Rob Oxford: Dinner is Served

Thursday, January 28, 2021

Dinner Is Served
Go to: www.neighborhoodgrills.com for menu and pricing

Ask people what it is they look forward to most once this whole thing is over and I’m going to bet many will say taking the family out to eat. Picking out a restaurant or like me relying on the same old favorite, getting dressed up (or not), sliding into a booth and setting aside a couple hours to be “waited on,” “pampered” and “served.” A chance to finally reconnect over a good meal and maybe a glass of Washington wine.

Of course, for a large family, dinner out can be rather expensive… but always, ALWAYS worth it. Besides, who says you ALWAYS have to take the kids?

It wasn’t something we did a lot when I was growing up. We tended to “live within our means” (a favorite saying of my Mother’s) and both my parents were excellent cooks. So, this left very little excuse for paying someone else to feed us.

Dad was in charge of the Mess Hall at Madigan Army Hospital (JBLM) where quantity, efficiency and variety (in that order) were paramount in keeping the stomachs of our men and women in uniform full and satisfied. Where Dad’s specialty was quantity and efficiency, Mom’s was quality. Her Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding will never be beaten.

Restaurants, especially casual dining and family style establishments, have been hit hard by the pandemic. Many of our favorites are closed, some never to reopen and others are barely keeping afloat. The number of workers affected, who rely solely on the food industry to support their families, is astonishing.

Thankfully with their patronage, our local community has done a stellar job in keeping some of the smaller, take-out only eateries in business.

In 2005, a space that had been sitting empty in Town Center for five years prior became The Lake Forest Bar and Grill.

The third franchise for the rapidly growing Neighborhood Grills restaurant brand, LFBandG helped revitalize what was a struggling Lake Forest Park Town Center and has been for many years now, one of its primary anchors.

John Schmidt, CEO of Neighborhood Grills, has been supporting the Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and Mountlake Terrace communities since the doors of his restaurant first opened.

The list of clubs and organizations who’ve benefited directly from his company’s generosity is quite lengthy but worth acknowledging. North King County and Shoreline Little Leagues, Richmond Junior Football, Shorelake Soccer, Highlander Football Gridiron Group, Briarcrest Elementary, Shorecrest Boosters and PTA and presently the Shorecrest Senior Spree 2021.

All are but just a few who have experienced success reaching their financial goals with help from John and his team at Lake Forest Bar and Grill.

Having never been a business owner myself, I was curious as to why John was so generous? Why is supporting the local community so important to him, when other restaurants (and there are many) don’t see the benefit? Why doesn’t HE say no? How could giving away free food possibly help a struggling business? With my last question I was sure I’d had him cornered.

I didn’t.

John explained that he, “…appreciates the opportunity to be community first and generous,” but that his first priority is running his business. A business that when in full operation employs and supports upwards of 300 people, but a business that understands the importance of being a community partner.

John went on to explain that “every dollar spent promoting or sponsoring a nonprofit is paid for by extra business.” Business he may not otherwise have received were it not for hosting a successful charitable event, followed by a positive social media post or a personal recommendation to a friend.

With an emphasis on quality service, John and his business partners believe strongly in serving great food and in the community. Luckily for us philanthropy and profitably does indeed coexist.

A family-owned business, it is important to mention that LFBandG is responsible for introducing many of our young citizens into the workforce, mine included. A “first job” for some, the restaurant allows them to grow and experience different positions within the food industry, all the while instilling confidence and encouraging responsibility.

After 2 ½ months closure because of the pandemic, the Lake Forest Bar and Grill is once again open and we couldn’t be happier.

To celebrate, on the evening of January 29, 2021 from 4 – 7pm, all food proceeds will benefit “Shorecrest Senior Spree 2021,” the annual end-of-year celebration for our graduating Seniors.
Orders can be placed for pick up (only) right now. Go to: www.neighborhoodgrills.com for menu and pricing.

There is finally reason for real optimism. Soon we will once again be joining our friends for happy hour at one of our favorite watering holes. You’ll find me at Lake Forest Bar and Grill, where unashamedly, everybody knows my name.

