Shoreline Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Arts Plan Online Open House - citizen feedback requested

Friday, December 2, 2022

The City of Shoreline launched an online open house as part of the process to update the Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Arts (PROSA) Plan, which must be done every six years.

Through the development of the PROSA Plan, we will better understand community needs and wants. The Plan will establish a long-term vision that will help guide how money will be spent and what services the City will offer for the next six years.

This latest edition will merge the Public Arts Plan with the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan. These plans were last updated in 2017. Since that time, the city has grown and changed. To ensure community priorities are truly reflected in decisions, we are looking to create opportunities for inclusive participation throughout the planning process.

The PROSA Plan will reflect the voices of Shoreline community members and support the vision of Shoreline as a thriving, welcoming city where people of all ages, cultures, and economic backgrounds love to live, work, and play, and most of all, to call home. support

The PROSA Plan guides decisions about:
  • Buying land for parks and natural areas
  • Developing new recreation facilities
  • Offering recreation and cultural programs and events
  • How best to maintain the parks, natural spaces, and facilities
  • Where and what public art should look like in our community

The online open house provides an opportunity for you to learn about the plan update, share your comments and ideas on an interactive map, and take a community survey.

We expect to have a draft plan available for public review in summer 2023. The PROSA Plan must be adopted by the Shoreline City Council, which is expected to consider the draft plan in late 2023.

Shoreline PROSA Plan online open house
  • When: Now through Friday, Jan. 27
  • Where: https://shorelineparks.infocommunity.org/
  • Details: When you visit the website, you will learn about the PROSA Plan and you can provide your ideas and input to aid the City in its development of the 2024-2030 PROSA Plan.

Shoreline's strong, welcoming, free programs for youth have openings for paid, part-time adult staff

Tuesday, September 13, 2022

The City of Shoreline Youth and Teen Development programs are free to Middle and High School students in Shoreline.

The programs run throughout the school year, including the Hang Time Programs at both Middle schools, our Shoreline Teen Center in the Richmond Highlands neighborhood east of Aurora, and a variety of classes and events.

These programs are welcoming, safe spaces with free healthy food and amazing resources like our onsite Mental Health Therapist and our Youth Outreach employment program – both of which are funded by a King County Best Starts for kids grant.

As another example, we are also hosting the “After the Game Party” event after the Shorewood/Shorecrest football game at Spartan Recreation Center to provide a fun safe atmosphere for High School students to choose after that game.

The City of Shoreline’s Youth and Teen Development Programs have been a beacon for Teens in the area for more than 25 years and we are one of the few organizations still offering completely free Teen Programs with no barriers to participation in the Shoreline area.

Our Shoreline Teen Center is open Monday- Friday afterschool and Friday and Saturday late night and requires no registration or prior sign-up. Any middle school or high school student is welcome to drop-in for food, games, crafts, sports, classes or just to hang out in a safe space with friends.

We really have some amazing programming options and a really great lead staffing team. Unfortunately, we (like a lot of folks) are really struggling to get committed people to staff our programming. We’re looking for people who want to make a difference in our youth community, and have fun while doing it for 10-20 hours a week.

If you have questions, contact recreation supervisor Amanda Zollner 206-801-2642 or azollner@shorelinewa.gov

Attention hikers: Take ample water, a water filter, and electrolytes

Sunday, August 21, 2022

Pacific Crest Trail in Washington
The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office recently related a story about rescuing dehydrated hikers from the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and Kittitas County Search and Rescue have responded to three medical emergencies from backcountry hikers in the last two days, all related to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

One subject was airlifted out of the Deep Lake area after a rescue ground team reached him and found him unable to walk or even ride a horse due to severe dehydration.

Two others had to be provided emergency care in the field, including IV fluids, before they could walk out with the help of ground teams to get full medical care. All three were experienced hikers in good physical condition.

August in Kittitas County sees hundreds of northbound Pacific Crest Trail hikers and other backcountry users in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

In the kind of extreme weather in our near-future forecast, all backcountry users need to have ample water (and a water filter) and electrolytes to mitigate the heat.

Hiking up switchback trails and over passes in 90+ degree heat will deplete even the toughest of hikers. Heat-related illness and emergency can come on very suddenly and can be deadly.
