Shoreline Cooperative Preschool has a new home at Shoreline Free Methodist

Saturday, August 26, 2017

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool has a new home
at the Shoreline Free Methodist Church

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool has found a new home at the Shoreline Free Methodist Church.

The preschool had been renting surplus classroom space from the Shoreline School District for over 30 years. Recent growth in Shoreline has filled elementary schools to capacity, resulting in several local preschools needing to relocate.

Shoreline Coop is grateful that the School District offered to rent them rooms at the Shoreline Center for one additional year (2016-2017), which allowed them sufficient time to locate and secure their new home.

Shoreline Free Methodist Church has been immensely welcoming and supportive as Shoreline Coop worked with the City of Shoreline on permitting and requirements in order to remodel the classroom space to bring it up to code to accommodate a new use of space in their building.

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool invites the community to their Open House Wednesday, August 30 from 2:00 - 6:00pm. The church is at the corner of 5th NE and NE 175th, 510 NE 175th St, Shoreline 98155.

Shoreline Coop currently has openings in their Inventors class (4-5 years old), which meets three afternoons a week and their Adventurers class (1.5-2.5 years old) which meets one morning per week.

Check their website for more details about these classes and to register.

Update: Shoreline Cooperative Preschool still looking for a location

Thursday, June 30, 2016

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool finds temporary home at Shoreline Center - preschool not able to secure lease agreement at a Scottish Rite building

The Shoreline Cooperative Preschool, one of three non-profit, affordable preschools that was located in the North City Elementary School, is still looking for a permanent location. The preschool had planned to move to the Scottish Rite building, but an agreement could not be reached. The preschool was able to find a temporary location at the Shoreline Center for only one year. They are very hopeful that with the community's support, a new space can be found within the next year.

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool would like to thank the Shoreline School District, the City of Shoreline, the Shoreline City Council, Council of Neighborhoods, and the Shoreline Community College for their continued support in the school's quest to find a new location.

Information about potential locations for the preschools can be sent to Director Jessica Gesinger and Co-Director Kyrie Cataldo.

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool has been in existence for 50 years, and for the last 40 years the school has been affiliated with Shoreline Community College. Shoreline Cooperative Preschool offers low-cost, developmentally appropriate preschool for children from 1-5 years old and college level education classes for their parents or guardians.

North City preschools find new homes

Tuesday, June 28, 2016

North City Elementary

By Diane Hettrick

For several years, the former North City Elementary School, a closed school belonging to the Shoreline School District, has been a rental property.

It has been the home to four private preschools.

This last year, the preschools were informed that the school district was reclaiming the use of the property and they would need to find new locations for the next school year.

Originally their last day was scheduled for June 1 to accommodate construction schedules - but when the preschools pointed out to the school district that they needed time to get ready to move after the end of classes, the district extended the date to August 31. They were also offered transition space in the Shoreline Center while they looked for a permanent home.

Two schools took that option and are actively looking for space, and two found permanent homes.

North City Preschool, part of Shoreline Community College, will be housed at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Shoreline.

Director Cathy Childs sent this statement:

"North City Cooperative Preschool is pleased to announce we have secured a new location for our program that has been thriving in the area for the past 50 years. Currently located at the North City Elementary Building, we will be moving to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church located at 14514 20th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155, and will be open for classes this coming Fall, September 2016.

"NCCP would like to thank the many members in our community who reached out and offered ideas, possible solutions and support along the way during the arduous task of finding our new home. This included concerned private individuals, as well as members from the Shoreline City Council, Lake Forest Park City Council, King County Council, Shoreline Community College and Shoreline School District.

"Most of all we would like to thank the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Community, including Pastor Pam Russell, for not only recognizing the strength and mission of our program, but opening their doors to us, and allowing us to use a beautiful space that we look forward to calling home.

"We also want to give a special thanks to the other SCC Cooperative Preschools and all our members who have worked so hard to help us preserve our programs so that we may continue to serve children and families, while building strong communities in the greater Shoreline area.

ShoreNorth preschool, also a SCC school, will move to Seattle Lord of Glory Church’s education building on Forest Park Dr NE in Shoreline. Their statement:

"After 40 years of renting from Shoreline School District, Shorenorth Cooperative Preschool began in 1972, along with her other sister co ops were told that the District has no more room for them anymore. We have worked tirelessly since October to find a new landlord and the search is finally over! Seattle Lord of Glory church (19931 Forest Park Dr NE in Shoreline) has a quiet education building that they use on Sundays that they are willing to lease to us M-F. It is a small but the outdoor environment promises to be transformed (with a little bit of elbow grease) into a delightful place where children can explore. The church leadership is focused on family and excited about us filling the space with families, education and community! They generously have offered to let us use their fellowship hall on scheduled community events / parent education nights. We look forward to serving Shoreline in Early Learning for children 0-5 years and we thank the City of Shoreline for their responsiveness."

