Thunder, lightning, and power outages

Sunday, August 16, 2020

10:45pm 8-16-2020  Shoreline has a thunder cell sitting right over the top of us. It just produced a very loud and startling boom that was heard all over the region.

However some homes on Densmore had a lightning strike in the earlier thunder around 5pm. 10 households are without power and not expected to have it restored until midnight.

Fortunately the temperature has dropped a bit. Weatherwatcher Carl Dinse reports that some areas of Shoreline got up to 102º today - 97º near the water. He says it's the hottest day since July 29, 2009.

City Light shows a handful of outages all over its service area but they are isolated. Some show one location and the biggest shows 86. So far the earlier one is the only one in north King county.

North Seattle power outage Monday affects 17,000 households

Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Seattle City Light crews responded to an outage affecting approximately 17,000 customers in North Seattle around 4pm on Monday, July 27, 2020.

The outage map also went out of service but was restored after a half hour.

The neighborhoods of Sand Point, View Ridge, Wedgwood, Ravenna, Maple Leaf, Roosevelt and the University District were affected, with no power for about two hours on a 90 degree day.

By 6pm all but 92 customers had power restored.

The outage was caused by failed equipment at the North Substation on 97th. Crews were able to identify the issue and make repairs on scene.

The outage map now shows only 3-4 outages in widely spread areas of south Seattle.

Monday and Wednesday power outages caused by trees

Thursday, October 10, 2019

Monday
Not a good week for trees and power lines.

On Monday, October 7, 2019 tree branches came down on N 200th between Wallingford and Ashworth.

It took out power lines, blew a transformer and turned off the power for 236 households across the northern edge of Shoreline.

It was resolved within an hour.

Wednesday
On Wednesday, October 9, 2019 another tree took out power to 2352 households, primarily in Lake Forest Park.

Another large outage area just south of Jackson Park Golf Course took out power to traffic signals on 15th NE as well as to households.
Wednesday

All were resolved by 7pm the same day.

Tree brought down power lines
Google
Sometime before 10am on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 a tree (or just large branches) fell on power lines in Lake Forest Park, bringing them down and interrupting power to local residents.

Westbound Route 331 to Shoreline was rerouted in Lake Forest Park due to the downed power lines on NE 190th St near 32nd Av NE just north of Ballinger Way.

City Light was able to repair the lines and restore service without much delay.

Power outage in LFP during Seahawks game

Sunday, September 15, 2019

600 households in LFP lost power
for most of the day Sunday
By Diane Hettrick

The sound of transformers blowing was drowned out by the screams of football fans in Lake Forest Park when the power went out in the middle of a Seahawks game.

City Light reports that the power went out at 10:49am Sunday, affecting 4300 customers - all in the Shoreline - LFP area.

At 5pm there were still 600 households without power - all in Lake Forest Park.

Around 4pm there were two City Light trucks and half a dozen workers at 35th and Ballinger, across from the Local 104. There was a lot of tree debris on the roadway.

They finally got everything restored at 5:03pm.

Not sure what you can do about the game but I'll bet that diehard sports fans will be able to figure it out.

The last power outage in Shoreline

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

As of Monday afternoon, City Light crews and teams had restored power to approximately 7,000 customers with about 180 customers remaining without power.

As of 1:45am on Tuesday, September 10, 2019, Seattle City Light had restored power to all but three locations - and one of those was in Shoreline.

One household in Innis Arden had the dubious distinction of being the last place in Shoreline without power.

Seattle City tweeted:
While last weekend’s storm was extraordinary, it quickly created widespread outages across our service territory. We have had 10-15 crews working at a time nonstop since Saturday night.
The unusual lightning storm damaged a large number of transformers throughout our service territory, and getting to each one has resulted in a longer than normal restoration time for some folks. By early Monday morning, our teams had replaced 115 transformers.

At least three of those transformers were in Shoreline.

According to WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse in his article about the storm::

For the entire region the National Weather Service counted about 2,171 cloud to ground lightning strikes, averaging about 7-8 lightning strikes per minute. 224 of those strikes in King County and 449 of those strikes to our north in Snohomish County.

Power outages remain after 24 hours

Power outages in Shoreline after 24 hours
9-8-2019
Some Shoreline residents are facing another night without power after the damage from Saturday's electrical storm.

All were supposed to be restored by 10pm Sunday but they are still out. These delays seem to be true across the whole system.

City Light tweeted:
Due to the large number of scattered outages throughout our service territory and the amount of equipment that needs to be replaced, restoration time may take longer than usual.
All of our crews are working hard to restore power.
Thank you for your patience.

Blame the crow

Crow's wingspread
By Diane Hettrick

Around 2pm on Thursday, June 13, 2019, households in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park experienced a brief power outage.

It was enough to make the lights flicker. In some cases the power was fully out but for only for a few seconds.

