Help protect your pipes – and save money - by recycling used cooking oil and fats

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

from King county Department of Natural Resources and Parks

Don’t pour leftover fryer oil and kitchen grease it down the drain – grease sticks to the inside of sewer pipes and can build up to such a point that it blocks the entire pipe, leading to expensive and unpleasant clean-ups.

The King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks has partnered with General Biodiesel to provide residents with a safe, environmentally-friendly way to dispose of used cooking oil and grease so it can be recycled instead of ending up in landfills or drains.

During the holiday season, General Biodiesel will provide drop-off locations where people can bring their unwanted cooking fats and grease.

There are two locations in Shoreline:

    • Central Market: 15505 Westminster Way N, Shoreline 98133
        - Underneath awning at the main entrance. This one is available 24/7.
    • Solid Waste Transfer Station: 2300 N 165th St, Shoreline 98133.  Tell the gate attendant you are dropping off used cooking oil and you'll be directed to the collection station.

To ensure safe and secure transport and disposal of your fats and grease, King County and General Biodiesel suggest putting the cooled material from fryers, pots or pans in a sealed container.

At the disposal tank, slowly pour the grease into the collection container to avoid splatter and mess. Be sure to close the community collection tank lid when you’re finished. Take your own containers home and leave nothing behind but the oil you deposited.

Shoreline CleanScapes update - garbage pickup - maybe

CleanScapes provides garbage and recycling service to Shoreline.

Your garbage and recycling may or may not be picked up today in Shoreline - it depends on how accessible your street is.

CleanScapes cancelled Tuesday collections because of the road conditions and used some of their trucks to help with sanding and snow removal in Shoreline (see story).

Normally, that would push everyone ahead a day - Tuesday on Wednesday; Wednesday on Thursday, and so on.

They had already planned to be off on Thanksgiving and collect Thursday on Friday and Friday on Saturday.

They are putting their trucks on the road for the accessible residential areas, so Tuesday and Wednesday customers may get service, if they live in a flat area.

"Residential customers who do not receive service today should place all carts (garbage, recycle, food waste/yard debris) in the usual collection location on their next collection day.

"Residents can put out double the amount of garbage at no extra cost. Recycling and food waste/yard debris will be collected as usual."

CleanScapes will be providing limited commercial collection service.

If you do put your collection bins out, make sure they are out of the roadway.

Recycling Superstar contest won by LFP resident

Sunday, October 17, 2010

Sharon Blackadder, LFP
 from the LFP Towne Crier

The creative talent of King County residents has been brought to light with the King County Solid Waste Division’s "Recycling Superstar" contest, in which people shared their ideas on how they go the extra mile to recycle items, rather than throwing them in the garbage.  (see original story)

Lake Forest Park resident and top prize winner Sharon Blackadder says recycling is second nature in her household. She recycles pizza boxes and other food scraps and food soiled paper along with her weeds and ivy in her curbside yard waste cart.

When she's done recycling her milk and juice containers, cardboard and other recyclables, there's very little garbage left and it all fits into the smallest garbage container Blackadder’s garbage hauler offers.

For their efforts, five people who submitted recycling tips during the August 16 to September 14 online contest have won great "experience" prizes, including a trip to Victoria, tickets to a Seattle Sounders game, and more.

Surveys have shown that while most King County residents do recycle, more than half of what ends up at the County’s Cedar Hills Regional Landfill can easily be recycled. Food scraps and food-soiled paper, both of which can be placed in the curbside yard waste cart for recycling, make up more than one third of residential garbage.
"We knew there were some serious recyclers out there who are really going the extra mile to recycle all they can," said Gerty Coville, King County Solid Waste Division project manager.

"The stories they tell really illustrate how easy and fun it can be to recycle more and recycle better at home."
A panel of King County recycling experts judged the entries based on "accuracy and level of recycling effort, creativity and detail."  The Recycling Superstar contest is sponsored by the Division’s "Recycle More. It’s Easy to Do" campaign to help reduce the amount of recyclables that end up in the landfill.

King County searching for best and brightest recycling superstars

Friday, August 13, 2010

From August 16 to September 14, King County invites its residents outside the city of Seattle to submit their stories of how well they recycle, as part of the County’s first “Recycling Superstar” online contest.

Residents are encouraged to visit the website and enter a written description of their stellar recycling habits for a chance to win one of five prizes, including Seattle Sounders tickets, a Victoria Clipper trip with an overnight hotel stay, a getaway to Friday Harbor, and a night at the Roosevelt Hotel in Seattle with tickets to Jazz Alley. Entrants can submit an original video or photos along with the written description. All submissions must be received by September 14.

“We know there are many residents out there who really go the extra mile to recycle all they can,” said Gerty Coville, King County Solid Waste Division project manager. “We want to highlight these efforts so others can see how to recycle more and recycle better at home. Many people don’t realize that by recycling more, you can often reduce the size of your garbage can and your garbage bill.”

A panel of King County recycling experts will judge the entries based on accuracy and level of recycling effort, creativity and detail. The top five entrants will win experience prizes. All the prizes have been donated by local merchants.

The Recycling Superstar contest is sponsored by the Division’s “Recycle More. It’s Easy to Do” campaign to help reduce the amount of recyclables that end up in the landfill.

Although most King County residents participate in their curbside recycling program, more than half of what ends up in King County’s Cedar Hills Regional Landfill is readily recyclable. Food scraps and food-soiled paper, both of which can be placed in the yard waste cart for recycling, make up more than one third of residential garbage.

Entry Details

Eligibility: This contest is open to King County residents, outside the city of Seattle. One entry allowed per household. King County employees may not participate.

How to enter: Submit a text description of 250 words or less to the website.  Participants can also submit an original video of three minutes or less in length, or up to four original photos. Submit videos and photos by including a link in the entry form. Entries must contain your name, address, phone number, e-mail address and a description of your recycling habits.

Prizes
  • Victoria Clipper trip for two, including hotel stay
  • Lodging and spa stay in Friday Harbor
  • Overnight stay for two at the Roosevelt Hotel in Seattle, including Jazz Alley tickets
  • Two Seattle Sounders game tickets plus a gift certificate to Panera Bread

CleanScapes Community Waste Reduction Rewards Competition

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Reduce Waste And Win
Team up with your neighbors to reduce waste and win a community improvement project installed and maintained by CleanScapes, your garbage and recycling company.

  • Pocket park
  • Public bench and lighting
  • Neighborhood entrance landscaping, sign, lighting
  • Neighborhood service day
Why Reduce Waste?
Every day, approximately 60 tons of garbage are collected in the City of Shoreline and buried in the King County landfill. Roughly 75% of that garbage could have been recycled, or better yet, not created in the first place. Yes, we need to recycle our waste, but there is a better way.

Stop waste before it happens!
  • REDUCE purchases of wasteful or unneeded products.
  • REUSE the products you already have.
  • COMPOST at home.
How The Competition Works
To win, simply reduce the total tons of waste (garbage, recycling and food scraps and yard debris) you produce. The neighborhood collection area with the largest percent decrease in total tons during the competition period will win. Contest period is Fall 2009 to Spring 2010.

For more details, visit CleanScapes on the web.
