Power still out for a few at midnight Tuesday

Monday, December 26, 2022

Outages at midnight 12-27-22
After the wind blast that took down branches and trees and power all over the county 7am Monday, December 26, 2022, Seattle City Light is down to 49 active events and 298 customers in all of King county.

My yard is covered with branches again. Only a few will require a chainsaw; most are small enough to be picked up and stuffed in the compost bin - which fortunately was emptied sometime last week.

I think I'll wait until after the next windstorm. (See the most recent WeatherWatcher article).

Seattle City Light 12/1 12 PM UPDATE: Crews are working hard to quickly and safely reduce the number of customers without power.  Restoration times may vary based on individual outages as we remove obstacles such as branches, trees, and other obstructions before making necessary repairs.

The new map is not specific as to number of outages
but it gives you an idea of where the problem areas are.

Seattle City Light: Estimated Restoration Times

City Light crews went around and surveyed the damage. They immediately responded where they could, such as replacing a unit torn off a house when the branch brought down a line. Other jobs, such as an entire street of downed lines, were marked for the bigger crews. Photo by Diane Hettrick.

Last night’s wet snow and winds caused outages for many of our customers. We know being without power is a big deal, and we have crews working as quickly and safely as they can. Unfortunately, right now, due to dynamic conditions, providing accurate estimates is a challenge.

An estimated time of restoration (ETOR) is first generated at the time of the outage. As this is manually updated when more information is known about cause and repairs, the ETOR is most reliable when the status of the outage is “Dispatched,” meaning a crew has been assigned. During large scale events with multiple individual outages (hundreds in this case), our crews and staff are focused on restoration and may not have information available or the capacity to update the ETOR for each event. Please be aware restoration times are estimates and each restoration will vary based on the unique circumstances of the individual outage, so it could take less or more time than the ETOR.

We’re sorry for the uncertainty and inconvenience. We’ll keep working and updating as we know more.

The lights are back on for us but others are still in the dark

Sunday, November 6, 2022

City Light crews at work Saturday morning
As of 10:45pm Saturday, 14 households in Lake Forest Park had the dubious distinction of being one of the last three power outages in King county.

11am Saturday November 5, 2022
This was enormous progress from 12 hours earlier.

At 11am Saturday, November 5, 2022 a thousand households in Lake Forest Park were without power.

3pm and 313 outages
in Lake Forest Park
By 3pm Saturday only one area of Lake Forest Park, with 313 households, remained without power.

City Light said that 'It is a complex repair involving multiple spans of wire and two transformers."

The windstorm and the resulting outages went all the way along Puget Sound.

In King county, Seattle City Light had already resolved a power outage covering 4800 customers in Olympic Hills and Lake City before the lights went out in Lake Forest Park.

In Snohomish County, PUD crews worked almost 24 hours straight to restore power to 60,000 customers.

They were able to call in other PUD crews from Chelan, Grays Harbor PUD, Douglas County PUD, Tacoma Power, Sturgeon Electric, Lewis County, Clark PUD, Benton PUD, and Okanogan PUD to allow the work to continue through to Sunday.

British Columbia reported 60,000 customers without power on Saturday afternoon around Vancouver Island and Vancouver.

South County got the same wind blast

Saturday, November 5, 2022

10:48pm November 4, 2022

South County got the same wind blast we did, with results not quite as bad. The circles show the individual incidents and the number of customers affected. If you are just glancing at the colors, yellow is low numbers, orange medium, and red represents 500 or more.

Snohomish County PUD divides their outage map into squares. If you click on each one it gives the details. In this case they are not trying to estimate when power will be restored.

Wild wind and power outages

Friday, November 4, 2022

10:54pm Friday, November 4, 2022

A wild wind just swept through, knocking down trees and raining branches. Lights are flickering or just out. Lake Forest Park and Shoreline east of the freeway either have no power or are running on generators.

Seattle City Light has listed seven separate power outages north of NE 125th. The one in Seattle took out 4873 customers. In Shoreline / LFP it was 610, 83, 559, 1405, 1008, 1799 households out.

WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse reports a 40mph wind gust at his Northridge station. That's the one that sent my cat running for the basement as the trees threw branches and cones at my roof.

Unusually the wind appears to have skipped west Shoreline.

A tree is down on N 205th at Meridian.

Power outage: This time it was our turn

Tuesday, November 1, 2022

Power outage early Halloween morning

This time I got a screenshot of the outage area. This outage was because of a tree issue. No idea if it was one well-placed branch or an entire tree, but 1,142 households lost power at 2:50am on Monday, October 31, 2022.

It took out the east side of the North City Business District on 15th NE from NE 168th to NE 185th and extended to 25th NE and Lake Forest Park.

The power was still out at 6am. They were planning to have it restored by 9am.

Ok, who's next?

Power outage season

Thursday, October 27, 2022

Well, it's that time again. With heat and drought we had forgotten about wind and rain and falling tree branches.

We have had a lot of power outages this year but they are truly painful in cold weather.

We've had two power outages in three days. The first one was Tuesday October 25, 2022. It apparently started at 6pm east of Aurora Village and kicked out two circuits down the line.

Those close to Aurora Village were in the dark for about an hour and a half. The neighborhoods to the east were out for five hours, with power restored at midnight.

Then on Thursday, October 27, 2022 an outage affecting Shoreline and North Seattle knocked out power to 2600 customers. It was reported just before 8am.

