A Witch's Gift

‘A Witch’s Gift’ Opens at Graphite Arts Center
Artist Reception Thursday, September 21, 5 - 8pm
Open Saturdays, September 23 - October 28, 12 - 4pm

After two months of in-house work constructing the flora and fauna, and creating the critters and creatures for the fantastical, full-scale exhibit A Witch’s Gift, the immersive experience at The Gallery at Graphite opens to the public.

A Witch’s Gift is the work of artist Perry Jakobs who has worked in residency at Graphite since July 2023. Jakobs is an imaginative, hardworking, cheerful artist with a unique vision for storytelling. Through this installation exhibit Jakobs has succeeded in fashioning their imaginative fantasy world into life size elements both real and created.

A Witch’s Gift is a full-gallery installation complete with a fully decorated, life-size antique bedroom; an ancient apothecary; a pastel colored, mushroom-filled forest, and much more.

Jakobs has described the project as a theatrical, narrative experience – “a whimsical, bubbly dreamscape! ...with an undertone of melancholy.”

Apothecary shop

The concept for A Witch’s Gift is an original story written by Jakobs, in collaboration with their brother Noel Hansen. In the tale, a young girl finds herself in a world where she does not quite fit in. Through hard work, and a personal exploration of how to truly apply her unique talents, the youthful protagonist learns she can make this world a better place for all.

The handmade book with the complete written tale is part of the exhibit.

The Graphite Arts Center is proud to be able to feature Jakobs and their work. Visitors are invited to meet the artist most Saturdays and join them for a walk through of the exhibit.

Leena's Cafe closes - building to be demolished this month

Leena's has closed
By Diane Hettrick

The popular Leena's Cafe in the North City Business District closed its doors the last weekend in May.

The developer who bought the property plans to raze the building this month to begin construction of an apartment building.

Nick Athan, owner of the family-owned cafe since 1993, was not available for comment. However, he has told us in the past that he plans to rebuild Leena's in the new building.

Construction at the site, 17732 15th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155 will take approximately two years.

Athan purchased the property when it came up for sale several years ago.

Leena's then suffered through the pandemic problems that every restaurant faced, with fluctuating regulations, limits on how many people could be in the space, and customers fearful of Covid.

His many loyal customers are expressing their concerns about the loss of their favorite restaurant and hoping that Leena's will indeed be back.

North City’s Café Dolce aims to be a community center

Café Dolce in the North City Business District

Story and photos by Mike Remarcke

The Café Dolce is a recent addition to new businesses in the North City business district.

The café was opened by business partners Solomon Tsegaselassie and Selam Melaku, both residents of Shoreline. After scouting out locations on Aurora Ave., they chose North City because of the new housing construction, anticipated influx of new residents, and lack of a sit-down coffee café in the area.

A sit-down coffee café in North City

The goal of this café goes beyond pouring lattes. Both partners hope to create a local arts and cultural hub, a vibrant community gathering place that will enhance the evolving North City neighborhood.

Currently, North City artist James Schindler is displaying his artwork. The café is always looking for new local artists to promote. As part of their focus on the arts, the café has formed a “Sip Coffee and Paint” program where kids and parents gather to learn how to paint from local artists.

The café plans to promote local artists
The current display is by James Schindler

As part of the community focus, there is a meeting room where patrons can gather. A book club meets regularly, as well as some tech folks. The Shoreline Chamber of Commerce and North City Neighborhood Association have also had meetings at the café.

Ethiopian blend coffee, pastries, and fresh sandwiches

But most importantly, they serve coffee (try their wonderful Ethiopian blends), pastries sourced from Macarina and Alki bakeries, and fresh sandwiches. You can top it off with a scoop of Gelato ice cream or other tasty treats.

Café Dolce is located at 17547 15th Ave NE in Shoreline and is open daily, from 7:30am to 3pm.

Under new ownership, the North City Bistro and Wine Shop continues the tradition of fine music and fine wine - and expands fine dining

Wednesday, April 5, 2023

Story and photos by Mike Remarcke

North City Bistro and Wine Shop, a long-standing, renowned jazz nightclub in the North City neighborhood of Shoreline, is under new management.

The previous owners, after withstanding the pandemic by selling cases of wine at the location, opted to retire and move to the south of France.

The Bistro has an extensive inventory of fine wine.

The new owners, Taylor and Leah Park, are Shoreline residents (Leah, a Shorewood grad) with three children. They look at this operation as a family business.

The other day while I was visiting the club, two kids, Dylan and Giuliana, were folding napkins, while Liam sat in his stroller, wishing he could help.

Taylor has been a chef at various establishments in the Seattle area, most recently as Executive Chef at both T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field, but his passion is gourmet foods, and he is very excited to share his newest creations at the Bistro.

