Christmas tree pickup at curbside for Shoreline residents

Monday, January 1, 2018

Unflocked, no decorations, 4 foot length trees
can be picked up at curbside for Shoreline
residents who subscribe to yard waste pickup.
Recology CleanScapes will collect unflocked, undecorated, natural trees in lengths up to 4 feet.

Shoreline customers who subscribe to food scraps and yard debris collection service may place trees out for collection on their regularly scheduled food/yard waste collection day.

Because of Monday's New Year's Day holiday, the collection schedule is pushed out one day this week, i.e. Monday on Tuesday, Tuesday on Wednesday, etc.

Residential customers who do not subscribe to food scraps and yard debris service may schedule collection of properly prepared trees during the first two full weeks in January at no additional charge.

To schedule, contact Customer Service at 206-763-4444 or at shoreline@recology.com by Friday, January 5th.

Flocked trees are not accepted in compost collection because flocking contains non-compostable materials including adhesives, flame retardant, or additives. Flocked trees may be disposed as garbage for an additional fee.

Sort it Out: New recycling rule starts January 2 at Shoreline Recycling & Transfer Station

Thursday, December 28, 2017

Shoreline Transfer and Recycling Station

To help cut waste and reduce the amount of recyclable and compostable materials brought to the landfill, the King County Solid Waste Division, beginning January 2, will ask self-haul transfer station and drop box customers to place selected materials in designated recycling bins or areas.

Starting January 2, 2018, self-haul customers at Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station will be asked to keep cardboard, scrap metal, yard waste and clean wood separate from their garbage and to place these items in marked recycling bins or areas at the facility.

The new rule applies to residents and businesses that haul their own garbage, recyclable and compostable materials to King County transfer stations or drop boxes. Self-haul customers use the public lanes at transfer stations.

“The items we’re targeting in the new recycling rule account for about one third of what self-haul customers bring to our facilities to be disposed as waste,” said Pat D. McLaughlin, SWD director.
“When recyclable materials are put back into the economy, they help create local jobs while conserving natural resources by reducing the need to create new products from virgin materials,” McLaughlin said. “Recycling conserves precious natural resources, including trees, energy and water.”

There will be no change in garbage disposal fees as a result of this recycling requirement, and there is no fee charged to recycle cardboard and scrap metal. While there is a fee to recycle yard waste and clean wood (unpainted, untreated lumber and pallets), that fee is 52 percent lower than the garbage disposal fee.

Other items, such as paper, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles, jugs and tubs, and textiles, can be recycled at no cost. Cans, bottles and other containers should be empty and clean (no liquids or food).

To learn more about what is accepted at Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station, visit the website or call King County Solid Waste Division at 206-477-4466.

Recycling: Clean, empty, dry

Sunday, November 19, 2017

Every year, Americans recycle more than 87 million tons.

Unfortunately, not everything placed in a recycle bin is ready to be recycled.

Did you know that a recent study showed two-thirds of Americans will put something in the recycling cart even if they are unsure if it is recyclable?

Sometimes, perfectly good items (such as paper) are ruined because other items are wet or soiled. Contaminated recycling hurts the environment.

What can you do? Remember: Empty, Clean, Dry.

Empty – make sure each container is completely empty

Clean – each container should be free from food and other residues

Dry – Dry containers ensure that other recyclables, such as cardboard and paper, remain uncontaminated

Shoreline City Council recognizes Meridian Park Elementary for America Recycles Day

Thursday, November 16, 2017

Meridian Park Elementary
On Tuesday, November 14, Shoreline City Council recognized the recycling efforts of Meridian Park Elementary School as part of its proclamation of America Recycles Day in Shoreline.

Meridian Park Elementary is one example of the success that students and staff can achieve by improving recycling and reducing waste at their school.

Between September 2016 and January 2017, the school increased its recycling rate 10% by collecting recyclable and compostable materials in the cafeteria.

All grade levels monitored recycling and waste stations during lunch periods, and second-grade students came in early to help kindergarteners with their lunches, in addition to their own.

Waste reduction and recycling reminders and successes were included in lunch announcements, and teachers posted student assignments on their teacher webpages instead of printing them on paper.

Throughout the month of November, the Council calls upon residents and businesses to celebrate this 20th anniversary of America Recycles Day, and the significant contribution that everyone in our community contributes to conserve resources and protect our environment by reducing waste; recycling and reusing materials; and purchasing items made from recycled materials.

Meridian Park is on the corner of Meridian and N 175th in Shoreline.

Skilled "fixers" will help you repair your damaged or broken household items

Friday, July 7, 2017

Mr. Fix-It is there for you

Shoreline Repair Time, Thursday, July 13, 2017, 3-6pm at the Shoreline Library large meeting room, 345 NE 175th St, 98155. Brought to you by the King County EcoConsumer program.

Do you have a broken lamp, pair of ripped jeans, or busted chair sitting around? Don't trash them - bring them to the free Repair Café! Skilled "fixers" will be there to help you repair your damaged or broken household items.

