Power outages Monday night

Monday, February 28, 2022

254 households without power at 11pm Monday

Trees are causing problems in and near Shoreline Monday evening. A tree is blamed for a large power outage in Seattle, directly south of N 145th and The Highlands.

The transformer explosion was so loud that many in the Westminster Triangle were startled by the boom!

36 households without power at 11pm Monday

Another outage, possibly a tree, took out power lines between Sunset School Park and Innis Arden.

Northshore Fire: Be prepared for power outages

Saturday, December 11, 2021

Photo by Qasim Malick on Unsplash
Power outages can cause a number of safety concerns; being prepared and having the right information can help.

There are steps you can take before a power outage occurs, such as registering life-sustaining and medical equipment with your utility company.

Make sure your disaster preparedness kit contains light sticks, flashlights, a battery-powered radio with extra batteries and a wind-up clock.

Always have a safe alternative heat source and supply of fuel. Never burn charcoal or use a generator indoors.

During a power outage turn off lights and electrical appliances except for the refrigerator and freezer.

Even if it is dark, turn light switches and buttons on lamps or appliances to the “off” position, leaving just one lamp on so that you will know when power is restored.

Never use gas ovens, gas ranges, barbecues or portable or propane heaters for indoor heating—they use oxygen and create carbon monoxide that can cause suffocation.

Avoid candles since they can cause a fire. It's far better to use battery-operated flashlights or glow sticks for lighting.

Fallen tree puts a thousand Shoreline and LFP residents in the dark

North City 12:20am December 11, 2021

In spite of the storm and wind warnings, North City and Lake Forest Park have the only power outage in the City Light territory. More than a thousand customers have lost power in what is reported as one incident.

Estimated restoration is 4am on Saturday.

Power outage Sunday morning for residents in north Shoreline

Monday, November 15, 2021

Outage area

Several hundred residents in north Shoreline had the distinction of being almost the only power outage in the entire City Light coverage area on Sunday morning.

Power went out at 8:15am between Aurora Village and I-5 along the northern border of Shoreline. The outage took out the traffic signal at 1st NE and SR 104 and possibly Meridian and SR 104.

The cause was said to be a power line down at 200th and Meridian.

Power was restored for all but one household at 12:15pm. One other outage each in Richmond Beach next to Woodway and Lake Forest Park.

Several hundred people were without power in West Seattle, as well.

Any suggestions for brewing coffee when the power is out?

Wind, rain, power outages and a tornado warning

Wednesday, November 10, 2021

Power outages at noon Tuesday
By Diane Hettrick

Tuesday, November 9, 2021 was a pretty wild day, weather-wise.

For me it started by being jolted awake by a big wind gust that shook the house, with trees pelting my roof with cones that sounded like bricks.

Groggily I wandered around the house, wondering where the safest place would be if trees fell and sent spears through my roof.

The cat had wisely bolted for the basement.

I decided that nowhere was safe and went back to bed. I was awakened at least twice more before I gave up and got out of bed.

Carl Dinse told me that his Richmond Beach weather station measured wind gusts of 32mph, and it was probably 40mph in the tree tops of central Shoreline.

Tornado warning sent to a
few hundred thousand people
Just after noon a tornado cell formed over the Kitsap Peninsula and was picked up by Doppler radar.

This information was automatically fed into the Emergency Alert System and immediately sent out to a few hundred thousand people, warning that a tornado was possible and to seek shelter immediately in a basement.

At 12:30pm or 12:15pm depending on which service your alerts come from, the warning was cancelled as the cell had dissipated.

The warning was actually supposed to go only to Kitsap county residents. The Northwest Weather Service (NWS) is trying to find the glitch in the system.

The rest of the afternoon was a rotation of heavy rain, then completely overcast skies, then brilliant sunshine. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Puddles were forming on streets. A few basements were flooding, which probably won't work for protection from tornados.

If you have standing water on the street or flooded basements in Shoreline, you may want to report it through the See-Click-Fix app which allows you to send photos.

The tornado warning was supposed to go only to Kitsap county residents

Lake Forest Park has a system to report problems to Public Works here. Take a photo in case you are contacted for more information.

I can hardly wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Wind related power outages Thursday

Thursday, November 4, 2021

Thursday at 6:15pm

Wind gusts of 30mph Thursday afternoon, November 4, 2021 dropped branches on power lines and knocked out power.