The couple is in the process of enhancing the menu with new, exceptionally fine options of appetizers, small plates, salads, and entrees. Taylor and Lia have also added wine tasting events to the Bistro’s calendar, bringing in some of the area’s best wines for sampling with food options that pair well with the featured wines.

One of the most popular jazz combos in the area, Pearl Django is booked regularly at the Bistro.

Most importantly, the couple plans to continue the tradition of great music.

Many outstanding regional jazz musicians are excited that the Bistro will continue to support their musical community. The owners said that they are booked well into the future, but are always looking for new jazz musicians to play at their venue.

Recently, this reporter and his wife joined friends for a lively sold-out performance by Pearl Django. We’d met this couple at a shared table while celebrating our wedding anniversary at a Pearl Django concert pre-pandemic. How nice that friends are made sharing a table and enjoying music together at the North City Bistro!

Music and dining are offered Wednesday- Saturday.
  • Happy Hour is Thursday - Saturday from 4-6pm and on Wednesday, all day.
  • The wine shop is open 12 - 8pm Wednesday .- Saturday.
  • Prepared meals are offered for delivery and are also available Wednesday - Saturday.

Shoreline is fortunate that the North City Bistro lives on, providing exceptional music, gourmet food and fine wine!

The Bistro is located at 1520 NE 177th St, Shoreline WA 98155 in the North City Business District.

Update: The photo previously identified as Leah Park is actually a wine vendor. Also, we are verifying the link for delivered meals.

Update on Suni's

Monday, April 3, 2023

The Kyrkos family, owners of arson-destroyed Suni's restaurant in the North City Business district, are working their way through insurance claims and city permits, "trying to figure out what the next steps are."

We do plan on rebuilding. We are just trying to figure out everything that goes with it. There’s a lot of steps that have to be taken before we have set plans.

They are still in shock and grief at the loss, but very thankful for the community support.

Shoreline is a special place with amazing people and we hope to see everyone again as soon as we can.

On the Menu at Le Petit Paquet: Change!

Thursday, March 30, 2023

Le Petit Paquet photo by Wayne Pridemore
By Jamie Holter

It’s been just over a year since Le Petit Paquet opened in the old Streetzeria Pizza location in Richmond Beach on Richmond Beach Road at 20th Ave NW.

On the menu for year two? Change! And it’s all good.

Zephyr Paquette is the owner, a little dynamo package herself, just as her restaurant’s name implies.

In the last year, she’s stayed true to the excellent pizza we have come to expect and added a bit more: fresh ingredients from local farmers.

She dries her own herbs and continues to focus relentlessly on quality and tasty food.

Date night. Photo by Jamie Holter
But here’s what’s new.
Wednesday is Date Night!

$50 and tip includes a pizza + salad + a bottle of wine. What??? That’s amazing.

It’s not just any bottle of wine. Zephyr prides herself on carefully chosen wine, chosen with her best customers’ tastes in mind.

You can buy a bottle to take home with you from the retail wall, too.

On Fridays, she releases the “Fresh Sheet.”
The Friday night dinner menu goes beyond pizza to include Duck Confit or Halibut or Scallops, whatever is fresh at the moment.

Her summer burrata has roasted peaches, pickled cherries and white balsamic reduction. Yum. Oh, and lemon bars. Yes, the lemon bars.

She’s wrapping up work on the outside patio. Dogs are not only welcome, but enthusiastically so. (Her pup, Ziggy, herded me around the restaurant for a while then sat down, allowing me to scratch his shoulder for 10 minutes. Sorry, I was distracted by this adorable dog.)

Zephyr sees movie nights and outdoor dining
But wait, there’s more!

Zephyr is going to use the huge open space behind the restaurant to expand the eating area and show big screen movies over the summer.

Buy dinner (or her new “lunch box” concept), bring a blanket, and watch a movie.

That’s her plan and she hopes it is yours as well.

New tables for the back yard
The day I visited, she was sanding and priming two gorgeous pieces of wood that will soon become tables. She plans a bar out back too.

But it’s the staff who she is proudest of right now.

Every kitchen employee is 19 and under so she considers the workplace a teaching kitchen.

She knows the backstory of each student which was impressive.

So if you haven’t been to Le Petit Paquet in a while, consider a visit before summer.

Bring a date on Wednesday or your best dog anytime and definitely make a plan for a family or friends movie night with the big blow up screen between May and October.

Local restaurant robbed at gunpoint twice

Sunday, February 5, 2023

Nara Chinese Restaurant

By Diane Hettrick

Nara Chinese Restaurant, 15033 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133, has been hit by violent robbers twice in the past few months.

The Kim family, Insuk and Young Jin Kim, have owned and operated the popular restaurant for 16 years. After the most recent robbery they took only a day to recover and reorganize the ransacked restaurant. They were back in business the next day.