Sen. Frockt bill designed to help restaurants and small businesses

Wednesday, January 27, 2021

Restaurants and retail businesses whose insurers are denying claims for losses suffered due to shutdowns to combat the COVID-19 pandemic would receive help if a bill introduced today becomes law.

SB 5351, sponsored by Sen. David Frockt (D-Seattle) and Sen. T’wina Nobles (D-Fircrest), and cosponsored by Sen. Jesse Salomon (D-Shoreline) would help ensure that businesses unable to operate due to the pandemic response have the chance to collect business interruption insurance payments that are rightfully owed to them after having paid their premiums for this coverage for years.

“Many small businesses, especially restaurants, planned ahead and purchased insurance to protect their businesses against unforeseen disasters,” said Frockt.
“Courts in our state have ruled recently that insurance companies should not be allowed to deny legitimate claims based on a strained reading of the policy language. This bill codifies that protection and will give small business owners a chance to recover some of their losses.”

To address the circulation of inaccurate information about the scope of business interruption insurance and the impact of filing claims, as well as the continuing effects of the pandemic, the bill also gives policyholders an additional year to challenge the denial of business interruption insurance claims.

“Small businesses play such an important role in the fabric of our society,” said Nobles. “When they hurt, the hearts of our communities hurt. This bill is about ensuring they have a fair process to claim any insurance relief that is their due.”

All new Blackbird Café and Bar takes flight in Richmond Beach

Thursday, December 17, 2020

All new Blackbird Café and Bar now open in Richmond Beach

Temporary Hours:
  • Mon-Fri Dinner only 4-8pm,
  • Sat-Sun 9-12 Pastry, Coffee and Breakfast / 11-4 Lunch / 4-8 Dinner
(Hint: Next to the fire education station and behind another building on Richmond Beach Road)

Hungry yet?

Chef Chris Hill introduces Blackbird Café and Bar to his childhood neighborhood of Richmond Beach. In the former Hill’s space, Blackbird features morning espresso, in house pastry, quality lunches and dinners with a seasonal, affordable approach.

“Our handmade cinnamon rolls, burgers, creamy chowder, fish and chips, fresh salads, killer espresso and breakfast pastries are truly exceptional and won’t break the bank.” Jordan Schey, General Manager

The new space is bright and open with white/teal accents, tile, exposed beams and a sleek modern ambiance. Guests will enjoy professional counter service, a full bar and cozy outdoor seating.

Chris Hill has owned Hill's for 15 years

Chef Hill has had big success with Matts’ Rotisserie and Oyster Lounge in Redmond, as well as, Hill’s which he has run for 15 years. His decision to rebrand Hill’s into Blackbird was not an easy one but luckily, many of Hill’s NW classics will remain in the Blackbird line up.

“I’ve been called crazy for doing this but I really felt that transitioning to a counter service concept, expanding hours to the morning for coffee and pastries, while at the same time continuing our lunch, dinner and bar service will put us in a good position to weather the storm that has hit the restaurant industry.
"My hope is that by saying goodbye to Hill’s and hello to Blackbird, our community can keep a much needed gathering place for years to come” Chris Hill, Owner.

Blackbird is a fun, casual Richmond Beach meet up spot from sunrise to sundown. Enjoy great quality food and drink, friendly counter service and that comfortable neighborhood feel.

AG Ferguson issues guidance for third-party restaurant delivery services

Monday, December 7, 2020

Third-party delivery services that hide fees, list restaurants without their permission are likely violating the Consumer Protection Act

OLYMPIA — In response to concerns raised by consumer complaints and news reports, Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued guidance today for third-party restaurant delivery services. The guidance is aimed at helping the companies avoid violations of Washington’s Consumer Protection Act.

The Attorney General’s Office has received approximately 45 complaints about third-party restaurant delivery services in 2020. The complaints cover a variety of issues.

Complaints and news reports highlight serious concerns for both restaurants and individual consumers. When a third-party service implies it is authorized to deliver for a restaurant, it could damage the restaurant’s reputation if the service performs poorly or charges unfair fees.

