Progress for most - no power still for others

Monday, March 14, 2016

Seattle City Light power outage map
3:30am Monday

Progress had been made by 3:30am on Monday morning. Ballinger was mostly restored, except for a few customers. Richmond Beach and Innis Arden west of around 12th NW were back online.

But residents of large areas of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park were hoping that their cell phone change would last long enough for the alarm to wake them up in the morning.

KUOW posted a photo of a home in the 19000 block of 33rd Ave NE in Lake Forest Park where wind peeled back the roof.

Classes were canceled for the day at Shorewood High School and Einstein Middle School. Two hour late starts at Parkwood Elementary and Highland Terrace Elementary.

5pm - more outages - but the worst should be past

Seattle City Light outage map at 5pm
10pm - no change to the map

There have been a couple of fierce gusts of wind, but predictions are that the worst should be past by now, at 5pm.  The outage map is worse. That might mean that more trees fell, or perhaps it simply means that previous outages have now been reported and the map updated.

Car over embankment in Edmonds

Looks like all of west Shoreline is on battery power. Ballinger and Lake Forest Park aren't doing too well, either. Go visit friends in Echo Lake or Ridgecrest.

In Edmonds, other than trees down, a car went over an embankment and it took police 45 minutes to extract the driver.

In Seattle, a big tree fell on a car in Seward Park, killing the male driver. A toddler in the back seat had minor injuries but was pulled to safety.

Kruckeberg Gardens had to cancel their Leprechaun Hunt and close the Gardens for the day.

Bridges across Lake Washington were closed because of water over the roadway.

A tree fell on a house in the Hillwood neighborhood of Shoreline, with branches puncturing the roof and coming into the living room like spears.

Central Market is open. They have no power so you will not have access to the refrigerated cases.

A skinny, but very tall tree fell over three lanes of I-405 just north of SR 527, taking 405 to one lane and backing up traffic for miles.

The storm is here

Seattle City Light outages at 3:30pm

I drove from Shoreline to Kirkland at 2:30pm Sunday. The wind didn't seem so bad from inside the house, but it was very dramatic once I stepped outside. The street was already green with small branches and tufts of fir trees and the wind was roaring.

All the traffic lights were out on Ballinger, from Ballinger Village to Town Center. Fortunately, the light at Bothell Way was still functioning. Drivers were remembering to treat the dark intersections as four-way stops, but everyone seemed to be confused by left turn lanes.

I could see whitecaps on Lake Washington - I'm sure it has happened before but I have never seen it in Lake Forest Park. Waves were breaking on the beach at the Civic Club.

On Bothell Way heading into Kenmore, the right lane was blocked by LFP Public Works trucks who were just finishing clean up on the right hand lane. It looked like a tree had fallen on the roadway.

The power outage map looks like a duplicate of last week's storm, with trees down, many calls to City Light, and virtually the same areas without power.

The Seattle Times reports that the ramp on to northbound I-5 at 175th is partially blocked by trees.

Power restored to all but four households

Thursday, March 10, 2016

It has taken all day, but trees and branches have been cleared from power lines and City Light crews have restored service to all but four customers in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park as of 9:30pm Thursday.

The winds died down, as promised, but the damage left behind took hours to clear.

(Did anyone get any photos? Send them!)

Wind and rain - more trees down - massive power outages

Seattle City Light power outage map at noon

More trees have come down on power lines, causing widespread outages for large sections of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

A tree over the tracks delayed the Sound Transit trains from Everett this morning. When the tree was cleared, the winds were high enough that the trains were held. At noon, they were running, but an hour and a half behind schedule.

A high wind advisory is in effect until 4pm this Thursday afternoon, but is expected to die down much sooner.

Power outages, whitecaps, and rainbows

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Tree down by SCC

Wild weather today. High winds moved through and took down a couple of trees and a lot of tree debris. Some people are still without power. The good news is that the north end was the only area affected by outages, so all the City Light crews have been dispatched our way.

Power outages at 6:45 pm 2-1-2016

162 households are out between Greenwood and Westminster Way in Shoreline because of a downed tree and the road is closed on Dayton Ave N between 155th and 160th.

The largest outage is at Northgate with over a thousand customers without power between 5th NE and Lake City Way.

Don't wait, prepare now for winter power outages

Use flashlights, not candles

From the City of Lake Forest Park

As we know from power outages experienced by area residents and businesses during recent wind- and rainstorms, it is important to be prepared for potential interruptions in power service. Reduce the inconvenience by being ready.