They had a surveillance system but after two robberies, they are upgrading to equipment that takes high resolution pictures and putting new locks on their restaurant.

Their daughter, Nara Kim, asked for community support for her family, and set up a GoFundMe page which raised enough money to cover their expenses. The page is no longer accepting donations.

She wrote a heartfelt account of her distress at being far away at school, and unable to help her parents. (see her reports here

Besides the Nara Chinese Restaurant at 150th and Aurora, Shari's at 15252 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133 was also recently robbed. Police are confident that the robberies are not related and are continuing to work all three  cases.

Although the fundraiser is closed, Nara says you can still help her parents. "If you are feeling like going out in the near future for food, I ask that you consider ordering from our restaurant to support my parents."

The restaurant, open from 5pm to 2am, accommodates dine-in, take-out, and delivery through multiple services - GrubHub, Seamless, UberEats, Postmates. Food is served until 1am and the bar is open until 2am.

They serve a full Chinese menu but also have dishes from Korea, and Japan.

They apparently do not have their own website, but the menu and prices are listed on the delivery services' webpages (GrubHub, for example)

Message to community from owners of Suni's Pizza

Tuesday, January 3, 2023

Suni's Pizza photo by Steven H. Robinson

From the Kyrkos family

Our family is truly devastated from the fire at our beloved Suni’s Pizza that occurred Monday morning. (See previous article). We are grateful for the response and support of the Shoreline Fire Dept. and all personnel who responded. We are grateful that there were no fatalities or injuries, except for the minor injury suffered by one of the responding firefighters.

We are grateful for the amazing support and love we have received from this devastating fire from the Shoreline community and beyond.

Suni’s began in 1979, the dream of a Greek immigrant whose family continued to run the business until the tragic events of Monday. In the past 43 years, we have strived to become a place in the Shoreline community where people could gather and enjoy great food, reasonably priced, with friendly service.

We have watched many of customers have kids, get married, and then their kids have kids. We have watched our employees turn from dishwashers, to college graduates.

We are so devastated for our hard working employees, that we also consider family, as well as our loyal Shoreline community.

Lastly, we realize there are many questions regarding the origin of the fire and what will happen to Suni’s next. We are cooperating with the Shoreline Fire Department which is investigating.

We will address the future of Suni’s at the proper time.

--Nichole Kyrkos on behalf of Chris and the entire Kyrkos family.

Suni's Restaurant in North City destroyed by arson fire

Monday, January 2, 2023

The walls and roof are standing but the interior looks destroyed
Shoreline Fire was dispatched just after 5am Monday morning, January 2, 2023 to reports of visible flames at Suni's Pizza in the 17700 blocks of 15th Ave NE in the North City Business District.

The interior is charred
Upon arrival the initial crew encountered heavy fire spread in the attic of the building. They aggressively attacked the fire, but due to the fire growth prior to their arrival they had to operate defensively. The ladder truck was used to allow the Firefighters to flow water directly on the fire from above and in a safer manner.

Unfortunately, one of our Firefighters sustained a knee injury requiring an evaluation at the hospital.

Fire vehicles filled the street
Shoreline Fire vehicles filled the street. At least three trucks had hoses on the fire, while aid cars stood by.

After they could examine the scene, Fire investigators quickly determined that the fire was arson and put up notices around the site. A reward of $10,000 is being offered for information.

If anyone knows or saw something they can call: 1-800-55-ARSON.

Suni's is a local icon, owned and operated by the same family for 45 years. Known for its good food and friendly staff, many customers know the owner, Chris, personally, both as a business owner and a neighbor.

After 45 years, residents feel a personal connection to Suni's

Suni's is normally open 7 days a week, but at the end of November, they announced they would close on Mondays (only) during December because of staffing issues.

Shoreline Caring has set up a GoFundMe page to help owner Chris and his staff as they grapple with the devastation.

The GoFundMe link is here.

Sharon and Ray Bloom have signed papers to sell the North City Bistro and Wine Shop to Taylor and Leah Park.

The Parks are currently in the labor-intensive process of obtaining a license from the State Liquor Control Board.

Ray says, "Taylor is a Very well known Chef with a Ton of experience, and Leah is a Pastry chef, so we are quite certain they will elevate our already delicious food."

Ray and Sharon Bloom
Ray and Sharon will continue to work with them for some weeks,

"until they are up to speed on our processes, including hosting live music, which they have committed to doing.
"That may change eventually, but if you all continue to support them and the live music, that will truly help insure that music will still flow from NCB!"

"Sharon and I can't express how peaceful and pleasant the whole negotiation process has been, and we feel our beloved Bistro is going to the Perfect people!!
"We hope you continue to support them as you have us over the past (nearly) 9 years!"
