Restaurant Review: Pizza at The Local 104

Sunday, September 18, 2022

Sue Stadler at The Local 104
Sue Stadler, LFP Elementary/Kellogg/Shorecrest graduate, enjoys a mushroom pizza at The Local 104 where she was having supper with her mother, Anne Stadler.

Anne talked with Chef Tony Vujovich, co-owner of The Local 104

Chef Tony is truly the KING of local food!! Awesome supper at Local 104!!

He uses a method for creating the dough that he invented. It makes an incredibly delicious thin crust.

He’s really super thoughtful about sourcing locally, paying careful attention to climate change issues and practices. The place is a pleasure to eat in! And he’s an impressive guy!

The Local 104 is on Ballinger Way and 35th Ave NE, 18498 Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

The Seattle Times: New restaurants in north Seattle

Sunday, May 8, 2022

The Seattle Times just published an article about 37 new restaurants opening in the Seattle area. Two of them are in north Seattle. (see article here)

KING TUT
AUTHENTIC MEDITERRANEAN HALAL KITCHEN
206-402-6357

After a two-year hiatus, King Tut Mediterranean Restaurant, which had a following in Lynnwood, has reopened on Aurora Ave North near the Shoreline border, doing Egyptian and Middle Eastern comfort fare from grilled chicken and kofta skewers to arguably its best dish, braised lamb with smoked rice.

In North Seattle, one of the most promising Vietnamese restaurants to debut in recent years, Lotus Pond specializes in northern cuisine with bun rieu cua or crab noodle soup and bun cha ha noi or vermicelli noodle with chargrilled pork.
Lotus Pond is a good primer for those who want to explore Vietnamese cuisine beyond the standbys of pho and banh mis. The appetizer list is absurdly cheap (most items under $9), including standouts bo la lot or charbroiled beef wrapped in betel leaf and fried pork-and-shrimp imperial rolls.

Community rallies to help Ballinger business owner

Friday, April 15, 2022

Sarah Kim, owner Teriyaki Plus on Ballinger Way
By Lesley Williams

Many of you know Sarah at Teriyaki Plus on Ballinger Way.

She’s been struggling to keep her restaurant open, take care of her health, and support her mother in Korea ever since her husband died unexpectedly a few years ago.

She is one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet (and makes incredible teriyaki) but she’s had a couple big business equipment expenses that have to be handled immediately to keep her license.

We are trying to raise enough money to get her exhaust vents and hood cleaned (has to be by a professional to pass inspection) and she needs a new refrigerator.

We are hoping the local community can come together to help her.
--------------

The community did respond. A GoFundMe page set up for Sarah exceeded its goal in three days. The fund is still open at this link.

Teriyaki Plus is at 19939 Ballinger Way NE, Shoreline WA 98155. Phone: 206-361-9811

Sodam Chicken restaurant opening soon in North City

Sodam Chicken was first established in South Korea on August of 2010 and has since become one of the most famous restaurants in Korea. “Sodam” is a Korean word that means “plentiful and tasty food.” Living up to its meaning, Sodam Chicken’s goal is to always serve hearty, tasty and bountiful food.

Our trained and dedicated staff will welcome our guests with a friendly smile and will always try to put their best foot forward and listen to our guests’ needs and feedbacks.

Sodam Chicken is a locally-owned, family-catered restaurant. They will offer fresh and affordable deep fried and oven roasted / baked chicken products, as well as shrimp, short ribs and pork entrées.

They use a wide variety of signature sauces and a variety of side dishes such as salads, fried rice, fried and yakisoba noodles. In-store and takeout orders are both welcome.

Sodam Chicken is situated at 17549 15th Ave in the North City Plaza Building NE, Shoreline WA 98155.

We have renovated our restaurant to create a warm, cozy and inviting venue for our guest to enjoy while devouring the unique signature dishes of Sodam Chicken. Final preparations are underway and will be completed soon.

The principals of Sodam US, LLC are Sang Kyun Chong, Sun Jin Park, and Ji Moon Jang. They chose the Shoreline area as their first store because Shoreline is their hometown.

