12,000 City Light customers without power - and half of them are here

Power outages 9:16am 2-4-19

Update 10:37am A reader reports that a tree came down and a transformer blew on 8th NW and 203rd - so you can fill in the gap between Richmond Beach and Hillwood, because it's out too.

While I was writing this article, my lights flickered. When I went back to the outage map, Richmond Beach and Innis Arden had lost power.

Hillwood neighborhood appears to be almost completely in the dark Monday morning, along with a large portion of Richmond Highlands along Aurora. Each is reporting over a thousand customers without power.

Richmond Beach and Innis Arden have lost power.

The area of Echo Lake between the lake itself and Meridian is out.

Look at the outages near Twin Ponds - there's a major east-west connection there which is out.

Lake Forest Park north of Ballinger is dark. This area rarely goes dark.

Most of the smaller areas are about 80 customers.

Don't be tempted to go out unless you have to. This weather system covers Puget Sound and a lot of western Washington.

Power outage in central Shoreline Sunday night

All clear by 11:15pm
Readers were reporting power outages in the North City, Richmond Highlands and Echo Lake neighborhoods between 9pm and 11pm on Sunday evening, February 3, 2019.

Some areas lost power altogether and some had off and on episodes. By the time I checked the power outage map at 11:15 it was clear, so I am assuming that all power was restored.

If not, let me know!

Tree and pole went down in windstorm

Sunday, January 6, 2019

As Carl Dinse mentioned in his WeatherWatcher article, Shoreline / LFP got off easy in yesterday's windstorm.

Any power outages we had were very short-lived. Reader Todd Hymas reported that around 9am on Sunday a tree came down and took a utility pole with it across Dayton Ave N. and N 183rd.

The street was closed while repairs were made.

Metro Transit reports at 2:45pm that buses were being rerouted around Dayton Ave N and N 172nd St.

No power outages showed on the City Light outage map at 3pm.

At 10pm three households on NW 204th were without power.

At midnight, City Light still had 2100 households without power - and 3 of them were in Shoreline - none in Lake Forest Park.

An additional 4 were north of the Ship Canal. All the rest, as you can see by the map, were in Seattle and south King county.

There are still power outages in the area

Saturday, December 22, 2018

12-22-18 1:10am

There are still people in our area who are without power. According to the City Light map, the outages all occurred on the 20th and 21st.

The one in Lake Forest Park is an equipment failure and they don't list the cause for the others. The exception is an outage in Innis Arden where the cause is "dig up." Anyone know what that is?

Hope everyone gets back online soon!

9:45pm Power being restored rapidly

Thursday, December 20, 2018

Power outage map 9:45pm

City Light has made major progress restoring power today. From 60,000 they are down to less than 500 total customers without power.

In Shoreline / LFP the biggest outage currently is around Shoreline Place (Aurora Square) with 444 outages. The rest are one - six customers, which usually means that trees or limbs took down the line to the house.

Remember to turn off lights and anything else that will come back on when power is restored. It can be a rude wake up at 3am (for example) when lights come on.

12:25pm

City Light, whose territory stretches from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, through Seattle to Burien reports 60 outages affecting 30,523 customers.

Over four thousand of those are in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

The windstorm is expected to last until 7pm.

Photo: this was good for three transformers and a power line

Saturday, December 15, 2018

This is on 8th NE just south of 174th. It took out the electrical line and three transformers just before 6pm on Friday, December 14, 2018.

Thank you to the reader who sent it in.

As of 9pm on Saturday, December 15, 2018, 27 households in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park were still without power. At least one of those houses has a tree lying on the roof, complicating the repairs.

At my house three rather large tree limbs smacked against the house and fence attached to the house. They were, strangely enough, from two different trees but ended up on top of each other. Two of the branches were around 14 feet long. Amazingly, they fell on each side of the power lines and cable attaching to my house, without damage or even a power blink.

It was impressively loud, but not as loud as the transformer in the backyard, which I watched explode.

That's enough excitement for the winter.

Power starting to come back online but a lot of people are still in the dark

Saturday 12-15-18 2am

At 2am Saturday, the power was back on for large areas of Shoreline. Richmond Beach has power, Ballinger is looking better (but still has 181 outages) and many of the other areas are down to small groups, of one to six households.

The Highlands is still in the dark. The worst hit area right now straddles the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park border. The North City Business District has power but everything around it on the east side of 15th NE is having a cold night.

The sirens have finally stopped. I think there were a lot of accidents with the traffic signals down.

4-way stop People! 4-way stop.

I heard of one bad accident on N 205th in front of Holyrood that happened just after the power outage, but there were sirens for hours afterwards.

Hope everyone is alright.

There goes Richmond Beach

Friday, December 14, 2018

City Light 6:40pm

So now all of Richmond Beach is in the dark. So far only Innis Arden has escaped power outages along the Sound.

All those outages in a nice straight line along N 165th are counted in with the Richmond Beach outages. Must be where the power line runs to supply Richmond Beach.

