Shoreline PTA Council has started their back to school backpack drive

Monday, July 8, 2024

There are so many kids in need that the Shoreline PTA Council starts collecting items for the back to school event as soon as school is out in June. Even families that are doing ok can find it a real stretch to outfit one or more kids for school.

But you can help to make sure that all kids are back-to-school-ready.

If you’re able to contribute, here are three ways you can help.
  1. Donate backpacks in person to:
    • Shoreline Public Schools Foundation
    • @ Shoreline Center
    • 18560 1st Ave. NE, Shoreline, WA 98155
  2. Purchase backpacks from this Amazon wish list for delivery to Shoreline Public Schools Foundation
  3. Make a financial contribution to Shoreline Public Schools Foundation

Echo Lake Elementary parent's persistence makes walking to school safer for students

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Photo courtesy Echo Lake Elementary PTA
Sometimes change comes because of a season or a lapse of time. And sometimes change comes because of downright dogged persistence to make something happen.

This week, the City of Shoreline made a big improvement to make Echo Lake a little safer for pedestrians and importantly, students who attend Echo Lake elementary.

Concerned parent, PTA volunteer and all around amazing neighbor Ellen Ackroyd has been working to make this change.

She reached out to the City advocating for the addition of barriers at the corner of Ashworth and 195th where there is no sidewalk or barrier from the heavily traveled street.

And she kept reaching out until the City moved into action.

Her persistence resulted in the city erecting permanent safety lane delineators to separate the pedestrian walkway from the busy intersection of Ashworth and 195th.

It will no doubt improve safety at this corner and is an example of what an active community member can help accomplish. Thank you, Ellen!

Meridian Park parents want traffic safety on 175th; “Every child should be able to walk and bike to school without fear”

Sunday, May 5, 2024

Meridian Park students and parents cross 175th street

By Oliver Moffat

On school days, Everton Drakes walks with his daughters to Meridian Park elementary - his older daughter rides a scooter while his little one rides along in a push car.

The ride to school requires crossing both Meridian Ave and 175th street, an intersection littered with car crash debris and plagued by traffic jams and speeders.

Drakes and a cohort of parents from the Meridian Park PTSA want the city to pay more attention to safety near Shoreline schools and are trying to build support for automated traffic enforcement cameras near the school.

“Every child should be able to walk and bike to school without fear of the intersection near their school. These are children. It’s not fair to them,” said Drakes.

A screenshot from photoenforced.com shows the location of traffic cameras
in cities neighboring Shoreline

While neighboring cities including Lynnwood, Lake Forest Park, and Seattle have long embraced the use of traffic cameras, the Shoreline city council has opposed their adoption.

Recent changes to state law expanded where cities can deploy cameras and allows city employees to review tickets where previously a police officers needed to review each ticket.

The law requires cities complete an equity analysis to prove traffic cameras will not disproportionately target historically over-policed neighborhoods.

To discourage cities from using traffic cameras as a long term source of revenue, after three years, the city has to share revenue with the state.

The city is actively working on improvements to the 175th street starting with the intersection of 175th and Meridian Ave.

The city wants to widen 175th on the west side of I-5 to make room for pedestrians and bicyclists which could cost over $88 million and require chopping down 274 trees.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, a road diet on the east side of I-5 would shrink 175th from four lanes to three while adding bike lanes and could cost an estimated $2.3 million (without removing trees).

The city council will discuss the 175th street project again at the June 3rd city council meeting.

The city council will discuss traffic enforcement cameras at the June 10th meeting.

Recycled glass art at Echo Lake Elementary

Spring is here and flowers are blooming including the new art installation at Echo Lake Elementary at  19345 Wallingford Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133.

This year's PTA Family Art Night used recycled bottles and materials to create this colorful new piece to decorate the fence off of 193rd that surrounds the Native Plant Garden.

Fence near 193rd

The kids (and parents) had fun painting the outside of bottles that were later heated which created the curled petal effect. It’s always a joy to watch families and friends be creative side by side and then ohhhh and ahh over other people’s work.

The collaborative nature helps bring the school community together and shows how while one flower might be pretty, together they are amazing.

The PTA Council is grateful to be able to support our staff and educators with this new grant program and hopes to continue it for many years to come.

This Council supports the local unit PTAs within the Shoreline School District by providing information, training, resources and opportunities to network with each other, giving them the tools to be successful child advocacy organizations.

The Mental Health Committee started a couple years ago out of the need to support student and family mental health in the Shoreline School District.

The committee goals are to educate, advocate and support each other for better mental health outcomes. Success will look like students, staff and families talking openly about their mental health and knowing where to find help.

The committee’s work has been recognized for its outstanding community leadership and service of education by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) and as a nominee for Outstanding Human Service Program by North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA).
