Inclusive preschool mixes children with typical and delayed development

Sunday, May 18, 2014

Ready for preschool
The Shoreline School District has developed a new Inclusive Preschool Program at the Shoreline Children's Center for the 2014-2015 school year.

Applications are now being accepted for next fall for Pre-K students who will be 4 years old by August 31, 2014. Ideally, this class will consist of 18-20 students with a mix of about half typically developing and half developmentally delayed.

This rich learning environment is a great way for children to learn about individual differences and build leadership skills. The program is child centered and benefits both students who are typically developing and those who are developmentally delayed.

The curriculum begins with developmentally appropriate practices, incorporating specially planned, structured interventions and procedures designed to address children and their needs. The students identified with special needs demonstrate delays in one or more of the following areas: speech and language, cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, socialization, adaptive, and/or behavior / social / emotional growth.

This class will be team taught by a district special education certificated preschool teacher and a Shoreline Children’s Center preschool teacher. With a para educator, there will be three staff working with the class at all times. The ratio of students to staff will start at only 6:1.

The class will run on the Shoreline Children’s Center calendar on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1:00-4:00pm and costs $205 a month. Additional before and after care can be arranged with the Shoreline Children’s Center. Contact the Shoreline Children’s Center at 393-4256 if you are interested in enrolling your child in this unique opportunity.

Richmond Beach pre-school adding afternoon classes

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Kangaroos, lambs, doves and lions are living in harmony every morning at a Richmond Beach pre-school and kindergarten. Starting this fall, they can also learn and have fun in the afternoons.

First Lutheran Preschool and Kindergarten is adding afternoon classes from 1 to 3:30pm for children ages 3 and 4 and from 1 to 4 for pre-kindergarten from the day after Labor Day through the second week of June.

Parents of preschoolers are invited to take a tour now and spend a day with their children to enroll for fall classes.Tours are Mondays through Thursdays from 9am to 4pm.

Kangaroos must turn 2 between March 1 and September 1 and a Kangaroo parent is required to attend school with their child. Lambs are between 2 and 3 years old and classes are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Doves must be 3 by August 31 and Lions must be 4 by that date. Children who are 5 by the start of the school year are enrolled for the five-day kindergarten program.

Teacher Nancy Malek of Shoreline describes the curriculum as “play-based as a first time away from parents with an emphasis on self-esteem and safety.”

In addition to preparing children for first grade, the school features faith-based learning and has an all-female staff of 10 teachers, a director and an assistant. It is accredited through the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and all faiths, races, are welcome. The program has been underway since 1972 and boasts low staff turnover.

“Our goal is to prepare the children for kindergarten or first grade … socially and educationally with a school routine,” explains Karen Beasley, pre-school director.

Beasley further explained that each child enjoys daily fresh air play time with a myriad of playground of equipment and tricycles and there is a focus on nutrition, physical fitness, personal hygiene and independence. Curriculum focuses on developmentally appropriate large and small motor skills with add-on enrichment classes in music, movement,  cooking, science and Spanish. Creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and an awareness of the five senses also are a strong part of the curriculum.

The school is located at 18354 8th Avenue NW, Shoreline. To schedule a tour, call 206-546-0320 or email.  More information at the church website.

Shoreline Winter Solstice Family Lantern Walk

Monday, December 16, 2013

Winding Willow School, a new Shoreline preschool, is hosting a Winter Solstice celebration for young children and their able bodied families, on December 20, 2013 in Aureole Lopez Shulman’s home, at 4pm for warm cider and snacks.

The singing lantern-lit procession will commence at 4:30pm and be done by 5:30. Bring a lantern or flashlight and come bundled up. This is a magical holiday tradition that lights up the darkest time of year with community and song.

Check Facebook for last minute announcements about weather or questions. We will also be posting short videos with the songs and lyrics we’ll be singing. The walking route has a short steep hill and a grassy meadow. Please RSVP on Facebook or call Aureole at 206-909-1110 so we have enough cider. The address is 900 NE 147th St, Shoreline 98155.

Although families are welcome to see the indoor space on this day, this is not an Open House and the school program will not be presented. This is a family and child centered holiday celebration.

In traditional Waldorf schools there is an annual autumn lantern walk. It has some beautiful songs that many remember for their whole lives. In school the children make colorful lanterns using tissue paper and beautiful leaves. When the dark descends, the children, from preschool the early elementary grades, meet with their families around a campfire. Once everyone has arrived and tasted some cider, all the lanterns are carefully lit, or switched on. A procession is formed and the singing commences as the crowd ventures out into the dark. After a short walk through the trees and neighborhood, they gather together in some beautiful meadow or clearing for a few more songs. Then everyone heads home with magic and song in their hearts.

Winding Willow School is a Waldorf inspired early learning environment with programs for  Kindergarten, Preschool and Parent Child. The Winding Willow School curriculum is play based and Spanish bilingual.

Shoreline Community College helps mark 75 years of parenting education in state

Monday, November 25, 2013

By Jim Hills

Shoreline Community College helped celebrate the 75th anniversary of parenting education in Washington during Parenting Education Week as proclaimed by Gov. Jay Inslee.

Parent and child Co-op preschools get parents involved in their child’s education.

“Parenting engagement is a core component of our state’s quality early learning programs,” said Dr. Bette Hyde, Washington State Department of Early Learning director. “Children are born learning, so it’s critical to help parents access parenting education and information.”

Parenting education is a vital part of the college, providing parents and care-givers valuable resources over the past 46 years.

Shoreline Community College’s Parenting Education Program is under the direction of Barbara Yasui. Currently there are seven parent cooperative preschools affiliated with the college. With locations in Shoreline, Bothell, Kirkland, and Woodinville, these preschools serve more than 400 families a year.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., was a parent in one of the college-supported co-op preschools and then went on to become a parent instructor and preschool director on campus. Murray got her start in politics by lobbying legislators in Olympia about possible cuts to the Parent Ed program.

State Rep. Ruth Kagi, D-Lake Forest Park, was a preschool parent in the Lake Forest Park (now Bothell) preschool, and has long been a strong supporter of early childhood and parenting education.

Extensive research shows the first five years of life greatly influence one’s eventual self-concept, ability to trust and relate to others, healthy brain development, and success in school. Parents who learn about child development, family relationships, safety, and nutrition help their children have better success rates in elementary and middle school.

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool

In Washington, 840,845 households include one or more family members under age 18, according to the U.S. Census. Here are just a few reasons nearly 11,000 parents/caregivers participated in parenting education classes and programs statewide last year:
  • Information and resources: Parenting education courses provide parents with new knowledge and skills emphasizing the latest research and best practices in the field. Parents and caregivers can ask questions in a safe setting. They can explore and choose appropriate methods that work for their family situation or stage of their child’s life.
  • Confidence: Whether parenting a newborn, adopted child, blended family, adolescent or teen, parenting classes help participants become more confident caregivers. With a variety of tools and solutions at their disposal, parents are able to better manage new circumstances and every day challenges of raising healthy children.
  • Friendship: The opportunity to socialize, support, and problem-solve with other parents can help combat the isolation and loneliness of parenting.

Parenting education classes aren’t limited to parents of infants and toddlers, but also include classes for single parents, teen fathers, blended families, grandparents as primary caregivers, high-risk (recovery, divorce, teen parents) families, and more.
