Zero Waste Washington presentation

On Wednesday morning, December 11, 2019, speaker Heather Trim from Zero Waste Washington spoke to the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park to explain ZWW's mission to make systematic changes that have lasting impacts.

This means they work on laws and programmatic changes rather than focusing on individual behavior change.

Zero Waste envisions a just and sustainable world where society responsibly produces, consumes and recycles. Achieving Zero Waste plays a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It saves natural resources.

Less waste means less plastic pollution and fewer toxic chemicals in our environment.

Zero Waste Washington protects people and our natural world by advocating for products designed and produced to be healthy, safe, and continually recycled and reused. "We are the public’s voice for zero waste."

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park meets weekly for breakfast at the Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church. Visitors are welcome.

Composed of various colors of green plastic bottles, the sculpture calls attention to the importance of the smallest lifeforms responsible for our clean environment.

As the artist mentions in her statement, diatoms found in “kelp and phytoplankton create 70% of the earth’s oxygen.”

The artwork will be on display through the winter and spring at Rotary Park along NE 185th just west of 10th Ave NE, the pocket park by the old Mower shop.

Rotary clubs to hear about earthquakes

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

Shoreline Rotary will join Lake Forest Park Rotary Wednesday morning October 23, 2019, 7-8:30am at the Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church to hear a very important speaker. The church is located at 17440 Brookside Boulevard NE in Lake Forest Park.

Whether you love the excitement of Mother Nature’s shake-ups, or loathe the unpredictability of such events, earthquakes are probably here to stay.

Steve Malone, seismologist
Seismologist Steve Malone, Director Emeritus of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and Professor Emeritus of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington, has made it his life’s work to study and understand earthquakes.

Dr. Malone has been involved with the experiments in which scientists used the human-caused “earthquakes” at Seahawks Stadium to figure out how quickly they could warn of an impending quake.

"The Seahawks experiment should provide us and the Internet-connected public with a feel for the minimum time early warning might provide," said Steve Malone in 2015.

Now, seismologists may soon be ready to finalize their efforts on the first real early warning system. While it can’t exactly predict an earthquake, it could give us a head start for cover when an earthquake is just beginning.

Steve will explain how the system operates and what they’re still working on. Now in the testing phase, it could be available in the Pacific Northwest in a year or so!

Visitors are welcome!

Last farmers market of the season Sunday at LFP Farmers Market

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Photo courtesy Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

LFP Police Chief Mike Harden and LFP Mayor Jeff Johnson teamed up to tell people about Lake Forest Park at a recent Sunday Farmers Market at Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Besides a possible sighting of mayors or police chiefs, there's plenty going on at the LFP Farmers Market and Sunday, October 20 from 10am to 3pm is your last chance to experience an outdoor market this season.

All the produce at the market comes from growers who are either certified organic or in the process of being certified. You can trust what you buy.

The flowers are wonderful. Some vendors have created variety bouquets, some let you choose what you want. Fresh cut that day, they will last for several weeks (if you remember to keep water in the vase...)

There are usually 4-5 places with ready to eat food, not including the ice cream. You can buy fish, and sometimes meat. You can buy gifts, either of food like honey or jam, or crafts.

There are places under canopies to sit and eat and the people watching is great! There are buskers to entertain while you shop.

Happily, it isn't really the end. The Commons sponsors two indoor markets - one in November and one in December.

Plan for dinner out on Oct 24 to support Rotary fundraiser to end polio

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Buy dinner at Lake Forest Bar and Grill on World Polio Day Thursday, October 24, 2019 and 20% will go to the Rotary project to End Polio Now.

Lake Forest Park Rotary has been deeply involved in the International Rotary project to end polio. Several members have traveled to Africa to personally help immunize babies.

They are very close to their goal.

Since 1988, there has been a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9%. For more than two years, there have been wild polio cases in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The fight to end polio is led by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), which includes Rotary, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world, with the support of many others around the globe.

And now, we have the chance to help, just by eating dinner!