Just a week after The Seattle Times ran an article (here) on The Local 104, King 5 did a segment on owner / pizza-maker Tony Vujovich's method of making pizza dough.

And no one seems to get far enough down the menu to get to the best mac 'n cheese in the known universe.

Seattle Times article features two Lake Forest Park eateries

Tuesday, March 15, 2022

The Local 104 photo by Steven H. Robinson

A recent article in The Seattle Times by Times food writer Jackie Varriano features The Local 104 on Ballinger Way in Lake Forest Park, as well as Briley's BBQ and Grill on Bothell Way.

The menu is centered on neo-Neapolitan-style pizza, which differs from Neapolitan in a few ways. First, a neo-Neapolitan usually adds oil and sugar in the dough in addition to flour, water, yeast and salt. Vujovich uses Field 41 Bale Breaker beer as the water and sugar components. It’s also baked at a lower temperature, which creates a slightly different crust structure.

PSE partners with Taco Time to help restaurants go carbon neutral

Wednesday, March 9, 2022

Taco Time photo by Steven H. Robinson

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and Taco Time Northwest are working together to make all 79 Taco Time restaurants carbon neutral. Taco Time has signed on to match 100% of its energy used with renewable power through PSE’s Green Power and Carbon Balance programs.

By matching its electric and natural gas usage with clean energy options, Taco Time restaurants will reduce their carbon footprint by more than 15.5 million pounds of CO2 every year – the equivalent to not driving nearly 18 million miles each year.

“It’s wonderful to see a Pacific Northwest institution showing its commitment to our region by participating in PSE programs that invest in local renewable energy projects,” said Mary Kipp, PSE’s President and CEO. “This type of partnership is another way we’re working together to create a clean energy future for all.”

PSE makes it easy for businesses to meet corporate sustainability and clean energy goals through its renewable energy programs which includes; Green Power, Carbon Balance and Renewable Natural Gas. Each one offers a way for businesses to reduce its carbon footprint while making use of the Pacific Northwest’s abundant clean power resources.

“As a local, family-owned company, headquartered in Washington state for nearly 60 years, we believe it is important to sustainably use our region’s natural resources so they’re available for generations to come,” said Chris Tonkin, Taco Time co-president.
“Almost a decade ago, we launched an industry leading and nationally recognized composting program. We’re thrilled to take the next significant step in our commitment to preserving the environment by making our business 100% powered by renewable energy and offsetting any natural gas usage with carbon offsets in northwest forests.”

PSE is committed to working together to create a clean energy future for all while setting an aspirational goal to be a Beyond Net Zero Carbon company by 2045. PSE will target reducing its own carbon emissions to net zero and go beyond by helping other sectors to enable carbon reduction across the state of Washington. Partnering with successful Northwest businesses like Taco Time, helps PSE engage more people in that mission.

Check out how Taco Time is going carbon neutral here.

Founded in 1962, Taco Time Northwest is a family-owned business operating 79 restaurants throughout the Pacific Northwest. Operated by the fourth generation of the founding family, these restaurants run independently of the nationwide Taco Time franchise. Taco Time Northwest offers the ultimate quick service experience featuring fresh, healthy salads, tacos and burritos, sourcing local ingredients whenever possible.

Dragonfish owners, Takao and Yuko Kikuchi, open Baguus Little Asia in Mountlake Terrace

Monday, March 7, 2022

Baguus Little Asia www.baguus.com
Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043
(425) 504-7111

Open Tuesday-Sunday 4pm to 8:30pm
Locally owned by Takao and Yuko Kikuchi
Chef: Brandon Morales
General Manager: Czarina Novenario

Seattle, WA  With decades of experience in Pan Asian cuisine, Dragonfish Asian Café former owners have opened Baguus Little Asia in Mountlake Terrace.

A fast, full-service casual concept. Baguus Little Asia has been open since November 26, 2021. Baguus, pronounced “bah ɡo͞os” offers dishes from Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand.

In Malaysia and Indonesia, Baguus means great, beautiful and having a wonderful time. So “Baguus is the place to enjoy happiness and joy through food,” says owner Takao Kikuchi.

“Our goal is that every guest who visits us at Baguus will leave happy!”

