Op-Ed: Shoreline PTA Council endorses Shoreline Proposition 1

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

At our September 23, 2019 General Membership Meeting, the Shoreline PTA Council 6.12 voted to endorse Shoreline Proposition 1.

The proposed new Shoreline Aquatics, Recreation and Community Center, along with improvements at four area parks, is a strong investment in creating active gathering spaces for our families – including, notably, a fully accessible play area for people of all physical abilities.

Our primary reason for support, however, is the inclusion of an eight-lane pool for recreational and competitive swimming and diving, along with a fully accessible viewing area.

The Shoreline School District currently does not have a long-term facility that can support the swim and dive teams from Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools.

High school swimming is one of the very few non-cut sports that any student can join, including beginning swimmers, and this allows students from all backgrounds to participate in a sport during their high school career.

Swim and dive team students and their families attended many city and school board meetings in the last year to advocate for the continuation of a sport that has created an especially tight-knit and inclusive community.

PTA supports the critical role physical activity plays in increasing physical and mental health in children and understands that fitness and engagement in physical activities are associated with not only greater academic achievement and cognitive functioning, but through team sports can also enhance a sense of belonging and self-confidence.

It is imperative that we build strong communities that include safe, inclusive and accessible parks and community centers.

Shoreline is in need of a long-term facility that can comfortably host regional swim meets, maximize participation of year-round swimmers and attract an increasingly diverse population into the swim community.

Help ensure that high school swimming can continue in the Shoreline School District. Please support Proposition 1.

Silje Sodal and Amy Reed
Co-Presidents
Shoreline PTA Council 6.12

Beyond Birds and Bees: Bringing Home a New Message to Our Kids About Sex, Love, and Equality

Friday, September 27, 2019

Beyond Birds and Bees: Bringing Home a New Message to Our Kids About Sex, Love, and Equality, 6:30-8pm on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 - Meridian Park Elementary Cafeteria 17077 Meridian Ave N, Shoreline 98133

Bonnie Rough, author of Beyond Birds and Bees, will be speaking about how to raise young people with healthy, positive, shame-free, and egalitarian attitudes about bodies, gender, sex, and relationships. Q/A and book sale/signing to follow.

Hosted by Meridian Park PTSA, Syre PTA, Brookside PTA, and Highland Terrace PTA. Free childcare provided by Dale Turner YMCA.

Birds, Bees, and #MeToo: Helping Our Kids Build Gender Equality

Now that the #MeToo movement and current events have parents and educators asking how best to raise young people with healthy, positive, shame-free and egalitarian attitudes about bodies, gender, sex, and relationships, Bonnie J. Rough, author of Beyond Birds and Bees: Bringing Home a New Message to Our Kids About Sex, Love, and Equality, will share the practical lessons she learned as a parent and journalist when she took a close look at the world-famous Dutch approach to sex education, instrumental in producing one of the most sexually healthy and gender-equal societies on the globe.

With immediate takeaways for parents/caregivers and time for sharing and questions, this event will show how we can make the most of — and enjoy — life’s many opportunities to change the conversation with our kids as we empower them to build a more equitable and inclusive future.

Brookside PTA awards LFP Police Officer with Outstanding Service award

Thursday, May 16, 2019

Every PTA gives annual awards for service in the spring. The Golden Acorn goes to an outstanding PTA volunteer. Outstanding Educator goes to a teacher or administrator. There are other awards, which are not routinely given but are available if there is a person or organization which has been particularly of value to the PTA.

One of these awards is the Outstanding Service award. It is given to someone whose work - either paid or volunteer - has helped further the goals of the PTA, whose motto is "Every Child - One Voice."

This year, the Brookside PTA gave an Outstanding Service award to Lake Forest Park Police Officer George Colman.

Here is part of what was written about George

“…At Halloween he was roaming the neighborhood making sure kids and families were safe… During the February snowstorm George stopped to have a snowball fight with many of the children in LFP…. I have heard many amazing stories of George serving the LFP neighborhood and taking time to interact with the kids…”

LFP Police say "Great work George, you are a huge asset to this community and the department."

