Sunday, March 27, 2011

The Tuesday Quick-Start Shoreline Business Workshop for start-up, existing or potential business owners will be held on March 29 from 12 noon to 1:30 pm at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Avenue N.

Quick-Start Shoreline is presented by Shoreline Community College Small Business Accelerator and the City of Shoreline. The sessions are free and open to the public; feel free to bring a brown bag lunch or a snack.

This week we are proud to welcome back professional organizer Maulitta Brown, who will help you:

Take Control of Your E-Mail: free up time for sales calls and customer service!

Many of us get hundreds of e-mails a day and figuring out how to manage them can be daunting. Come to this class if you:
  • Are overwhelmed by your inbox
  • Have hundreds of e-mails and you are afraid the important items are getting lost amongst the ‘junk’
  • Spend more time than you’d like each day managing e-mail when you should be making sales calls or servicing clients

About Maulitta Brown
Maulitta Brown, owner of Clear Intentions, is extremely passionate about helping people get organized and create a more intentional home. She loves to help people feel more in control and at peace in their homes by helping them clear the clutter from their homes and lives. It is her belief that your space, whether it be your home or office should truly reflect who you are and what you want out of your life. When you get clear about how you want your life to be, it’s easier to clear out the old, which in turn makes room for new and exciting things to come in. Once you’ve created a space that truly feels good to you and reflects who you are, it is amazing how it can transform your life!

Specializing in residential spaces and small businesses, Maulitta uses a unique blend of professional organizing along with Life Architecture® to work with her clients to achieve the home or office they really love. Life Architecture is the practice of designing a space that is an intentional and a conscious reflection of one’s life vision, while healing and shifting life patterns that no longer serve.

Maulitta has 17 years of banking experience in a variety of positions — all of which required exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Because she is a working mom as well as manager of her husband's business she has great understanding and compassion for people who find themselves juggling many different roles.

Maulitta’s fantastic communication skills and complete lack of judgment makes people feel instantly comfortable with her.

Giving back to the community and helping others in need is also very important to her, a portion of all income is donated to World Vision and Hopelink.

Tuesday's Business Brown Bag Lunch and Learn - how to reduce employee theft

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

The Business Quick-Start Lunch and Learn group at City Hall
The free business start-up lunch-time seminar on Tuesday, November 30, will have a guest speaker who is an expert in loss prevention.

At the Tuesday session he will discuss "Tips for Avoiding the 'Hidden' Expense: How to Reduce/Eliminate Employee Theft – Beyond Pens and Pencils."

Anyone can participate. The sessions are aimed at people who are starting businesses.

They are held from 12:00 - 1:30 pm Tuesday at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline 98133. There is no charge thanks to sponsors, but participants should bring their own lunch.

Are you concerned about employee theft? You have good reason. Bankers, financial consultants and assistant district attorneys agree that internal employee theft or embezzlement is an increasingly frequent and costly problem facing today's small business community. Employees helping themselves to company funds cost U.S. businesses about $550 billion annually, according to a recent report from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. The report also revealed that more than 46 percent of all workplace fraud happens to small businesses with fewer than 100 employees.

The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that employee theft is growing by as much as 15 percent each year. One-third of all business bankruptcies are due to employee theft, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The average business loses 6 percent of its annual revenue to fraud and abuses by employees, according to the American Management Association.

The reason why small businesses are so vulnerable is that many don't have adequate internal controls. Join us for an informative session where you will learn:

  • The importance of having a loss prevention policy
  • Theft Statistics
  • Why Employees steal
  • How to prevent customer and employee theft
  • Training employees on theft prevention
  • Policies recommended to be put in place
  • How cameras can be effective...or not
  • How to recover hidden dollars on customers who shoplift or who have passed a bad check

Speaker Doug Rector
Founder of Northwest Loss Prevention Consultants, Doug Rector has over fifteen years in the retail field of loss prevention. Doug started Northwest Loss Prevention to help smaller businesses that didn't have a loss prevention department recognize the need of “proactive” loss prevention (prevent loss before it occurs). Along with consulting small businesses in the area of loss prevention, NWLPC also offers mystery shopping services, and has just added pre-employment background checks. Doug has recently completed the Private Investigation Certificate program at the University of Washington and he is licensed by the state of Washington as a Private Investigator. Doug also teaches mystery shopping classes at Renton Technical College in Renton, WA and is an active member of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Business Network International (BNI), the Oregon and Washington Restaurant Association and the Washington Association of Legal Investigators (WALI).

This event will be facilitated by Sandy Bjorgen of Improv-able Results.