The goals of this event are to keep stuff out of the landfill, conserve resources and save you money!

We can only work on items small enough for one person to easily carry in. Please do not bring any items that are leaking, dangerous, use gasoline, or have a strong odor.

We can't make appointments for specific times, and you must be present during the repair. No guarantees an item can be fixed, or that attempting to fix it won't break it even more.

For items needing product-specific parts, we'll try to determine what's needed so you can purchase it at a store or online and finish the repair yourself at home.

Residents are encouraged to sign up in advance and describe what small household items you plan to bring for repair. If you plan to bring a household item or article of clothing for us to work on, let us know what you're bringing, so our fixers can be prepared. Walk-ins are welcome and everyone will be assisted as time is available.

Register in one of these ways:
  • Email or call Tom Watson 206-477-4481
  • Find this event on the EcoConsumer Facebook page, and write a post that you are coming and what you will be bringing.
  • Call the Shoreline Library at 206-362-7550.

Success Story - E-Cycle Washington electronics recycling program

Thursday, June 22, 2017

E-Cycle Washington, the state’s electronics recycling program, has been in operation for nine years, collecting more than 345 million pounds of electronic devices and keeping them out of the landfill.

In 2016, E-Cycle collected more than 36 million pounds of TVs, computers, monitors, e-readers, and portable DVD players for recycling.

Recycling saves energy and conserves resources, but it also protects the environment by capturing toxic materials.

Electronic devices contain lead, cadmium, polybrominated flame retardants, and other toxics. Ecology estimates that 24.7 million pounds of lead alone has been recycled through the E-Cycle program.

E-Cycle Washington is the state’s first manufacturer-funded product stewardship program, meaning that the companies that make these electronics pay to ensure they can be recycled at the end of their useful lives.

Across the country, 25 states have electronics recycling laws and Washington is consistently one of the highest performers.

In 2016, Washington consumers recycled 5.05 pounds of electronics per person. That high rate is made possible in part by the convenient statewide collection network of more than 350 free drop-off sites for used electronics.

More than half of these sites are charitable organizations that are able to find new homes for the functional electronics they receive, which saves even more energy and resources.

Go to the website or call 1-800-RECYCLE to find free drop-off sites.

Local drop-off sites:
  • Goodwill Shoreline – 14500 15th Ave NE
  • St Vincent de Paul Shoreline – 13555 Aurora Ave N
  • Deseret Industries Shoreline – 17935 Aurora Ave N
  • Salvation Army Shoreline -15403 Westminster Way N and van at Fred Meyer, 18325 Aurora Ave N

Choose to Reuse

You are invited to the Choose to Reuse event, Saturday, June 24 -- where your unwanted household items you thought about taking to the dump may now find a new home!

This event is designed to divert goods from the waste stream and make them available to neighbors and non-profits who can use them.

You do not have to drop something off to pick something up. This event is not a swap meet!! Choose to Reuse is hosted by the City to facilitate the exchange of usable items to reduce waste and encourage reuse and repurpose.

Review the list for acceptable items you can bring to the event. All items must be in good working order. If the item is accepted, someone will have the opportunity to bring it home to reuse or repurpose.

  • Not Accepted:  large appliances, bathtubs, pianos, televisions, computers, propane tank

Local kite flyer gets creative

Sunday, May 28, 2017

Tape the plastic sleeves together - use strong tape
There are many of us who still enjoy getting the Seattle Times delivered to our door each day.

Along with the newspaper comes a narrow plastic bag that begs for a way to be used.

Bob Plant, Shoreline kite builder and flyer, has figured out a way to use these bags by creating long kite tails.

He cuts the closed end off of each bag and tapes them together end to end to create tube tails that may be as much as 50 or more feet long.

Bob is involved in Windlessinshoreline, Seattle's only indoor kite flying group.

Connect with the group on Facebook or email

“Lost” glasses provide sight to new owners

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer standing next to the boxes holding thousands of lost and donated glasses being provided to the Lions Club Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC)

They have been orphaned on buses, forgotten on light rail, and abandoned at Park and Rides. Others have been taking up space in junk drawers in homes throughout the region.

They are eyeglasses: thousands of them.

Tuesday, Metropolitan King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer joined with the Lions Club in Auburn to give the homeless eyewear a new lease on life on the noses of people in need of vision help.

“Too often, the ability to see clearly is taken for granted,” said von Reichbauer. “Whether through helping a child read, an adult succeed in her job, or a senior maintain his independence, the small act of recycling these lost glasses turns the misfortune of one into the fortune of another.”

For close to two decades, von Reichbauer has worked with Metro Transit to collect glasses abandoned on Metro buses and sent to Metro’s Lost and Found. Eyewear not claimed by their owner are delivered by von Reichbauer to the Lions Club and their Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC) program.

LERC checks the prescriptions of the lenses and distributes the glasses to programs throughout the region and throughout the world to provide proper vision to people who cannot afford prescription eyewear.

von Reichbauer and the Lions Club are always on the “lookout” for old glasses in need of a good home.