Shoreline PTA Council 6.12 honors 46 outstanding volunteers and educators

Thursday, May 9, 2019

Rebecca Miner, Supt. Shoreline Public Schools

At a celebration held at the Shoreline Center on May 2, 2019, Shoreline PTA Council 6.12 honored 46 outstanding volunteers and educators for their significant contributions in serving and advocating for students and families.

After a lovely dinner accompanied by Shoreline Junior Strings, Council Co-Presidents Susie Moore and Silje Sodal recognized each award winner, noting their contributions and sharing anecdotes about their dedication and service.

Individuals from each school were honored in primarily three categories: Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Advocate and Golden Acorn.

Four school custodians were honored for the
personal connection, care, and attention
that they bring to their jobs.

In addition to the many parents, teachers, staff and community members who were honored for their time, energy and expertise, a total of four custodians were given awards. Those who nominated the custodians noted that they, like many teachers and staff in our schools, often go above and beyond in their job descriptions to provide the personal connection, care and attention that results in a connected, supportive school community where students feel noticed and safe.

In addition, Shoreline PTA Council presented three awards.

From left: two representatives from Dale Turner Y, Rob Beem, Susie Moore
All received PTA Council awards

Dale Turner YMCA, recipient of the Outstanding Organization award, has significantly supported PTA events and programs throughout the District, serving as an integral partner in the Back to School Consortium and providing invaluable support to the Teen Gift program at the annual Holiday Baskets event. The Y has also generously provided free child care at various PTA meetings and other school related events, and they provide school student enrichment, program scholarships and Play EveryDAY recess coaching for local elementary schools.

In his role as Community Services Manager for the City of Shoreline, recently retired Outstanding Advocate Award winner Rob Beem provided significant leadership for the Back to School Consortium and regularly volunteered at Holiday Baskets.

The Council is particularly appreciative of Rob’s talent for community building and enthusiastic support for Shoreline students and families, noting that while Rob is an outstanding ‘idea guy’ and visionary, he is always willing to roll up his sleeves and do what’s necessary to make an event extra special.

Shoreline Junior Strings played during dinner

This year’s Council Golden Acorn winner, Susie Moore, has served students and families for many years, first as the Play and Learn teacher at Lake Forest Park Elementary, then as an active parent volunteer, Art Docent Chair, Room Parent, LFP PTA Co-President and Shoreline PTA Council Executive Committee Member, including as Vice President and Co-President.

She is also a District Family Advocate, supporting our more vulnerable students and families with compassion and skill. Susie is an exceptional leader with the ability to think big while also overseeing all the details, and as a skilled facilitator, communicator and visionary, she guides and encourages in ways that build strong, sustainable teams and creates effective organizations and systems.

She has led the effort to focus on family engagement at the local and Council level and encourages meaningful connections throughout PTA and the broader school community.

Extraordinary leaders and volunteers
support the Shoreline PTA Council

Our District and school community are fortunate to have so many extraordinary leaders and volunteers. Thank you!

My Tiny Hero’s Original Story by Calvin Nguyen

My tiny hero does not fly.
My tiny hero does not wear a cape.
My tiny hero does not have a disguised name.
My tiny hero does not fight crimes.
My tiny hero does not have enemies.
My tiny hero does not have super powers.

Almost six months ago,
I met this tiny hero of mine through her kicks and punches.
She was in my mom’s belly.
Every night I read to her and kissed her goodnight.

A month ago, I finally met this tiny hero of mine.
She came into this world and became my sunshine.
Her smiles make me smile.
Her coos make me happy.

My tiny hero brings joy.
My tiny hero wears mittens.
My tiny hero has a real name.
My tiny hero battles germs.
My tiny hero has lots of doctors.
My tiny hero has a different heartbeat,
Swoosh-oosh-oosh, not like your and mine.

My tiny hero will be strong in her surgery.
My tiny hero’s heart will heal.

I love my tiny hero.
It’s my baby sister!

For all you students preparing for next year’s Reflections program, the theme for 2019-2020 is: Look Within and your submissions will be due to your schools in the Fall.

Congratulations to Calvin!!

