How to choose a preschool? ParentMap will help at event on Wednesday, Jan 12, 5:30-7:30 pm

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Parents of pre-schoolers have a dizzying prospect trying to choose a preschool for their children. There are many options and philosophies about what is best for the little ones.

ParentMap has organized a free and fun event at Shoreline Community College on January 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm to help parents by bringing together 12 different preschool organizations. Bring the kids - Annie's Nannies will provide an hour of free child care while you check your options.

In making your choice among a wide variety of offerings, ParentMap offers some tips:

1. Look for a program that fits your child.
You know him best. What's his personality like? Is he outgoing and friendly? Is she a self- starter who likes to do projects on her own?

2. Make sure the program jells with your own views.
Do you want religious content? Maybe you want your child exposed to early academics. On the other hand, maybe you feel kids should spend those early years learning through play. Preschools vary in philosophy and focus; find out which ones match yours.

3. Find out how kids spend the day.
Do they work on computers? Take lots of field trips?

4. Visit a variety of preschools.
Do the kids look engaged and happy? Are the teachers enthusiastic and interactive? Teaching should be intentional - there should be a plan. Make sure the facilities are safe and well-maintained.

5. Find out about teacher-child ratios and whether the school is accredited by NAEYC.
And make sure the teachers are well-qualified.

Features of the event:
  • Child care from Annie's Nannies
  • Kids will be able to play games, do puzzles and color while their parents have time to visit the different providers.
  • Springfree Trampolines will be present. Parents and/or kids can take a jump on the safest trampoline in the world.
  • Attendees can enter to win great prizes with the grand prize being an overnight package for two at Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort just outside of Leavenworth.
Participating preschools:
  • Fairview Christian School
  • King's Schools
  • North Seattle Catholic Schools
  • Nurturing Knowledge
  • Our Beginning
  • Seattle Waldorf School
  • Shoreline Community College Parent Education Program
  • St. Luke School
  • Tara's Tots, Inc.
  • The Early Learning and Development Center

Northshore Fire Foundation donates helmets to Kenmore Head Start

Saturday, November 6, 2010

The Northshore Fire Foundation donated bicycle helmets to 19 happy children at the Kenmore Elementary Head Start classroom on Wednesday, November 3.

Two Northshore Fire Department firefighters visited the classroom to make sure the helmets were properly fitted.

“The kids were so excited to have the firefighters here to fit their helmets and tell them how important it is to always wear a helmet when they ride their bikes,” said Melissa Bloor, Head Start teacher. “We are grateful for the Northshore Fire Foundation’s generous donation.”

The Northshore Fire Department has donated helmets to the Head Start children since 2005. This year the Foundation offered to make the donation. The Foundation is a group of professional firefighters that serve the communities of Kenmore and Lake Forest Park.

They formed a non-profit foundation to further their drive in helping those in need in the local community in ways they could not while performing their normal work functions. Through other established charities, the Northshore Fire Foundation seeks out families they can sponsor during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season for food and gifts. They participate in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program, and also use their resources to raise awareness or funds for other charities, such as the NW Burn Foundation.