I suspect there will be more red on the map, although it's supposed to be electronic reporting. The next wind gust might bring down more branches. I still have power but my roof is being pelted with fir cones.

Power outages: branches and transformer

City Light 6:30pm

So the transformer took out the big area just east of I-5, don't know what's happening in The Highlands and the rest look like individual events due to branches or maybe a whole tree.

Left to right the number of households without power (not counting The Highlands) are 74, 6, 68,24, and 4.

Remember: when a traffic signal is out the intersection is to be treated as a 4-way stop.

Crews will be busy tonight.

Power out in The Highlands

City Light 6:20pm

The power is out in The Highlands. I don't think I've ever seen a power outage there before. They probably have underground wiring.

I hope no one is trying to drive there - half of their roads run along ravines.

My lights keep flickering. That either means that my power will be going out -- or that someone downstead  has just lost power.

Stay tuned.

Power outage 6pm

City Light 6pm

It may be a long night.

Above is the power outage map from City Light.

However, a transformer on NE 205th very close to the freeway just blew - always loud and spectacular - and it's dark at the Nile golf course. I thought that power line led to Lake Forest Park - do you have lights down there? How about Ballinger Village?

Just before that our neighbor's tree dropped a couple of largish branches - I may not have to buy a Christmas tree.

The wind didn't seem that strong here. My wind chimes were tinkling prettily - not banging against the house as they do in a strong wind.

I'll keep an eye on things - as long as I have power.

A handful of homes still without power on Monday morning

Monday, February 19, 2018

2-19-18 10:15am

Thirteen homes at the crash site on 25th spent the night without power. City Light estimates that power will be restored by 4:30pm.

A handful of other, widespread, locations in Shoreline and north Seattle still have problems. No estimated time for restoration on those.

If you are not on the map and you do not have power, contact the City Light outage hotline 206-684-7400. City Light is currently working in Shoreline, installing the new Smart Meters. Smart Meters will instantly report outages and it will no longer be necessary to call them in.

Widespread power outages on west side

Sunday, February 18, 2018

In addition to the major outage because of a power pole down on 25th NE, large areas west of the freeway are without power, from the county line all the way down to Northgate.

One area just south of The Highlands has been out since around 3:30pm. All of the rest went down around 7pm.

No cause listed, just "investigating". City Light estimates it will be 1 or 2am before power is restored.

So far, the area of Shoreline where the Shoreline Area News operates has power.

UPDATE:  All but a couple of westside customers had power by 10:30pm

Power outage caused by hit and run driver

25th NE, looking south

Reader Jennifer Klock reports that when Ridgecrest and North City lost power around 3:45pm on Sunday, she went looking for the cause and found Ron, a retired LFP police officer, walking up 24th Ave NE (NE 178th St) toward 15th Ave NE. I saw him and asked about the outage. He explained what he had learned and shared photos he took.

A van descending the hill on 25th Ave NE may have hit a power pole and then hit a silver car at the intersection of 25th Ave NE and 24th Ave NE (NE 178th St) before fleeing the area.

Lake Forest Park Police, Shoreline Police, and Fire have responded as there was reportedly a driver trapped in a car under the power lines.

1000 households should have power restored by 9pm

The accident has caused a huge power outage, from 5th to 35th NE and from 165th to 185th. City Light estimates that power will be restored by 9pm Sunday evening.

Winds - lines down on Firlands Way

Sunday, December 17, 2017

Trees, limbs and lines are at risk of coming down with strong wind gusts Sunday night. The fire department advises to stay inside if possible.

Fire reported at 10:30pm that power lines are down at 190th and Firlands Way. Seattle City Light was informed and will respond as soon as possible.

At this point there are no power outages reported on the City Light power outage map, so this may not be a widespread event.

Wind gusts have measured at 32mph at Central Market and 33mph at Shorecrest. Winds of up to 40mph have been predicted overnight, but so far have stayed in the low 30s.

Power outages in LFP

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

10-18-2017  11pm

Trees are starting to cause problems with the power lines, even though it doesn't seem like there is much wind. 127 households are out around 40th Place NE and 30 just east of 25th NE.

City Light doesn't expect to have the power on before 4am, so pile on the blankets.

The candidate forum at Third Place Commons was not affected, but the Scots volleyball game at Mountlake Terrace High School was cancelled when the power went out.

Three separate power outages in LFP Thursday

Friday, June 9, 2017

Tree over power line in LFP

Lake Forest Park hit the Trifecta Thursday afternoon with three separate power outages. It was all the more remarkable because it was a warm, sunny afternoon with no wind or rain. Not only that, it was virtually the only power outage in all the Seattle City Light coverage area.

Scott Thomson, spokesperson for City Light, said, "We had separate events in that area. They were not related.

"One was a tree in the wires. One was a failed J-Box connector on an underground power line. And a third one that we were not able to find a cause for. Sometimes that happens when a branch falls into wires, creating a short circuit, and then the branch gets dislodged and falls to the ground, eliminating the short."

Because these were almost the only outages, crews responded quickly, and had most of the power back on by late evening.