See previous article about Jerimiah's win HERE

Over the many years of the Reflections program, there have been very few Shoreline Reflections participants with pieces that advance to nationals, so it is a thrill to have three!
Congratulations to all Shoreline Reflections participants and to these three creative kids who will now represent Shoreline at Nationals!

Meridian Park PTA presents Stop the Bleed Apr 4

Sunday, March 24, 2019

MERIDIAN PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTSA PRESENTS
APRIL 4, 2019 6:30 - 8:00 PM IN THE MP SCHOOL LIBRARY

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

Blood loss is the leading cause of preventable death in multiple casualty events, like mass shootings, terrorist attacks and earthquakes. Significant external bleeding can also result from everyday events such as a motorcycle crash, or industrial accident.

Rapid control of bleeding at the scene of the event can be life-saving. That’s why we’re teaming up with volunteer coordinators Matt Alford, April Ingle, and Edmonds-based Disaster Medicine Project to train MP families to be informed bystanders.

This free 1.5 hour course teaches basic life-saving medical interventions, including a brief Active Shooter preparedness presentation and methods to control bleeding.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the principles of your response during an active shooter event.
  • Describe the progressive strategy for controlling hemorrhage.
  • Demonstrate wound packing and learn about topical hemostatic dressings.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg.

If you are interested in signing up for this event, please contact April Ingle at stopthebleed.shoreline@gmail.com . We have space for 30 participants (adults only please).

Our intention is to offer this monthly for the rest of the school year, so if you don’t make this class, you will be first for the next one on May 9th.

We look forward to serving you and strengthening our community!

Shorecrest student's poem goes to state PTA Reflections contest in Special Artist category

Monday, January 14, 2019

JJ and Veronica dressed as super heroes
at school shortly after JJ wrote the poem
Jerimiah "JJ" Johnson is a student of Veronica Cook from the Shorecrest A-team - a program for students with significant Autism.

The poem he entered in the PTA Reflections contest is headed to the state competition in the Washington State PTA Reflections Finals for the 106th WSPTA Convention, which will be held April 26-28 at the SeaTac Hilton Convention Center.

JJ is Shoreline’s first entry into the WAPTA Special Artist category.

The theme for this year's Reflections contact is "Heroes Around Me."
Example of Super Keys,
the app JJ uses to type with.

JJ, a non-verbal student, typed a poem about his teacher Veronica Cook using his district iPad and the assistive technology that is provided for him to be successful in communicating.

JJ and his ribbon from the Shoreline
Reflections competition
He uses a program called Super Keys to allow him to target the letters better.

When JJ started out at Shorecrest, Veronica was told he had no communication.

She quickly learned that this was not the case and worked with his family to advance the communication he had and to encourage him to use it as much as possible.

Now JJ is an award winning poet.

JJ was given the theme for the title of his poem and wrote this:

Hero Around Me
by JJ Johnson

You are the hero around me

You take care of all of your students

You kind and tough

You are a super teacher

I work hard because of you

You are my hero

You are my friend

Veronica said, "JJ is an inspiration to all the staff in the A-team classroom and I hope he is an inspiration to all of you too."

Meridian Park leaders ask for your contributions to the Angel Fund

Wednesday, December 19, 2018

Earn your wings by contributing
to a school's Angel Fund
Everywhere you look there are opportunities to give this time of year. From the bell ringers down at the Fred Meyer to the toy drives happening all over town.

It is the best time of year to reflect on one's own blessings, luck, and privilege and share with others.

In this spirit, the Meridian Park PTSA in partnership with the Meridian Park Neighborhood Association are reaching out to the wider Shoreline community to replenish your local school’s Angel Fund.

The Angel Fund helps families who are carrying negative balances on their food services accounts and is administered by the Shoreline School District Food Services. It relies solely on the kindness of the wider community and by those who know that in order for students to be successful in school they first need a full belly.

Meridian Park Elementary has only $20 in their Angel Fund and about $640 in total negative balances. As costs of housing/living in this area continue to rise rapidly, this situation is exacerbated. Meridian Park is not unique in this regard and PTAs and community organizations around this city are stepping up to help Shoreline students.