At 6:15pm there were three outages. It's possible there were more earlier that have already been reconnected. There were verbal reports of outages in Hillwood which are not reflected on the map.

Strong winds are expected on Saturday with gusts possibly up to 45mph.

Sunday's windstorm: A tree with perfect aim

Thursday, October 28, 2021

Art Enyedy sent this photo series of a tree that cut power to a large area of NE Shoreline and blocked traffic for most of a day.

Following is his report:

The tree fell Sunday afternoon, October 24, 2020 at about 3pm. NE 175th street east of 20th Pl NE was closed the rest of Sunday. The tree was removed sometime in the night.

Monday morning, power was restored at about 7:30am, but then went out again about 1:30pm.

Finally, power, cable, internet and phone lines came back up at 9pm on Monday evening.

The tall tree, standing on the south side of NE 175th, fell directly across the road. Fortunately, it hit no vehicles. Nor did it hit any of the houses on the north side of the street, and it missed a boat parked nearby.

The trunk of the tree managed to land in the driveway.

City Light is down to its last eight outages for its entire service area

City Light territory outages
5:30am 10-26-21
It's almost all over.

City Light has only eight outages from Lake Forest Park to Burien, representing 23 customers.

Unfortunately, we still have two of them. One over by Aldercrest Elementary School and one in Lake Forest Park near Kenmore on NE 187th (is that the Goat Trail?).

They should all be cleared within a couple of hours.

In PSE territory, Kenmore still has several hundred people by Swamp Creek Park and a couple others.

The lights are back on in Woodway.

2am Tuesday - power almost restored

Tuesday, October 26, 2021 2am

City Light has restored all but a handful of outages. A new one was reported at CRISTA in the Hillwood neighborhood of Shoreline with 30 outages reported. The others are from 1 - 3 households.

They think they'll be done by 8am today, Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

And the next storm looks like it will miss us.

Seems like our wind and power outage events are normally toward the end of November. Remember the Thanksgiving Day storm while the turkeys were half cooked in the ovens? And the year that the big craft fair left the LFP Elementary PTA in the dark? And the year the Senior Center Holiday Bazaar was held by lantern light?

Ah the good old days.

Of course November is still to come.

New power outage knocks out 1000 households

Monday, October 25, 2021

Last updated at 5:50pm Monday 10/25/21

City Light managed to take care of all the big power outages. All but two of the locations in Shoreline - Lake Forest Park are individual outages with 1-10 households.

One in Shoreline near Ronald Methodist lists 61 households.

However there is a new one, first reported at 1pm on Monday with a thousand households without power. It is between 15th NE and 33rd Ave NE to the west and east and NE 185th and 168th north and south.

They haven't updated the estimated restoration times, many of which have passed.

Schools were able to open today.

Power restored for many but others remain without power

Monday morning 4:30am

Crews worked through the night - and are still working and the picture looks a lot better than Sunday. However, Monday morning at 4:30am, there are still many power outages.

The red dots no longer mean a thousand households dark. Now many of them are single households. There's large cluster in Lake Forest Park (see the pink splotch?) with 114 households. They are supposed to be back on by 2pm.

In Shoreline a cluster of 630 homes should have power by 11am. The Highlands won't be back online until Wednesday morning.

All in all, City Light crews have made remarkable progress, particularly considering how many poles had to be replaced.

Trees down - stay away from power lines - remember the rule about four way stops

Sunday, October 24, 2021

One of the downed trees in Shoreline

There are a lot of trees down - this is just one of them. They do make good photo ops but stay far away from power lines. Remember that electricity can travel through the ground and broken power lines spark and whip around.

Also - if you are on the road, remember that when the signals are out you have to treat the intersection as a 4-way stop. You don't get to just keep going through the intersection.

Widespread power outages as winds gust through the area

3:26pm Sunday October 24, 2021

If you still have power, you are fortunate.

But that may change. Weatherwatcher Carl Dinse says that it should be windy off and on until Monday night.

And some trees come down after the wind has passed.

Lake Forest Park had a preview Saturday with an outage that affected Town Center (at least) and caused Third Place Commons to cancel their music event.

3:45pm October 24, 2021

A closer look shows that central Shoreline and west LFP have pretty much been spared but almost all of Shoreline west of Aurora is out - thousands of customers.

