Progress is slow in restoring power

Sunday, August 30, 2015

8+30+15 9:15pm

By Diane Hettrick

Progress is painfully slow in fully restoring power to our area. Downed tree and power lines make it challenging for City Light workers, not to mention the sheer number of outages.

Meanwhile, people are throwing away the food in their freezers and refrigerators and trying to find open stores and restaurants. Stores that were open had fairly bare shelves. Gas stations that were open - and many were closed - had long lines and some were taking cash only.

City Light thinks they'll be able to get most power restored by midnight, although one large area in LFP (838 customers) has a 3am estimate.

West Shoreline was not as affected by this storm although there are downed trees. Businesses west of Aurora were reported to be operating normally Sunday - Central Market, Spiro's, the 4-Corners business district, Richmond Beach.

Storm update from City of Shoreline

201st and 30th NE in Shoreline

Sunday storm update from the City of Shoreline:

Two Seattle City Light roads are still closed:

1. 5th Ave NE between 174th – 178th. Northbound is closed. SCL is there working on it

2. Dayton Ave N between Richmond Beach Road – St Luke’s Pl.

City Light still needs to complete repairs at eight locations. Three came in today.

Two new downed tree locations were called in today. Those were cut up and cleared.

There is still considerable debris to be removed from the event.

We received over 55 calls during the event.

Car on NE 188th

Daniel Barrett of Lake Forest Park took this photo, but he has no explanation for it -- and neither do we! The branch is inside the car window, but the window is unbroken. The car doesn't have apparent damage - at least on the outside.

File it under strange storm stories.

LFP Town Center has power

8-30-15 2:45pm outage map

The situation is slowly improving. At the worst, City Light reports 58,000 customers without power - and the majority were in the north end, with the concentration in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.
This update just came in from the City of LFP
Most residences south of Ballinger Way have power now - the Towne Center is open for business.
For residents in the 195th area, they hope to have a crew on that job soon. It will likely take up to 10 hours to complete once they start. Bottom line - it may be up to 24 hours before power is restored. Plan accordingly and take care of each other.

The City reports that Bothell Way is open WB, however EB will be closed for a short time.

Shoreline storm response

Trees in power lines

Shoreline City Manager Debbie Tarry sent this message on Saturday, but because of the cable and power outages, I received it on Sunday.

Crews have identified all locations in City that need response from Seattle City Light. Our crews cannot remove trees/vegetation if there are power line down in the vicinity. As Seattle City Light addresses power line issues City staff will be available to remove vegetation that is preventing access for residents.

Time for power restoration has been lengthening in some areas. We will have a few staff on for a few more hours (Public Works, Parks and CRT) and then some on tomorrow to keep addressing access issues.  Staff will continue to work from the Fire Headquarters that is serving as the coordination site.

Clean-up efforts will start Monday and will likely take several days.

What a mess - trees and branches down everywhere - Lake Forest Park has no power

8-30-15 10am outage map

By Diane Hettrick

City Light crews have made some headway on the power outages. They took care of the large one west of the freeway, but many isolated outages remain.

This updated map shows three large area outages in Lake Forest Park, affecting 1806, 1606, and 1640 customers.

The rest seem to be single outages.

The City of Lake Forest Park managed to post this message:
The August 29th Storm has severed power to Lake Forest park. City Light is working to restore power and should have some customers online by 1pm. However some might be as long as 24-48 hours more. Bothell Way is blocked between Ballinger and 165th.

Power outages 7pm 8-29-15

By Diane Hettrick

I live in one of the tiny, clear spaces on this map in central Shoreline. My Comcast cable went out for a while, but the lights never even flickered, so I had no idea that the outages were so widespread.

This is the most extreme and widespread outage I have seen since I started monitoring outages.

There's another huge section of outages in NE Seattle. Richmond Beach seems to have escaped this time, possibly because they got hit so hard last November.

The unusual thing about this event is there does not seem to be any one big cause, like a tree over a main line. Instead, the outages appear to be mostly one at a time. The largest outage I found on a random search was 30 households.

That means the repairs have to be done one at a time. Some may not be completed until Sunday morning, simply because there are so many that crews have to get to.

There is one large outage in the Richmond Highlands / Hillwood neighborhood with 1944 households. Crews expect to repair that by 10pm Saturday.

And the cause of all this? Trees and branches that fell during our unusual windstorm.

If there are any trees down in your neighborhood - send me a photo.

The reason the traffic was so bad in north Shoreline Monday

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

Thanks to MLT News for answering a question that many were asking on social media

Traffic was snarled and an estimated 35 customers were without power in the Lake Ballinger neighborhood directly north of Shoreline Monday afternoon after a truck-utility pole accident on the Shoreline side of Highway 104.

According to the Washington State Patrol, at 1:47pm Monday the driver of a Freightliner vacuum truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 104 just west of 1st Avenue NE by Ballinger Commons with the truck boom in place. The truck boom struck cable wires, damaging a utility pole and pulling down wires into the westbound travel lanes, the State Patrol said.