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool is the third SCC preschool at North City. A lease arrangement they were working on did not finalize, so they are still looking for space. (See article)

Tessera Arts Preschool is a private school with a focus on the arts. They opened in 1998 and have been leasing from the Shoreline School District since then.

Linda Jones from Tessera reports that "The district has generously offered space at the Shoreline Center for another year, and Tessera Arts will locate there while looking for a permanent space."

Preschools have until July 1 to vacate North City Elementary building

Friday, December 18, 2015

The Shoreline School District has confirmed that an agreement has been reached to extend the date for three Shoreline Community College co-op preschools to vacate the North City Elementary school building.

The preschools - North City, Shorenorth, and Shoreline Cooperative, have been housed at the former North City Elementary School, which was closed by the Shoreline School District in 2006-07 due to low enrollment at the time.

See previous article.

Enrollment is climbing in the District, classrooms are crowded, and the North City building will be reopened as a district elementary school. The preschools were given notice that their leases would end.

The move-out date had originally been set at June 1, based on construction schedules. The preschools protested that the June 1 date falls the day after the preschools close for the summer. The tight timeline would have made it impossible to finish the year in place, said preschool parents and staff, without shortening the spring quarter class schedules.

They now have an additional month - to July 1.

The preschools face a more serious dilemma in finding local space. There are very limited options due to today’s strong real-estate market combined with a mission to keep program tuition affordable for families.

Officials say each preschool is looking for approximately 2,000 square feet of space if they move to separate locations, or about 6,000 or more square feet altogether if they move to a single shared location.

Information on possible new sites to lease and other recommendations or offers of assistance should be directed to North City Cooperative Preschool or SCC Parent Education Coordinator Pollie McCloskey.

Shoreline preschools seek community help to find new locations

Thursday, December 10, 2015

The former North City Elementary currently houses three cooperative preschools
under the Shoreline Community College umbrella:
North City, Shorenorth and Shoreline Cooperative.

For more than 50 years, three early childhood education programs in Shoreline have been helping children and families grow, but now it is the growing number of families enrolling children in the Shoreline School District that is forcing those programs from their home and perhaps out of existence.

The three cooperative preschools are North City, Shorenorth, and Shoreline Cooperative. Currently, they are all housed at the former North City Elementary School, which was closed by the Shoreline School District in 2006-07 due to low enrollment at the time.

The preschools are three out of seven that are operated across north King County as joint efforts of Shoreline Community College and individual 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, one for each preschool.

The three preschools now housed at North City Elementary have been operating in the Shoreline area for more than 50 years. Under the umbrella of Shoreline Community College, the preschools provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Instructors at each preschool are Shoreline Community College faculty. Parents of children in the programs are Shoreline Community College students and earn college credit through the Parenting Education Program.

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool

For the past 40 years, the preschools have leased various spaces from the Shoreline School District, most recently at North City Elementary.

However, earlier this fall the programs were informed that, due to the district’s growing number of families and enrollments, the district anticipates needing the space now leased to the preschools starting in the 2016-17 school year.

The district also anticipates needing space at the former Aldercrest Elementary School, and it has notified tenants in both buildings that their leases will be terminated on June 1, 2016.

Parents and staff at the preschools say they see the growing number of families and students in the area because attendance at the preschools is at an all-time high, too. However, understanding the need for K-12 classroom space isn’t making dealing with the lease terminations for the preschools any easier.

Staff and parents for the cooperative preschools are actively seeking new homes for these three programs.

What they’re finding, however, are very limited options due to today’s strong real-estate market combined with a mission to keep program tuition affordable for families.

In addition, the June 1 date in the district’s notice to vacate the property falls the day after the preschools close for the summer. The tight timeline makes impossible to finish the year in place, say preschool parents and staff, without shortening the spring quarter class schedules.

To help keep the preschools alive and serving Shoreline families and their children next fall, preschool officials are seeking assistance from the community in locating a new home or homes for the three programs.

Froggy Holler preschool uses nature
as a classroom
Froggy Holler’s preschool kids have been having a blast this Fall exploring the woods at Hamlin Park!

They have gotten to see the summer foliage change and the leaves drop. Mushrooms start to sprout and the creatures living in the woods are beginning to prepare for winter. Seeing these things happen before their eyes is an incredible experience for a child!

Froggy Holler is a year-round outdoor preschool run through the City of Shoreline Parks and Recreation Department. This unique program connects children directly with nature giving them a chance to prepare for school through learning activities focused on the environment.

For Froggy Holler kids, the woods are a magical place allowing their imaginations to run wild while they play in the woods and explore the earth and all its many inhabitants.

Froggy Holler runs through November and then starts back up again in January. For more information, call 206-801-2600.