I didn't see the notice until it had been resolved. In the future, I'd be happy if someone would take a screenshot of the outage map and email it to me Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

And all of you in Lake Forest Park with your generators, share your wisdom and send information with your recommendations for generators - types, power sources, companies.

Start time 7:12am. 1717 Shoreline customers. Cause not listed.
Estimated restoration time 11am. October 27, 2022

Thank you Katie for sending in the power out map screenshot! It was a huge part of Shoreline and all on the west side of Aurora. And all apparently from the same unnamed cause.

Power restored to all of Shoreline

Sunday, August 14, 2022

By Diane Hettrick

Well, that was fun.

Power has been restored to all of Shoreline.

Power has been restored to all customers affected by the recent outage in the Shoreline area. The cause of the outage was equipment failure. Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue.
Now you have to reset a few things. In my house it's the clocks on the microwave, stove, and coffee pot (I wonder if my coffee finished perking? Must check.)

Power out to 3,940 people in central Shoreline

By Diane Hettrick

At 11:04am the lights went out for 3,940 customers in central Shoreline. The problem appears to be at the power station on Meridian. The outage area goes from 155th to 205th and Aurora to I-5.

Seattle City Light is "investigating" the cause and might never tell us the reason. We are the only power outage in the county, so will be the priority.

Bad news is that the estimated restoration time is 6pm. They always pad the estimates but that still tells me that this is not a good time to open the refrigerator.

For those who are speculating, this is not a planned outage. Seattle Light notifies customers who will be affected by planned outages.

This is a different outage from yesterday's outage in Richmond Beach.

Aurora Village and the Aurora Village Transit Center have power.

23 still without power in Woodway

Monday, June 27, 2022

23 homes without power in Woodway per SnoCo PUD
I'm coming late to this story, so I don't know if Woodway was the primary outage today, but it seems possible.

When your light flicker or go off and come back on, it generally means a problem somewhere up or down the line.

The off and on scenario usually means that your normal power line has been interrupted and a secondary line has taken over (redundancy).

The flicker / off-on reports were coming from Shoreline neighbors on the west side - Richmond Beach, and Innis Arden and Woodway in Snohomish county. I thought I had it narrowed down when someone from the east side chimed in.

Anyway, Sno County PUD reports 23 homes without power in Woodway at 11:59pm Sunday, June 26, 2022.

Tree takes out power pole and lines in Lake Forest Park - road closure and power outage

Wednesday, May 25, 2022

Tree and pole over roadway in 4900 block of NE 193rd in Lake Forest Park.
Photo courtesy Lake Forest Park Police Department

At 3:45pm on Tuesday May 24, 2022 Lake Forest Park Police Department sent out a notice of an Emergency Road Closure.

In the 4900 block of NE 193rd St there are trees, power poles and power lines down. The roadway will be shut down for at least several hours while Seattle City Light and Public Works crews clear the roadway. Please avoid the area and use alternate routes. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Power outage as a result of the tree taking down the pole and lines.

The photo shows the damage to pole and lines. At midnight, power had not been restored to the area.

At 12:30am Wednesday, power had been restored to all but six households. No information was available about why the tree fell.

At 3:15pm the lights went out in Lake Forest Park

Wednesday, May 18, 2022

Lake Forest Park had no power most of Wednesday
By Diane Hettrick

It wasn't exactly a surprise that the lights went out. The windstorm had been predicted (see WeatherWatcher article). Seattle City Light had already dealt with a 4,500 household outage in Broadview that started at 1pm.

By 2pm crews had found the offending tree branch and turned the lights back on in Broadview. But there were more branches and several power outages impacting customers in both north and south Seattle.

Shoreline was the quiet part. Although there were wind gusts of 35mph at Carl's Richmond Beach weather station and Town and Country Market recorded a gust of 40mph power stayed on in Shoreline.

Not so in Lake Forest Park. At 3:15pm almost all of Lake Forest Park's lost power, joining areas all over King county.

City Light crews were out all day
By 4pm power had been restored to the majority of affected customers in Seward Park and Rainier Beach. Crews continued to address the outages in the Lake Forest Park and Eastlake/Montlake areas.

An hour later, power had been restored to the majority of affected customers in Eastlake and Montlake.  Lake Forest Park and Ravenna/View Ridge were still without power.

Two hours on, crews continued to chip away at the dozens of outage events due to windy conditions. More than 8,000 customers had had their power restored at this time.

Soon after most Lake Forest Park residents finally had their power restored.

At 10:30pm it was down to one area around Forest Park Drive with 109 homes.

Power outage to 3888 Shoreline homes Thursday afternoon - 627 without power until midnight

Friday, March 18, 2022

3,888 households lost power Thursday

The power went out to 3,888 Shoreline homes at 1:15pm Thursday afternoon, right down the central portion of Shoreline, after a private construction crew damaged an underground cable.

After an hour, power restored to 2,900 customers
927 were still without power

By 2:30pm power had been restored to over 2,900+ customers. At 7pm City Light crews continued repairs. At this point they had assessed all the damage and estimated it would be six hours to complete the repairs and get everyone back online.

They originally estimated restoration at 6:30am but revised the estimated restoration time at 12:35am Friday. At midnight 627 homes were without power.

At 12:25am Friday, all power had been restored in Shoreline.