Before the storm:
  1. prepare and keep emergency kits handy and include, among other things, a working flashlight, glow-in-the-dark stick lights, a wind-up clock, portable radio, manual can opener, and Mylar blanket;
  2. check out what to do if there is an outage; unplug sensitive electronic equipment, like computers; know which natural gas appliances will continue to operate if there is an electrical outage (natural gas water heaters, gas log fireplaces, gas ovens and ranges);
  3. know where your main power switch is, and know how to safely reset the circuit breaker or replace a fuse.
During the storm:
  • Turn off lights and appliances.
  • Leave one light switch on so you’ll know when your power is back on.
  • Use flashlights as a light source instead of candles.
  • Never use a gas range, indoor cooker, or charcoal or gas barbecue for heating.
  • Keep your freezer and refrigerator doors closed and open them only when necessary.
  • Close curtains and drapes to keep the heat in.
  • Wear warm clothes in layers.
  • If the indoor temperature drops to 55 degrees or below, open your faucets so there is a constant drip to prevent pipes from freezing.
  • During a major storm, have a plan for locating family members in case you are not with them. Call the American Red Cross at 206-322-2345 for more information.
  • Remember that cordless telephones will not work without electricity. Have a corded or cell phone available.

For a few residents on the east side of the City, power is provided by Puget Sound Energy (PSE). Check out PSE’s electric safety and emergency preparedness information.

For most residents of the City of Lake Forest Park, power is provided by Seattle City Light (SCL). For more emergency preparedness tips and information about how SCL restores power, click here.

Driver hits utility pole in Richmond Beach Wednesday

Thursday, November 19, 2015

A 24 year old driver from Seattle hit and knocked down two power poles at NW 195th St and 20th NW in Richmond Beach at 2am on Wednesday morning.

He fled the scene on foot and called UBER for a ride. Officers went to the location he indicated for pick up and found him hiding in the woods. He was arrested for Hit and Run and DUI.

The power outage affected eight customers, who were without power for about eight hours.

Trees take out power at 4-Corners and LFP

Tuesday, November 17, 2015

Seattle City Light reports two current areas of power outages, both attributed to trees taking out power lines.

A large area at 4-Corners on Richmond Beach Road and 3rd NW has taken out power to what appears to be the entire business district and includes Einstein Middle School. It extends south into the Richmond Highlands neighborhood, as well as north into the Hillwood neighborhood.

163 individual customers are affected and the estimated repair time is 3pm.

In Lake Forest Park, an area north of Horizon View park around NE 203 and NE 204 has put 63 customers in the dark. It extends almost to NE 55 / Brier Rd. Estimated repair time is 5pm.

UPDATE: The 4-Corners area was back online by 11:30am. During the day half a dozen individual customers reported outages, including customers along Ballinger Way around the business district. At 11pm only one of those remains.

The LFP outage is down to 54 customers, with no predicted time that power will be restored.

Seattle-King County Public Health: What to do when the lights go out

Monday, November 16, 2015

By Meredith Li-Vollmer
King County Public Health

The forecast calls for high winds and rain through Tuesday night, and that means power outages are likely when trees or their limbs topple. Power outages don’t seem like a big deal until they happen–then they are a pain in the you-know-what at best, and a serious health hazard at their worst.

Who do I call if the power goes out?

Use flashlights, not candles, to prevent house fires.

  • Check your neighborhood to see if others are without power.
  • Call to report the power outage. Call only once to keep the line open for other customers.
Call Seattle City Light Power Outage Hotline at 206-684-7400.

What should I do when I see damaged or downed power lines in my neighborhood?
  • Don’t get near any fallen or sagging power line!
  • Call the utility company about the line. Please do not send email to report outages. Call Customer Service at 206-684-3000. Or, call the Outage Hotline (recorded message) at 206-684-7400.
What about people who are using life support equipment at home?
  • People who depend on electrical equipment to treat a health problem should have a plan in advance of a power outage.
  • In some cases, this may mean purchasing a back-up power supply such as a generator or going to a health care facility that has back-up power.
  • People who use life support equipment should register with the local utility. When they do this, the utility will make them a top priority for power supply repair and restoration.
How should I use a power generator?
  • For your safety, always follow the manufacturer’s instruction on the use of power generators.
  • Since most generators are powered by gasoline and can generate carbon monoxide gas, run them outdoors where the fumes will not cause illness.
  • Power generators should never be plugged into your home’s main electrical panel as this may result in serious injury or death to utility personnel working to restore power. Instead, plug the generator directly into the appliance you wish to use during the outage.
How long will the food in my refrigerator and freezer remain cold enough to prevent food borne illness?
  • Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed to prevent the loss of cold air.
  • A fully loaded refrigerator may keep food fresh for about six hours.
  • A fully loaded freezer may keep food frozen for up to two days.
  • If any food in the refrigerator or freezer is warmer than 41° F, throw it out.
My power has been out for a while and my home is too cold. What are my options?
In a severe emergency or disaster, expect electric power to be out for several days. If that happens, consider relocating to a shelter or to a friend’s home where heat and power are available.
And one more important warning:

Never use charcoal, gas, or propane heaters indoors. Odorless, invisible fumes from charcoal, gas, and propane can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Using these heaters indoors can also increase the risk of fire.