Negative account balances affect students who are on the free and reduced lunch program, as well as students who do not qualify for it. Some families transition from one program to the other and still cannot afford lunch and may still carry a negative balance.

Luckily, students will always be fed, however, as their negative balances accrue so does their debt to Shoreline Schools Food Services. Both positive and negative balances carry over year after year. Once a student graduates unpaid balances will be recorded as a fine. As students apply to colleges, their transcripts will be withheld until this fine is paid. More information regarding this policy can be found here.

Donation checks of any size are appreciated and can be mailed to Meridian Park Elementary, 17077 Meridian Ave. N, Shoreline, WA 98133. NOTE - please put "Angel Fund" in the memo section of your check. Cash can be dropped of at the school office with a note, and credit cards donations can be called in to 206-393-4102. No amount is too large or small.

If your student attends another school in our district and you wish to donate there, here is a link to the contact pages for each of our local Shoreline Schools

For everyone who is reading this, we truly thank you for considering our request. For those who can give this year, we thank you so very much for supporting our students. For those who are receiving, we share gladly, and to everyone, we wish you all the best in the coming year.

Beans at Meridian Park Elementary

Monday, December 17, 2018

For the Shoreline PTA Council Holiday Baskets, each school collects one kind of food. Their PTA coordinates the food drive, with the enthusiastic participation of the teachers and students.

Classrooms at the elementary level often compete against each other to see which can bring in the most.

Meridian Park was in charge of collecting cans of beans. Their goal was to collect 550 cans.

They got 1,515 cans!

If you missed the opportunity to donate, the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association food drive will continue to January 1, 2019 - and beans would be very welcome. (Information here)

600 families served at the PTA Holiday Baskets event

Boxes of food line the hallway at Kellogg MS
waiting to be given to families in need

Nearly 600 families were served on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the annual Holiday Baskets community giving event, held at Kellogg Middle School for students and families in the Shoreline School District.

Enough toys for 700 young children

In addition to receiving boxes of food items, a separate room provided a variety of stocking stuffers and gift cards for teens and an extensive selection of toys and gifts for those under 10.

Thanks so much to Neha Raichur, Heather Corbin and Robyn Mah for their leadership as coordinators for the Food Drive and to Lori Ramsay and Krista Keller for their year-round efforts to ensure cool gifts for our tweens and teens!

It takes hundreds of student and adult volunteers

Shoreline PTA Council is also grateful for its many incredibly generous and dedicated community partners, including Shoreline Fire Department, Shoreline School District, Dale Turner YMCA, City of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline Rotary Clubs, Center for Human Services, Hopelink, several churches, our very generous donors, and hundreds of students and adult volunteers.

It is powerful to see such commitment and service to support our LFP and Shoreline families who are in need of a little support this holiday season!

What Parents and Educators need to know about smart kids - Feb 4

Friday, December 14, 2018

Austina De Bonte
The Shoreline Hi Cap Advocacy Group, in partnership with the Shoreline PTA Council, is excited to welcome back Austina De Bonte, president of the Northwest Gifted Child Association (NWGCA), to Shoreline for her presentation, "What Parents and Educators Need to Know About Smart Kids."

Many people are surprised to learn that their bright child’s unique “quirks” are actually well-studied social and emotional behavior patterns that appear across large populations of highly intelligent children.

Whether it’s refusing to wear shirts with buttons or tags, overreacting to the slightest criticism, gravitating towards adults and older children, forgetting to turn in their homework, trouble with handwriting, anxiety about trying something new, or preferring a book to a party, these and many other perplexing behaviors are common in this population.

Learn what’s normal, what to expect as they grow, and why genuine challenge is vitally important for kids’ social and emotional development, as well as developing their academic talents, from the preschool and elementary years all the way to high school and beyond.

Speaker: Austina De Bonte of the Northwest Gifted Child Association

Monday, February 4, 2019
6:30pm - 8:30pm. Business meeting at 6:30pm, speaker at 7pm.
Shorewood High School Theatre, 17300 Fremont Ave N, 98133

This is a free speaker event for parents and for anyone who is interested.