“The Baguus menu highlights some of our favorite dishes, along with a couple of popular recipes that we brought along from Dragonfish; Dragonfire Noodles and Dragonfire Shrimp,” said co-owner, Yuko Kikuchi.

“Our Asian-inspired bold flavor menu also features noodles, potstickers, vegetables, seafood, poultry and rice. We’ve added our own American twist to traditional Asian dishes that we discovered through our many trips to Asian countries, creating a unique culinary culture,” added Takao.
“We want the experience to be “easy, quick, affordable and delicious.”
Self-serve wine and beer wall

The restaurant features a state of the art, self-serve wine and beer wall with 20+ local, seasonal and international brands. This unique feature is perfect for enjoying a small tasting or a full glass.

Yuko and Takao
The 2000 square foot space, seats 60 and features an artistic, modern decor along with a real moss wall on the restaurant’s back wall, designed and produced by Michelle Ritter at Seattle Plant Company.

“We have also hired local artist and interior designer, Robert Williamson to bring a fusion of Japan and the Pacific Northwest to our ambiance,” said Takao.
“Robert was educated in the Far East so he has an eye and appreciation for the history and culture that we wanted to incorporate into the design.”

“Our goal is for the guest to enjoy a true cultural dining experience and the green wall adds a serenity to the dining experience,” added Takao.
“That includes not only our unique, pan Asian flavors but the restaurant décor and vibe.”

Another element different from traditional restaurants is the cell phone, self-ordering and payment via a QR code business model. This idea comes from Japan and is used in many Asian countries.

"We also have a well-trained, full-service staff with the capability of providing traditional services but we feel our quality of service is better and guests are more comfortable utilizing this system."

Shoreline restaurants can compost food waste for free with new program

Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Let your favorite restaurants know about this program

To help protect the environment and support local businesses, the City of Shoreline is offering free compost service for restaurants in Shoreline. Through this limited-time promotion, eligible food service businesses in Shoreline may receive a year of free compost service with Recology. Participating businesses will also receive supplies and training valued at $450 to help them get started composting their food waste.

Currently, almost 30% of what gets sent to the King County landfill could have been composted. Composting food scraps instead of throwing them in the garbage keeps valuable resources out of the landfill and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Composting food scraps also creates healthy soil that can be used on farms, gardens, and orchards to grow more food. The City received a grant from King County Solid Waste Division to offer this program.

Food service businesses in Shoreline, such as restaurants, caterers, commissary kitchens, bars, and other businesses serving or preparing food that do not currently subscribe to compost service are eligible for this incentive. This limited-term promotion is available on a first-come first served basis for businesses that apply before December 31, 2021. Businesses can learn more and apply online at www.shorelinewa.gov/compost or contact Cameron Reed with questions: 206-801-2455.

Norovirus outbreak associated with Habit Burger Grill in Aurora Village

Thursday, June 3, 2021

Habit Burger Grill in Aurora Village

From Seattle and King County Public Health

Public Health is investigating an outbreak of norovirus-like illness with vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, and chills associated with Habit Burger Grill in Shoreline' Aurora Village.

We have not identified how norovirus was spread within the restaurant. This is not uncommon for norovirus outbreaks because the virus can spread through multiple contaminated food items, environmental surfaces, and from person to person.

Illnesses
Since May 24, 2021, 23 people from 6 unrelated meal parties reported becoming ill after consuming food from Habit Burger Grill from May 21-May 24, 2021. No ill employees have yet been identified.

Public Health actions
Environmental Health investigators visited the restaurant on May 26, 2021. Investigators did not find any risk factors that are known to contribute to the spread of norovirus. The restaurant was required to conduct a thorough cleaning and disinfection. Investigators revisited the restaurant on May 28 and conducted onsite food safety and employee illness training with staff and reinforced cleaning, disinfection, handwashing, and no bare hand contact with ready to eat foods. Investigators will revisit the restaurant within two weeks to ensure ongoing compliance with proper food handling practices.

Laboratory testing
We do not have laboratory testing for the people who got sick. Often in norovirus outbreaks, no laboratory testing is done because people tend to get better within a day or two. Symptoms among those who got sick are suggestive of norovirus.