Lake Forest Park is in worse condition. Generally the fewer the red dots the faster the restoration will be - depending on how stretched the crews are. The small number of dots in Shoreline means that each dot generally represents a main power line. A lot of customer lose power at once, but the repair also restores a lot of customers.

In Lake Forest Park, all those dots generally represent individual outages - multiple trees and branches taking out 1 to 40 to 70 to 150 customers. And all have to be repaired individually.

Kenmore - PSE outages 4:22pm

It isn't just us, of course. There are outages all over Puget Sound. Kenmore is served by PSE - Puget Sound Energy. PSE has 53,000 customers out, most east of Lake Sammamish.

North Seattle isn't doing to well either. The two largest areas represent over 6,000 customers

The entire Seattle City Light region has outages. 85 outages affecting 43,666 customers.

Bring out the flashlights and extra blankets. It's going to be a long night.

About 350 households are without power in the Town of Woodway, including City Hall.

Downed power lines trap two in vehicle Thursday

Saturday, October 23, 2021

Multiple power lines came down during winds

Shoreline Fire was dispatched at 3:25pm on Thursday, October 21, 2021 to power lines which landed on a vehicle trapping the two occupants.

They were extracted safely and suffered no injuries.

25th Ave NE was blocked from multiple power poles down between NE 177th and NE 178th NE. Seattle City Light responded.

Power was out in the area for some time.

Apparently a tree fell on the lines during the wind / rain weather event. Not exactly the "bomb cyclone" being touted by some, but bad enough for those without power or cable.

Power outage on Serpentine

Monday, September 27, 2021

Thanks to a skinny, ivy covered tree, there is a very localized power outage around Serpentine near the Shoreline Library. Reported at 6pm, it affects 53 households and is expected to be repaired by 10pm

The tree fell and took down a power line. Since it's the only outage in the entire system, it's being repaired immediately and should be back in service long before the posted time of 10pm.

In the meantime, safety conscious and resourceful neighbors borrowed some of the light rail project signs to warn drivers about the tree and wires in the road.

UPDATE: The lights came back on at 10:50pm.

Power outages due to equipment failure

Monday, June 28, 2021

147 at Town Center 175th and Aurora
Power to be restored by 2pm
Cause: investigating

Just before midnight Sunday, June 27, 2021, Shoreline / Lake Forest Park had four widely separated power outages.

Four households in Hillwood
Power to be restored by 11am
Equipment failure

Two of them were identified as equipment failure and it's a pretty safe guess that was the issue with the other locations as well.

19 in Horizon View in LFP to be restored by 6am - equipment failure
4 on 47th NE near Ballinger Way to be restored by 7:30am - investigating cause

Will continue to monitor this situation through the night and update.

Photos: Here's why the power was out in LFP Tuesday

Friday, June 4, 2021

If you look closely, you can see the wire stretched under the tree.
Photo courtesy Lake Forest Park police

Thanks to the Lake Forest Park police, we now know that the reason for Tuesday's power outage was a downed tree.

The tree hit the wires and took down the pole, which cut power to 175 households in the immediate area. Seattle City Light had a replacement pole and wires back up within a couple of hours - record time.

And there's the pole.

Here's the area that was affected.

Power outage in Lake Forest Park

Wednesday, June 2, 2021

Lake Forest Park experienced a power outage Tuesday afternoon, June 1, 2021.

It was limited in area and affected 175 households.

A transformer blew - which, if you have never experienced it, is very very loud and startling.

Power was restored within a few hours.

Midnight update on power outage

Monday, February 22, 2021

Power outage at midnight

There are advantages to being the only place in the county with power outages. There's no delay in getting crews to your outage area.

One of the original outages in northwest Seattle is still out. 250 people can expect power by 3am.

The 175th area power is fully restored. One household a few blocks south is still out.

Echo Lake is down to two households.

Five households near Ballinger are still out.

89 in Lake Forest Park are waiting for the downed tree to be cleared. Power will be back by 2:45am

Wind blowing, branches and trees fall, transformers blowing, and power going out

Sunday, February 21, 2021

And how's your evening?

First a tree came down and took out power to 150 homes just south of 175th. There was another large outage in the area just south of 145th and The Highlands.

Now the map has more outages popping up. It includes an area of Lake Forest Park that I just drove through when all the lights were on.

The street is covered with small tufts of greenery.

Carl Dinse says his Shoreline weather station in Richmond Beach registered a 45mph wind gust.

And the evening is young.