Consumers complained to the Attorney General’s Office that their bills were higher than expected due to membership or delivery fees. Consumers also complained that the menus posted on the websites of third-party restaurant delivery services did not match the actual restaurant menus.

“As the pandemic continues, many Washingtonians are increasingly using third-party delivery services to access their favorite restaurants,” Ferguson said.
“These companies need to be clear and honest with consumers about their fees, and their relationships with restaurants.”

The guidance, available here, highlights conduct that likely violates the Washington Consumer Protection Act, including:
  • Charging consumers any fee without clearly and conspicuously disclosing the fee before the consumer places an order.
  • Listing a restaurant or business without their permission.
  • Establishing or listing false phone numbers, websites, or other contact information for a restaurant or business.
  • Misrepresenting to consumers the source of the food or products delivered.
  • Misrepresenting safety precautions.
In November, Gov. Jay Inslee issued a new emergency proclamation capping delivery fees for third-party delivery platforms at 15 percent of the price of the order, and total fees at 18 percent. The proclamation went into effect Nov. 25. Violating that proclamation would also violate the Consumer Protection Act.

Starting November 1, brunch food trucks are in Ridgecrest every Sunday 9 am to 2 pm

Thursday, October 29, 2020

Sunny Up Seattle

Starting November 1, brunch food trucks are in Ridgecrest every Sunday 9am to 2pm.

Ridgecrest Public House turns five years old this November 1, 2020 and has been hosting food trucks nightly for all of those five years. Its new sister, the Drumlin, opened on October 1 this year.

We are starting Sunday brunch trucks on November 1st. We will alternate between these two trucks:

Sunny Up Seattle, serving various egg sandwiches named after famous women, as well as hash browns and donuts. The chef has run several notable restaurants, including Doe Bay Resort and Carmelita. (November 1, 15, 29 and beyond)

Panda Dim Sum, serving dim sum brunch. Dim sum is a breakfast tradition, and the owners have been cooking dim sum for years in San Francisco as well as Seattle.

They are serving buns, rice packets, and more, plus congee and even sourdough waffles for good measure, all out of a small converted yellow school bus. (November 8, 22 and beyond)

You can take your food to go or bring it into the Drumlin nearby, where we are serving coffee (drip, pourover, AeroPress, and French press for two) plus a variety of teas, juices, some beer and cider cocktails and our usual draft and wine menu.

We have socially distanced seating on our front and back patio and in our roomy and socially distanced interior. Reservations are not needed, but we'll happily take them. Email us at joinus@drumlin.pub or call or text us at 206-775-BEER.

The Drumlin is located at 522 NE 165th Street, near the Crest Theatre in Shoreline.

Polio

Poliomyelitis, or polio, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.

On October 24, 2020 Rotarians around the world will be celebrating their fight against ending polio in their clubs and communities. Last year 4,000 clubs in 136 countries organized more than 5,900 events to raise AWARENESS and FUNDS.

This is a challenging time in most parts of the world due to COVID-19 impact in our everyday life and our economy. We need your help to raise awareness and funds.

PolioPlus

For more than 30 years, Rotary and our partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Our PolioPlus program was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication by vaccinating children on a massive scale. As a core partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary focuses on advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and awareness-building.

Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.

Challenges

Rotary and our partners have made tremendous progress against polio, but eliminating all cases is going to take even more progress and perseverance. Afghanistan and Pakistan face unique challenges, including political insecurity, highly mobile populations, difficult terrain, and, in some instances, vaccine refusal and misinformation. With sufficient resources, the commitment of national governments, and innovations that improve access to remote areas, we are optimistic that we can eliminate polio.

Ensuring Success

Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year for polio eradication. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total commitment of $150 million each year. These funds provide much-needed operational support, medical workers, laboratory equipment, and educational materials. Governments, corporations, and private donors all play a crucial role in funding.

Rotary in Action

More than 1 million Rotary members have donated their time and money to eradicate polio, and every year, hundreds of members work with health workers to vaccinate children in countries affected by polio.

Rotary members work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute informational materials for people in areas that are isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. They also mobilize to recruit fellow volunteers, assist in transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.
