Free event for Middle School students from Shoreline Recreation

Thursday, September 5, 2024

Calling all middle schoolers! Join us at the Teen Center on Saturday nights for sports, games, art, and food. Our staff run activities catered to middle school aged youth and create a safe, supervised space for your youth to hang out with friends, meet new people, and have a great time!

Middle School Night is on Saturday nights (through the school year) from 6:00pm - 10:30pm. This is a free, drop-in program, no pre-registration required.

One Saturday a month there will be a themed event for Middle School Night, which will result in a higher number of youth attending.

These events will have a combination of free Eventbrite registration and drop-in allowed, but if we reach maximum capacity, drop-ins arriving after we have reached capacity may not be allowed in until other youth have left so we don't exceed safe numbers in our facility.

Sno-King International Folk Dance Club

Calling all folk dancers! Hop in and join us in doing dances from around the world.

Every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00pm we start with requests, have a short lesson, and follow a program of dances, mixed with lots more requests. We supply partners.

So many dances, so little time!

We do couple, line, set, and individual dances.

Do you prefer the common rhythms, like 3/4 and 4/4? Or do you like the asymmetrical rhythms like 7/8 and 9/8? We do both.

In September we will learn dances from Belgium, Scotland, Greece and Turkey, and brush up on some others.
  • Wednesday, September 11, 2024 we start at 6:45pm for a set dance lesson; sets take longer to learn.
  • Saturday, September 14, is our monthly party, from 7:00-9:00pm, with no teaching. You may bring finger food snacks to share.

Members $6.00; others $8.00. First time free!

City of Mountlake Terrace considering future of Recreation Pavilion

Sunday, August 18, 2024

By Diane Hettrick

Here's a story familiar to Shoreline residents. The Rec Pavilion in Mountlake Terrace is aging, should have been replaced 15 years ago, parts are no longer available, and it has reached a point where something has to be done.

When Shoreline was faced with this issue, they tore down the pool and planted grass.

MLT ia a small city and swimming pools are very expensive. The Rec Pavilion has extensive use and it's no secret that many of its users live in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Following is an article published in MLTNews.com
Mountlake Terrace Recreation Pavilion

While beloved for generations, the Mountlake Terrace Recreation Pavilion is worse for the wear. The Mountlake Terrace City Council is scheduled to hear a presentation at its Thursday, Aug. 22 meeting about the status of the building and options that mainly involve renovation or replacement.

“We knew eventually this would be a discussion we’d have to have,” said Jeff Betz, the city’s recreation and parks director. “It’s been recommended for replacement for over 15 years now.”

Betz was citing the work of the Civic Facilities Advisory Task Force, a volunteer group that spent much of 2008 studying city Hall, the police department and the Pavilion.

Since then, not much has changed: The Pavilion is aging beyond repair, and any fix is going to cost money.

The Recreation Pavilion is a distinctive, hexagonal work of 1960s architecture. According to a city news release, its 33,000 square feet host an award-winning pool, plus spaces for dance, fitness, child care, racquetball and an indoor playground. The facility saw 270,000 visits in 2023. That figure is especially striking in a town of 24,260.

Maintenance is challenging: Many of the needed parts no longer are produced. Some repairs would require months of closing the doors. Plumbing and electrical systems look like you walked into a time-warp. Sites like eBay don’t sell these items anymore.

Earlier this year, staff examined the panels of the system that controls the flow of air around the pool. They found spots that were rusted through, something they likened to seeing footage from a shipwreck.

As thecouncil decides next steps, public outreach will be crucial, Betz said.

“There aren’t many public pools anymore, because they’re expensive,” he said. “It’s a lot for one small city to manage by ourselves. We can’t do anything this big without talking to our community first. The Pavilion is an important part of people’s lives.”

City council meetings start at 7 p.m. at city hall and via Zoom. They also are streamed at www.youtube.com/cityofmlt. As a reminder, 24-hour registration is required to provide comment via Zoom. More info: www.cityofmlt.com/129.

State Parks updating camping, moorage fees

Sunday, August 11, 2024

Deception Pass photo by Wayne Pridemore

OLYMPIA – Aug. 8, 2024 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is updating its camping and moorage fees for 2025 to support its operations amid inflation impacts and rising costs.

The camping fee changes will take effect on May 15, 2025, and the moorage fee changes will take effect Jan. 1, 2025. Because visitors can make reservations up to nine months in advance, on Aug. 15, 2024, campers will see the new fees reflected when they make reservations for May 15, 2025, and beyond.

Under the new fee rates, standard campsite costs will increase between $3 to $5, partial utility campsite will increase $5 to $6 and full-utility sites will increase $6. This proposal does not change primitive site fees, which would remain $12, or roofed accommodation fees, which vary.

Daily watercraft launching fees will increase to a flat rate of $7, daily moorage per foot charges will increase to $1, daily moorage minimums and buoy moorage will increase to $23, annual moorage per foot charges will increase to $7 and annual moorage minimums will increase to $80.

The proposed change was presented at the April 10 work session held by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. Parks Director Diana Dupuis approved the proposal on April 29.

Understanding finances impact equitable access to the outdoors, the agency takes any fee increase very seriously. Since the last camping fee change, inflation has increased by more than 20 percent, while infrastructure maintenance needs have also increased. From fiscal year 2019 to fiscal year 2023, the agency’s utility costs increased by 37 percent.

Reduced-rate camping is provided to those eligible through five discount pass programs, equating to roughly 17 percent of the value of the camping we provide.

Background

Parks manages more than 6,400 campsites and 40 marine parks across the state, as well as more than 8,500 feet of moorage in Puget Sound. The agency is funded from a mix of state revenue and user fees, with user fee revenue making up roughly two-thirds of its operating budget. Parks depends on visitor fees to maintain camping and moorage infrastructure and provide a high level of customer service and recreational access.

Help refurbish Stanley the Sea Serpent

Monday, June 24, 2024

Stanley the Sea Serpent is the friendly greeter at the playground for Lake Forest Park Elementary. Over the years, hundreds of children have ridden the waves on his back.

A second generation is now delighting in Stanley.

Stanley, however, is a little worse for wear and needs to be refurbished.

The school district, alas, has no funds for aging sea serpents, so some of his old friends are trying to raise money to make him bright and new.

They have created a GoFundMe site and hope that people will add a little (or a lot) of money to help them meet their goal.

Organizers say "We hope he will bring smiles and balancing skills to kids for generations to come!