Comcast cable services were disrupted. Some people's cable boxes spontaneously reset themselves, while others continued to have problems for a while.

Some people heard an explosion. Others heard a strange whipping noise from the power lines.

Julie Atwood and her husband got a close up view.

We were outside at the time and whatever it was was VERY powerful - the telephone pole was shaking back and forth and the wires actually touched each other, causing some really scary noises.

Shaila Austria, in Richmond Highlands, actually witnessed the cause.

The bang and power outage can be attributed to a crow (RIP) landing on the lines right in front of our house at 185th and 1st Ave NW. The power lines moved like crazy.

I checked with Scott Thomson at Seattle City Light. Could a crow really cause all that noise and activity? His response:

If a bird lands on a single power line, it doesn’t cause a problem. There is more resistance in the bird's body than the wire so the electricity continues to flow down the wire. Problems happen when a bird touches a wire and something else that creates a shorter path for the electricity to get home, like a second wire.

At that point, the electricity uses the bird as a short circuit. If that touch was short – say an wing touched a second wire and the surge of electricity knocks the bird clear of the wire, a customer might see a flicker. The release of that energy would make noise and that scenario could make the wire move.

So the crow did it. And it doesn't appear that he survived the experience.

As for the flickering, except for a few blocks at the very end of the City Light power "tree" - mostly in Lake Forest Park - everyone has what is called either "redundancy" or "self-healing lines". This means that you have alternate power sources. When one goes, after a very brief pause the other takes over.

And if you are still having trouble with your Comcast cable, call their automated system at 877-824-2288.

North end power outages at 5:40pm 2-12-19

It's never a good sign when City Light gives estimated restoration times in dates instead of hours.

There's an unfortunate number of customers on this map whose power is not expected to be restored until tomorrow 2-13-19. And a fairly large number whose estimated time still reads at 11am today.

It may be that the crews have not called in and the map is not current. For the sake of our neighbors, let's hope that's the case.

This map shows all the way to Maple Leaf, south of Northgate because there didn't seem to be a logical stopping point at our city boundaries.

The overall number of customer outages for the entire City Light area has actually gone up. I suspect that melting snow chunks are hitting and bringing down branches on the power lines. The specific number of incidents is 106 affecting from 1 to 90 customers each.

Check on your neighbors. If you go to the Seattle City Light System Status you can enlarge the map to see specific properties.

Power outages down to 4253 customers

2-12-19 10:33am

Power outages in the Seattle City Light territory of King county are down to 4253 from over 32,000 customers.

Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and most of the territory north of the Ship Canal are mostly down to 1-2 per incident. The worst areas are still east of I-5 in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

In the meantime, the snow is melting and residential roads will be slushy ice instead of solid ice.

Carl's Shoreline Weather stations are back online showing temperatures of 34.2 in Northridge and 35.2 in Richmond Beach.  http://www.shorelineweather.com/

UPDATES: Majority of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park without power

Monday, February 11, 2019

Seattle City Light now reports 36,560 customers without power. The majority of the power outages  is Lake Forest Park and Shoreline. Heavy wet snow with intermittent mixed rain showers has put a lot of weight on trees and structures. Use extreme caution if you must be outside around trees or flat roofed structures.

Power outages in the Ballinger Neighborhood

Ballinger hit the jackpot this evening and will be rewarded with a cold night.

The outage on the county line was caused by a tree coming down on the line and blowing the transformer. Another of those spectacular booms and flames shooting into the sky.

The other two outages on the map were caused by a car taking down a utility pole. Anyone able to take a photo out their window?

Power is not expected to be restored before early morning.

Only 12 customers without power

Power outages 10:24 pm 2-4-19

Shoreline and Lake Forest Park are down to one power outage with 12 customers. City Light estimates power will be restored by midnight.

This is on 8th NW and NW 203rd, where a tree came down, hit the lines and blew out the transformer.

Those always take longer to get back online. They have to turn off the power, get crews out to remove the tree, then repair the lines. It very often involves bringing in a new utility pole.

Transformers are very dramatic when they blow. The explosion sounds like a bomb has been dropped.

Very often there will be flames from the top of the transformer.

If you don't know what it is - and even if you do - it can definitely raise your heart rate.

Seattle City Light making major progress in restoring power to Shoreline / LFP

Power outages at 1pm 2-4-19

City Light really has a handle on the local power outages. For a while, it looked like they were playing Whack-a-mole. Most of the outages I reported Sunday night were restored - only to have more areas in the vicinity go down.

Briarcrest had an outage Monday morning around 5am which was repaired by around 6am.

The 1pm map primarily has areas with 1- 20 customers. The Richmond Highlands area is the biggest outage with 550 customers. 80 in Hillwood, and 90 in Lake Forest Park.
