Shoreline PTA Council celebrates outstanding volunteers and advocates

Thursday, June 2, 2022

Each year, PTAs across the country recognize outstanding volunteers and advocates who help to further the mission of ensuring the education, health and well-being of every child.

Due to the pandemic, the Shoreline PTA Council has not been able to celebrate local PTA award recipients in person for the past two years. We at Council were thrilled to invite local PTA leaders and their award recipients to a reception at Shorecrest High School last Thursday. It was a joy to gather and celebrate all recipients!

Council presented two awards this year:

Lisa Mischley, Golden Acorn

Lisa is the Executive Director of the Dale Turner YMCA, a role that she is new to just this year. When Shoreline PTA Council pulled together our community partners to discuss the future of the Holiday Baskets program, Lisa was on board right from the get-go.

The Holiday Baskets program has long provided food and gift support to Shoreline families in need.

When Council decided to retire the Holiday Baskets program to focus on other areas of support, Lisa inquired what would be done with the program. Hearing that it would likely dissolve, Lisa was quick to step in and work with the YMCA to become the lead organization for Holiday Baskets.

Under her team's guidance Holiday Baskets had another very successful event in December 2021 and will continue in the future to serve the greater Shoreline/LFP community.

Lisa is an amazing partner, leader and team member, and we are so lucky to have her in Shoreline. She spent countless hours learning the event, planning and coordinating our community partners to make this year special for our families. We are very fortunate to have such a great champion for our students and caregivers in our community. Congratulations, Lisa!

Missy Liu, Outstanding Advocate
Shoreline PTA Council
Missy Liu, Outstanding Advocate

Missy took the initiative earlier this year to ask to create an ad hoc Council committee to address mental health in our community (focused on students). Missy presented to the board as to the need for the committee.

Once approved, Missy created social media accounts and started reaching out to the community to recruit partners to help with the committee.

Missy received an overwhelming response (over 40 people) from volunteers who wanted to help with this committee. Missy is extremely well-organized, and worked diligently to structure the committee so that volunteers could use their strengths to benefit the goals of the committee.

Missy is a collaborative leader and truly lets the group guide the vision for this committee.

Missy planned an initial meeting of the group, including recruiting facilitators to lead breakout rooms. The meeting was well attended, and although it was fairly late in the year, Missy was able to partner with the city of Shoreline to present a Mental Health Awareness night with a relevant speaker (coming up on May 31!)

Missy has sent regular emails to the volunteer group to update them on current happenings, goals, and plans. Although we are recruiting for a co-Chair, Missy is currently leading the committee alone and doing a tremendous amount of work. She has embodied Advocacy in action! Congratulations, Missy!

Please join us in congratulating these outstanding individuals! Their commitment to Shoreline families and partnership with Shoreline PTAs makes our community stronger!

Shorewood PTSA honors Marianne Deal Stephens as their Outstanding Educator

Saturday, May 28, 2022

Marianne Deal Stephens
For their annual awards, the Shorewood PTSA honored Marianne Deal Stephens as their Outstanding Educator.

Here’s what was said about Marianne in her nomination:

Marianne is always on the ball when it comes to providing pathway and college preparedness/application information, providing just the right information at just the right time.

Her emails are full of so much relevant information, reassurance, and solid counsel, provided in an organized way that makes it easy to find just what is needed.

And, she serves literally EVERY single student on campus. As a parent, I find her to be responsive and reassuring. Both of my students (one now in college) brighten up whenever her name is mentioned at the dinner table, and both agree she is truly amazing, and an unsung hero.

Shorewood is truly made better by her presence.

Marianne is the former School Board reporter for the Shoreline Area News. She left the SAN for the job at Shorewood.

We have not been able to find anyone with her skill set to replace her, so it is good to know that she is appreciated at Shorewood!

Shoreline PTA Council approves a new Mental Health Committee and sponsors a free webinar with Lynette Pang

Wednesday, May 18, 2022

In response to the need to better support student and family mental health, in January the Shoreline PTA Council approved a new Mental Health committee.

The committee has 70 members with representation from professionals in the mental health field, families with lived mental health experience and parents wanting to make a difference.

The overarching goal of the committee is to reduce stigma around mental health for our families and students through:
  • Education, advocacy and support
  • A school culture where students feel safe when talking about their mental wellness
  • Knowledge of resources and services
Areas of action will include guest speakers, advocacy for local and legislative mental health policies, and informal support groups that focus on underrepresented community members (such as people of color; multilingual; foster care; families with disabilities, 504 plans and IEPs; families who are experiencing homelessness; and those who identify as LGBTQIA+).

Cross collaboration and partnerships with school district administrators and staff, PTAs, community mental health providers and the City of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park will help to bring the goals to fruition.

Lynette Pang, MA, LMHC
Free Webinar
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness month and Asian-American Pacific Islander heritage month, this committee has partnered with the City of Shoreline to present a free webinar by Lynette Pang, MA, LMHC and Shoreline resident and parent, to discuss the historical and current issues that have impacted Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and their mental wellness in our multicultural and multigenerational society.

Participants will learn how to find support and connection with AANHPI community members, local resources and organizations. This webinar will be on May 31, 2022 from 7-8:30pm and all are welcome and no pre-registration is required to attend.

Op-Ed: Shoreline PTA Council 6.12 urges Yes vote on Prop 1

Thursday, April 1, 2021

On April 27th, Shoreline residents will have an opportunity to approve critical legislation that would provide youth in our community, along with every resident, a chance to enjoy quality outdoor spaces.

Spending time outdoors, enjoying nature and being active, is well established to be associated with greater academic achievement and cognitive functioning. The critical role that physical activity plays in increasing physical and mental health in children, however, is more important now than ever.

Students have spent the last year learning remotely, sitting behind screens all day (and usually into the evening) for both school and socializing. Concerns with youth mental health are skyrocketing and our children are struggling to maintain social and community connections. Having accessible, inviting and quality outdoor spaces is critical to the health and well-being of everyone, but particularly so for our youth and particularly now.

Shoreline Proposition 1 includes improvements at four neighborhood parks and land acquisition and improvements at three others, including creating an education center and children’s garden accessible to people of all physical abilities at Kruckeberg Botanic Garden. Students and families would be thrilled with identified park enhancements such as playgrounds, splash-pads, multi-sports courts, trails, picnic shelters, improvements to play fields and a fully accessible play area for people of all physical abilities.

Students and families in Shoreline and our surrounding neighborhoods need places to gather in safe, healthy and active ways. Please vote YES for Shoreline Proposition 1!

Heather Segars, Co-President
