playing golf.

They have nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment. They also emphasize nine healthy habits that fall under the categories of Physical, Emotional, and Social.

With training like this, these golfers will grow up to be great Rotarians. Here you see President Elect JP Mahar demonstrating how it's done - perfect, JP!

The officers informed us of the rollicking success of "Shop with a Cop," a fine program that brings joy each year to underprivileged members of our community. Go to Facebook to learn more and see great photos of the event.

The Dippers of the Dock - LFP Rotary takes the plunge

Monday, January 13, 2020

Yup, they did it.

The conservative approach

In spite of dropping temperatures, impending snow, and possible hypothermia, LFP Rotary members and friends took the plunge for charity in the first ever Rotary Polar Bear Dip.

The jump right in approach

On Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 2pm the intrepid few ran into the cold waters of Lake Washington. A few went for full immersion and jumped off the dock at the Sheridan Community Center.

The expression says it all

Happily, after a brief time in the invigorating waters, all returned safely to shore.

The KCSO Marine rescue unit was there to make sure
that everyone returned to shore

Now they will collect the pledges from friends, family, and co-workers and donate the funds to the EndPolioNow.org project.

Volunteers on land

The fight to end polio is led by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), which includes Rotary, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world, with the support of many others around the globe.

Shoreline Rotary to hear about college mentoring program at Wednesday meeting

Sunday, January 5, 2020

Join us Wednesday morning, January 8, 2020 at the Shoreline Community College Pagoda Union Building (PUB), 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Meetings start at 7am with breakfast and camaraderie; and formal program starts at 7:30am.

Children are the future, as we all know. But what goes into preparing them for their roles as responsible adults and contributing members of society?

Even in stable families there may not always be easy answers, but for kids who are struggling with economic, social and other challenges, the answer to that question may be even harder.

The organization M.U.S.T., which stands for Mentoring Urban Students And Teens, was created by Mercer Island Rotarian Rick Newell to help mitigate those challenges, giving at-risk kids a leg up for their futures.

Right now, the mission of M.U.S.T. is to find responsible African American men in college to help spring kids free from the hardest generational cycles of poverty through long-term paid mentoring.

Ultimately, their mission will be expanded to include Latino, Pacific Islander and Native American mentors who can assist youths in those communities as well.

Rick will tell us all about how M.U.S.T. is working, and their plans for the future. This program on M.U.S.T. will be of interest to every educator, and everyone who cares about getting kids off on the right foot!

Everyone is welcome to attend.
