Silje Sodal named Community Champion by City of Shoreline

Wednesday, September 11, 2024

On August 16, 2024 the City of Shoreline awarded Silje Sodal the Community Champion Award.

Silje Sodal has been a mainstay in the north end human services scene for decades – from her service in the schools to leading an array of human services initiatives – she has made her presence known. For her work as a volunteer in the Shoreline Public Schools, she was awarded the Golden Acorn Award and the Outstanding Advocate Award.

Most importantly, Silje served as the Executive Director the North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA) from January 2018 until July of 2024. During that period, she expanded board membership and partnerships with providers, school districts, faith organizations, and the five north King County cities.

Through her direction, NUHSA advocated for expanded tenant protections in member cities, worked to create a north end severe weather shelter to serve our most vulnerable, and brought attention to the needs of the north end in important King County grant funding processes.

While Silje recently transitioned to the Executive Director role at Third Place Commons, we know she will remain involved in the needs of the north end communities, including Shoreline.

By Robin Roat

On September 4, 2024  LAKE FOREST PARK ROTARY celebrated its 38th birthday. Julie Hungar gave a historical presentation on our club's continual service to the LFP community. Thank you to Julie Hungar and to her husband who was one of the original members 38 years ago.

Our speaker was Master Artist Tony Angell. Aloft and At Rest, a new sculpture by Tony Angell, celebrates 50 years of exhibiting with Foster/White.

Angell's representations of birds provide both scientific accuracy and a virtuoso sense of the inner temperament of his subjects to convey their intangible spirit and resilience.

Tony Angell’s work is featured in dozens of gallery and museum exhibitions across the United States. His art is in many private and public collections, including the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA; Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, WY; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK.

His book The House of Owls received the National Outdoor Book Award when Yale University Press published it in 2015.

Allison Reagan named Lake Forest Park Rotarian of the Year

Friday, July 5, 2024

Alan Merry and Allison Reagan
Alan Merry, Past President, presented Allison Reagan as Lake Forest Park Rotarian of the year.

"Introducing Allison Reagan as our Rotarian of the year. Allison is the Treasure of our Lake Forest Park Rotary Foundation. She knows everything!"

Alan interviewed Allison to get answers to questions about why she thinks she was selected and what her Rotary story is. (Thank you Alan!)

Her very modest answer as to why she was selected:

"My first awkwardly ungracious inclination is to say, “I don’t know why. We all do so much !” I don’t know the selection criteria for this award, which is done in secret by the Club Board."

"Personally," she said, "I thought Claire Conway should have gotten it for leading the auction and throwing club parties, but she wasn’t eligible because was also busy being president !"

Allison Reagan, LFP Rotarian of the Year
And here is her Rotary story:

“My involvement in Rotary began with a grandfather who belonged to club #1 in Chicago, and after we moved to Arizona, he would take me to the Christmas party.

"In those days, that was one of the rare times women were allowed at Rotary events. (Good thing times have changed !)

"I was a stay at home mom for our two daughters - coop preschool, PTA, etc - until they graduated, then went to work with my husband in our aluminum boat building business. During that time I also took business math, accounting and law classes.

"After he passed away, I was looking for an opportunity make a difference, and in 2012 Tom French finally got me to join LFP Rotary, where I have made some wonderful friends.

"I have been Club Secretary, Foundation Secretary and became Foundation Treasurer in 2021. Finance is what I do best, and it’s a job I like.

"I also work with the Auction procurement chair in entering guests and donations into the software, and am head cashier on auction night. Our auction is the main fundraiser for the year, and determines our charitable budget.“

Obviously, she is, as Alan says, "a Treasure."

Shoreline Rotary meets Wednesday January 24, 2024 from 5:30-7pm at the Virtue Cellar Tasting Room 558 Main St Suite 104, Edmonds, WA 98020.

Come to check out the brand new Tasting Room for Virtue cellars.

Virtue Cellars is a small family winery located in the Richmond Beach neighborhood of Shoreline, producing small lot, terroir-focused wines from the most unique vineyards in Washington State.

Quality is at the heart of everything they do at Virtue. Producing less than 2000 cases per year, their wines are hand-made by the owners of the company (Kevin Mueller and Jake Edens) with purposeful production techniques and meticulous attention to detail.

Their winemaking philosophy focuses on production of small lot, single-vineyard / single-varietal wines that showcase unique aromas and flavors of specific sites, which are often lost in larger production wines.

No artificial flavors, colors or additives are ever used in the production of our wines.
Our goal is to ensure that every bottle of Virtue delivers a unique and enjoyable tasting experience, along with an origin story all its own.
If you need help with parking, please email Micah at micahblair@msn.com and he will meet you at the curb and park your car for you.
