Creating art at Echo Lake Elementary brought the community together

Thursday, June 22, 2023

Community art project at Echo Lake Elementary shows their heart

By Kaija Dalan

The Echo Lake Elementary PTA started doing a community art night as a way to both beautify the school and connect as a school community.

Art brings people together and it is one of the easiest ways to open conversations with others. It was so fun to watch both kids and parents be creative.

They were painting 4x4 squares of wood. Being only 4x4 they didn’t have to make anything elaborate so pressure was low.

I never know exactly how things will turn out. I have a tentative plan in my head but kids are hard to plan for, so flexibility and adaptability are critical.

When all the pieces were done, and ready to go on the fence along Ashworth at the school, we didn’t know exactly how we were going to hang them till we started.

We tried different layouts on the sidewalk. The heart was created on the spot with all the assorted colored pieces. So it’s always cool to see how things turn out.

Kids love showing off what they did and trying to find their square on the fence.

PTA will continue to try to bring the community together with events like this, back to school bbq, trunk-or-treat, science night etc.

Since Covid people are longing for the connections with others and the school. So we are trying to create new and reestablish old traditions to foster that.

Next year, and until the budget issue is rectified, we will need families at the school more than ever to support our kids and staff.

We hope PTA events like this will help encourage families to participate in whatever manner that they can because they feel comfortable and connected and proud of the school.

It took hundreds of hands to make the new art, each piece unique and different. It wouldn’t have been the same if just a few people did it. It took the whole Echo Lake community to make it as unique and special as it is.

Dunn Lumber graciously donated all the wood, so that was amazing. Big thank you to them for supporting local schools and the PTA.

For the third year in a row, the Sno-King School Retirees association donated $500 to The Works, the Shoreline PTA Council clothing room.

The Association has donated annually to three organizations, located in the three school districts where their members taught.

Besides The Works, they also donate $500 to the Northshore Foundation for their Homeless Student Services and to the Washington Kids in Transition which serves the Edmonds School District.

All three organizations benefit the children in each school district.

Washington Kids in Transition benefits homeless students.

The SnoKing School Retirees also do a service project. "When we started out we helped to buy snack items for Washington Kids that they received on their school bus when being delivered to the place they were staying," said Board Member Jim Siscel.
"Then we did a service project on a Saturday stuffing the snack bags. This snack bag project is not happening now after Covid. So this year the money will be used to purchase summer time art supplies. We will put the supplies together on a Saturday in April."

The $500 comes from their membership dues, donations at meetings and individual members.

PTA Legislative Priorities: Support educational services for students with disabilities

Sunday, November 20, 2022

A $400 million shortfall remains between what it costs to support educational services for students with disabilities and what the state and federal government funds.

Students with disabilities regularly face a lack of inclusion, staffing shortages, assistive technology, and other critical supports.

Educational services for students with disabilities aren’t “extra” and shouldn’t be funded like they are.

One of WSPTA’s top five legislative priorities is addressing funding, inclusion, and supports in special education.

Gift Card and Toy Drive for families in need in the Shoreline School District

Saturday, November 19, 2022

The Holiday Basket event, which provides gifts for the children of Shoreline Schools families in need, is a cooperative project of the Shoreline PTA Council, City of Shoreline, HopeLink, Lake Forest Park Rotary, and Shoreline Fire Department.

It is coordinated by the Dale Turner Family YMCA. Every PTA in the school district collects items for the children. The fire department specifically collects toys.

Older students are given gift cards.

In 2020 almost a thousand children were registered for the event.

To fill these holiday baskets for Shoreline Schools students and their families, the YMCA is collecting donations. You may donate online through the YMCA (please note both "Dale Turner YMCA" and "Holiday Baskets").

They are also in need of new, unwrapped toys, unused gift wrap, and gift cards (Amazon, Target, and Fred Meyer are popular, with a $25 value preferred).

Donations can be dropped off at the Dale Turner Family YMCA by Friday, December 9, 2022. YMCA address: 19290 Aurora Ave. N, Shoreline, WA 98133.
