Council proclaims July Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Month in Shoreline

Tuesday, June 26, 2018

Swingin' Summer Eve at Cromwell Park
Summer is here, which means it is time to get out and discover the great things happening at your local parks and recreation centers.

This July, explore the “undiscovered” roles of local parks and recreation as we celebrate Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Month in Shoreline.

A variety of fun activities are available for residents of all ages and abilities — including Swingin’ Summer Eve at Cromwell Park on July 18, the Noon Concert Series every Tuesday at parks throughout the city, Shakespeare in the Park at Richmond Beach Community Park on July 25th, urban forest restoration events, low tide beach walks, and so much more.

Shoreline is celebrating Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Month as part of an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Playgrounds, sports leagues, and summer camps are just a few of the things that come to mind when we think of parks and recreation. But, parks and recreation is so much more than that.

Shoreline Walks - in Hamlin Park

During the month of July, discover all the ways parks and recreation can improve the quality of life, like restoring the urban forest to improve habitat and tree canopy, walking programs for active adults that encourage community-based exercise, outdoor education programs at Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, summer trips and hikes, and more.

NRPA encourages people that support parks and recreation to share why they think it is important to explore and discover all of what Shoreline’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services has to offer with the hashtag #DiscoverJuly.

For more information about Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services events and activities visit Shoreline’s Community Events Calendar at shorelinewa.gov/calendar.

The National Recreation and Park Association is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that all Americans have access to parks and recreation for health, conservation and social equity.

Shoreline identifies site for potential community & aquatics center

Tuesday, June 12, 2018

Location of future Shoreline Community and Aquatics Center
on Midvale, near City Hall
Photo from Google

As part of the ongoing effort to look at the potential development of a new community and aquatics center, the City has identified a preferred site for the facility in Town Center.

The City has chosen WRNS Studio to develop site designs and construction cost estimates for a community and aquatics center located at 17828 Midvale Avenue N. This is the current site of Storage Court of Shoreline.

Also included in the site location are eight properties on the west side of Stone Avenue between N 178th and N 180th Streets. The City has notified the property owners of its interest in potentially purchasing the properties. However, it is possible that the final design for the facility will not require the City to purchase all eight properties.

As part of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan adopted last year, the City conducted an Aquatic/Community Feasibility Study to research options for replacing the Shoreline Pool and Spartan Recreation Center. The study analyzed community needs and potential sites for a combined community and aquatic center.

An important part of the feasibility study was an assessment of potential locations for the future facility. The study considered very general locations throughout Shoreline. The preliminary designs and cost estimates prepared as part of the study were based on a generic site of about 4.5 acres in size.

Working with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services / Tree Board and through a community process, the City developed a series of evaluation criteria for assessing location options. The criteria included:
  • central location
  • meets city development goals
  • frequent transit access
  • vehicular accessibility
  • pedestrian/bike access
  • visibility
  • ease of land assembly
  • availability of publicly owned land
Based on these criteria, the City determined the Midvale Avenue location would be the optimal site for a new community and aquatics center. Its adjacency to the Interurban Trail and the Park at Town Center, visibility and proximity to Aurora Avenue, and frequent transit service make it an ideal location.

The location also offers the opportunity to become a signature civic center to anchor future town center development. WRNS Studio, through the proposed scope of work, will prepare designs and cost estimates that take into account the unique characteristics of this site.

King County constructed the Shoreline Pool in 1971 as part of the Forward Thrust Bond program. Based on an assessment of the pool completed in 2013, it is in need of significant health and safety upgrades and other major maintenance to keep it operational.

The Spartan Recreation Center is also showing its age and will require renovations if it is going to continue to meet the recreational needs of our growing and diverse community.

Instead of reinvesting in these two facilities separately, the City believes this is an opportunity to combine the functionality of an aquatic center and a community center in a central location. This will allow the City to provide a better and more efficient experience to Shoreline residents. Given the level of reinvestment being called for at the pool and the future needs of the Spartan Recreation Center, the City believes this is an opportune time to develop a comprehensive, long-range plan for the pool and community center.

Shoreline’s 2018 Million Stair Challenge

Monday, May 28, 2018

The stairs at RB Saltwater Park

Challenge yourself and compete against others in this free month long fitness event.

Did you know that stair climbing burns more calories per minute than jogging? The City of Shoreline invites you to take advantage of the many benefits of stair climbing by competing in the 7th Annual Million Stair Challenge. The month-long challenge starts on June 1 and encourages you, your family, and your friends to climb as many stairs as possible in the name of health, fitness, and friendly competition.

We started this popular health and fitness event in 2012 as a way to bring attention to the benefits of stair climbing. It also provided a great opportunity to draw people out to Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, famous for its sweeping view of Puget Sound and its large bank of 188 steps leading up from the water.

You can climb the stairs at Saltwater Park or anywhere else you choose, including at work or home or at your favorite climbing spot in or outside of Shoreline. There is no need to sign up, just log your total flights each day in the online tracking system and see your totals and standings posted in real time on the website.

Along with creating some friendly competition, you are encouraged to set a personal goal for the month, with small prizes awarded if you reach your goal. At the end of the challenge, we invite all participants to a closing potluck on Saturday, June 30 at 6:30pm at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, 2021 NW 190th St. Bring a dish to share and join us at the picnic shelter located at the bottom of the stairs. We will award prizes to participants who make their climbing goals.