Finally - all the power is on

Thursday, September 3, 2015

By Diane Hettrick

Here's the news: the only power outage in the Seattle City Light service territory - is not in Lake Forest Park!

In fact, only one customer is without power at this writing (8:45pm Friday) and they are in the Northgate neighborhood.

Since we had our November windstorm in August this year, maybe we get to cook our Thanksgiving turkeys without a power outage.

It would be nice if the Holiday bazaars could have lights this year. I remember a big gift show at Lake Forest Park Elementary in the dark. I think that was the same year the power went out right in the middle of turkey cooking.

A couple of years ago the Senior Center had to bring in lanterns for their annual Holiday Craft fair. And this year, the Back to School event, most of which is outside, had to solider on through wind, rain, and no power for the inside events. Kudos to the hairdressers who did 100 hair cuts by flashlight!

Update: the power is on, except...

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

By Diane Hettrick

I heard from the last person to regain their power in Lake Forest Park. She said it took a new power line from the pole to her house, but she had power by noon on Wednesday.

However, there are now ten customers without power as of 9:45pm on Wednesday, from three outages - one in Lake Forest Park and two in Shoreline. I don't know if they were not reported before, if they are new outages, or if they were masked by the big outages areas surrounding them, but City Light is on the job.

City Light reports seven outages affecting 59 customers in all of King County, down from 58,000 after the storm.

Welcome Back - the power is on

Tuesday, September 1, 2015

One poor soul in Lake Forest Park is still without power but the rest of the outage map is clear for Shoreline and LFP. The Cities and residents have picked up the big branches and cut up the fallen trees on the roadways. The entire area is decorated in small bits of greenery, mostly pushed to the side of the road.

No one is looking into your back yard.

Our November weather is back, but no one is complaining because we all hope it moves over the mountains and tamps down the wildfires plaguing the central and eastern parts of the state.

Almost there but homes still without power

9-1-15 8:45am power outage map

Crews are down to the last households in the area without power and expect to have those online today.

My sympathies to those people. My block, along with many individual blocks in Lake Forest Park, used to be the last to go online after storms caused widespread outages. There is nothing quite as depressing as sitting in the dark and cold, with no hot water or ability to cook, while everyone around you is going on about their normal business.

Storm debris container at LFP Tuesday

The City of Lake Forest Park will be bringing in a large container for citizens to drop off storm debris from this past weekend.

The dumpster will be located at City Hall beginning Tuesday September 1st through Sunday September 6th. The hours of operation will be between 9am and 5pm. Republic Services is helping the City with cleanup by supplying the large container for branches that came down during the windstorm.

Please--no garbage, recycling or food scraps can be accepted at this drop-off location.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are in need of volunteers to assist during the operation of the container. If you have a few hours to donate, please contact Ms. Deb Milan at City Hall 206-368-5440.

Storm clean up in Shoreline

The City of Shoreline received approximately 50 calls on Saturday related to the windstorm that hit the area. About a dozen more came in on Sunday and Monday related to tree issues. Seven City staff worked for about 12 hours on Saturday clearing roadways where they could and closing them if downed electrical wires were involved. City crews will not remove trees/vegetation if power lines are down in the area.

Monday, crews from Public Works and Parks began clearing debris from City streets and parks. This work will continue through the week and possibly into next week. Crews will work on the major issues first. They will then move to clearing smaller debris from arterials and eventually move into neighborhoods.

8-31-15 4:45pm Shoreline outages

Most outages impacting large numbers of customers in Shoreline have been addressed by Seattle City Light(SCL); however, there are still a number of smaller outages throughout the city that affect just a few homes here and there that SCL is still addressing. To find out where reported outages are and to see an estimate of power restoration visit SCL’s outage map.

If residents want to report a down City tree that is impacting their property, they should call the Customer Response Team at 206-801-2700.

Residents should contact Seattle City Light at 206-684-3000 for any downed tree or limbs on power lines.

Residents should contact a tree service to address downed private trees.
