The Firefighters hold a toy drive every year for the Shoreline PTA Council Holiday Baskets, toys, and teen gift card drive. This year, the firefighters added the children in Mary's Place shelter to their giving.

The annual fire toy drive at Fred Meyer last Saturday did not garner the usual number of toys and the department has appealed to the community for toy and cash donations, to be delivered to any fire station in Shoreline by Friday, December 14, 2018.

One in four children in Shoreline Schools are considered homeless and/or food insecure.

For over 35 years the Shoreline PTA Council and the Shoreline Fire Department and their partners Hopelink, Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park, the City of Shoreline, and Dale Turner Family YMCA have come together to put on the Holiday Baskets drive.

Food and gifts will be distributed on Saturday, December 15, 2018 to families who are registered for the event.

Each year has a theme. The 2018-2019 Reflections theme is “Heroes Around Me”

The PTA Council accepts 20 total advancing entries per school. A panel chooses the entries which will be District winners. These are now on display in the Lobby of the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE. The main entrance is in the center of the building, on 1st NE and is open to the public.

Grand Opening for The WORKS at its new home at the Shoreline Center

Thursday, November 8, 2018

at The WORKS grand opening. Photo by Curtis Campbell

There was a lot of love at The WORKS Grand Opening, held in its new space on the evening of November 5th!

To celebrate this milestone event, Shoreline PTA Council hosted Shoreline School Board members, Superintendent Rebecca Miner, Deputy Superintendent Marla Miller, Capital Projects Manager Dan Stevens, Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park, and a bevy of supporters, volunteers, teachers and principals, along with one of the original founders of The WORKS in 2002, Karen Dixon.

Shoreline PTA Council Co-Presidents Silje Sodal and Susie Moore welcomed the crowd and briefly described how The WORKS needed to relocate this past summer from the North City Elementary portables due to the exciting new school construction currently happening in the District.

While a PTA Council task force researched options for relocating, the District 'saved the day' by offering use of a surplus storage space within the Shoreline Center.

From left: Shoreline School District Superintendent Rebecca Miner, Shoreline School Board member Heather Fralick, Shoreline School Board President David Wilson, Former Shoreline Council PTA President Kim Ositis, Shoreline School Board Vice President Michael Jacobs, Chair of The WORKS Jill Steinberg, and Shoreline School Board member Dick Nicholson.

Susie and Silje thanked Supt. Miner and Deputy Supt. Miller for their generous support and creative solution.

Jill Steinberg, Chair of The WORKS, thanked community members for their donations and significant volunteer time, noting that The WORKS wouldn't exist without such strong community support over the years.

She also gave special thanks to the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park which recently provided funds for $1,200 worth of new winter coats, the new rolling divider wall in the store and funds for outdoor signage. Heidi Shepherd of Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park spoke fondly of feeling part of the Shoreline School District family.

Superintendent Miner closed with kind words describing the District’s strong partnership with Shoreline PTA Council, and the celebration concluded with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of The WORKS / Council PTA office. Shoreline School Board President David Wilson had the honor of cutting the ribbon to much applause.

The WORKS is a free clothing resource provided by Shoreline PTA Council and is open on Wednesday evenings for Shoreline School District families from 6:30-8:00pm when school is in session (they will be closed on November 21).

Families in need of clothing assistance who cannot make it to The WORKS on Wednesdays can contact Jill Steinberg at shorelineptaworks@gmail.com or 206-393-4916 to set up a private, confidential appointment.

During the 2017-2018 school year, The WORKS served over 700 students at the Wednesday night store, and this year that number is expected to rise even higher. The store is located at 18560 1st Avenue NE, on the north side of the Shoreline Center.

If you would like to donate to The WORKS, new or gently used shoes and clothing in kid sizes 4T-16 are accepted, along with adult shoes and clothing that is appropriate for high school students.

Items can be dropped off at The WORKS on a Wednesday night between 6:30-8:00pm. Clothing and shoes can also be dropped off at the Shoreline Training and Production Center, the red brick building to the east of The WORKS (with the smoke stack), on Monday-Thursday 9:30-1:00pm. If you need to schedule an alternate drop off time, please contact Jill Steinberg at shorelineptaworks@gmail.com.

Currently at the top of The WORKS’ wishlist are leggings for girls (sizes 4T-16) and winter coats and sneakers in all sizes.

Brookside 5th grade student Elinor Cummings recently received a prestigious honor from the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for her prose poem, "The Last Apple." Elinor's work was awarded a National PTA Reflections Award of Merit in the intermediate division for literature. You can read her award-winning poem HERE.

Elinor is one of only eight intermediate grade range students (grades 3-5) in the nation to earn a National Reflections Award in literature this year.

“We are incredibly proud of Elinor and her amazing achievement,” said Brookside Principal John Simard. “Our school has enjoyed so many of the artistic endeavors of Elinor and her family. This is a well-deserved honor.”

Each year, hundreds of thousands of original student works in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts are submitted to the PTA Reflections Program. This year's theme was "Within Reach."

All of the national award-winning works, including Elinor's, will be recognized at the National PTA Convention and Expo in New Orleans this summer and will be on display at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, DC. this winter. A complete list of the 2018 national award winners can be found HERE.

New (and better) home for The WORKS - and they could use some assistance

Monday, April 30, 2018

The Shoreline PTA Council is proud to announce that The WORKS, a Shoreline PTA Council community resource, will have a new and improved home beginning September 2018.

Yellow area is approximate location.
There will be a dedicated entrance directly
from the North parking lot to the new space.
The WORKS provides free high quality, gently used and new children’s and teen clothing and hygiene products for Shoreline School District families.

The WORKS has been housed in various school district locations for over 20 years, most recently at the former North City Elementary campus.

The Shoreline PTA Council is grateful to the Shoreline School District for their continued support of this precious resource and for graciously donating the expansive new space.

The new location is situated next to the District copy shop inside the Shoreline Center and accessible via the North parking lot near the tennis courts.

The transition to the new location will take place at the end of June/beginning of July and the community’s help is needed.

We are currently looking for the following:
  • Approximately 400 sq. ft. of accessible temporary storage space to be used May - August.
  • An architect who can assist with floor plan schematics as we plan how to arrange The WORKS clothing store, sorting room, storage area, and Council PTA business office into one large space (we currently have three portables).
  • An organization or group who has access to movers and/or moving trucks or might be willing to underwrite the cost of a professional move.

If you are able to assist with any of these needs or for additional information, please contact Jill Steinberg.