The driver of the truck wasn’t injured in the incident, which completely blocked the roadway for several hours and apparently backed up traffic into Shoreline on north-south streets as well.

Snohomish County PUD spokesman Neil Neroutsos said crews were sent to the scene to make needed repairs. “The job should take about five hours, so we’re estimating power will be restored to these customers by 9pm,” he said. “If we can re-route it from another source, power will be restored sooner.”

Power outage by Twin Ponds

Seattle City Light reports that 61 homes in Parkwood were without power on Saturday morning due to an equipment failure.

The outage was reported around 6am. Residents will have to wait until 2pm for electricity to be restored.

A single outage was reported nearby, apparently unrelated to the larger cluster.

Power fully restored to Shoreline after car hits pole

Friday, June 19, 2015

A one-car accident took out a power pole near the Shoreline substation and cut off power to 4443 Shoreline customers.

The accident occurred around 2am. Seattle City Light reports that power was fully restored by 4:54am.

Power restored to Shoreline and Lake Forest Park

Monday, January 19, 2015

All power has been restored to residential customers in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park after the Sunday early morning windstorm.

Several roads were closed in Shoreline due to fallen trees and downed power lines. The City sent out an update Monday that only Bagley Ave N and 186th St. was still closed. All other roads are now open.

If you lost your cable service, apparently whichever company gets their trucks to the street first has priority. In a recent outage with wires pulled down, Comcast restored service within hours and CenturyLink took a couple of days.

Power still out in some areas

Sunday, January 18, 2015

Power outage map 7:30pm

Some areas were still without power at 7:30pm. The larger areas in Lake Forest Park and Kenmore were projected to be online by 10pm, but no estimate was given for the single customers from 3rd NW to 15th NE.

Hope you all found somewhere to stay warm and watch the game - at least the last four minutes of the game.

Lights were out just before kick off at Ballinger Village, but Thriftway was still operating on a cash and check basis. Almost every customer was wearing Seahawk gear.

The City reported a list of road closures at 11:37am because of fallen trees and downed wires:
  • Perkins Way at 20th Ave NE
  • Fremont Ave N, between 178th and 179th
  • 15th Ave NW between 204th and 205th (opened at 8pm)
  • 186th and Bagley Ave N
A Lake Forest Park family had a very large tree land in their back yard, but it managed to miss their house.

Light are back on

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

Looks like Shoreline got lucky. The entire outage area previously reported apparently went back to one problem and when that was resolved, all the lights came back on by 9:30pm.

City Light even restored the two single outages, hours ahead of schedule.

So if the wind has passed, we may get to keep the lights on for the while.

A tree fell on Ballinger

Sunday, November 30, 2014

Tree on power lines at 190th and Ballinger

Here's the tree that caused the problems on Ballinger Way and 190th on Saturday. Besides taking out the power to all the surrounding households, the tree and then the work to repair the lines and restore power meant that bus routes and traffic had to be routed around that section of Ballinger well into the evening hours.

Heather McLaughlin, who took the photo, reports:

According to the SCL website, it originally caused 71 households to be without power, but had gone up to 101 before it was repaired. We walked down to take a look at it and got to meet some of our neighbors. Nothing like a crisis to bring people together. One of the people I spoke with said it happened about 11:45am and that the tree was on fire for a short time after it landed. The fire department was the first to respond to 911 calls and then police to reroute traffic.

The tree has been removed, power restored to all households, and traffic normalized on Ballinger Way. Bus service returned to a normal schedule on Sunday morning.

Power restored to most large areas but many single outages remain

Saturday, November 29, 2014

Saturday 11-29-2014 8:20pm

Most of the large areas have power restored by 8:20pm Saturday, but a large area in Lake Forest Park still remains in the dark, as well as dozens of scattered, individual outages. Crews plan to work into the night to restore power. Many of the estimated repair times are 2am. All the listed reasons are "tree". Apparently a whole tree came down across Ballinger to block at least one lane - note the cluster of outages at the site.

Power outages all over the north end

It didn't seem like the wind was blowing that hard, but there were small green branches down everywhere. It might have been frozen tree limbs on power lines but Richmond Beach and Innis Arden seem to have very little power.

Another very large section is out from about NE 160 to NE 185, from the freeway east into Lake Forest Park, then another large area east of the reservoir in Horizon View.

There are small outages all the way down to Northgate. All together, City Light reports 46 separate outages affecting 6518 households. And it's cold outside.

Outages west of the freeway were apparently reported first because they seem to be the only ones with estimated repair times (9pm).

If you want to keep track of your street, the power outage map is here. Look for the circles with a dot - there is more information, including the cause (when they find out and have time to report it), whether crews have been dispatched, and estimated repair times (remembering that it is only an estimate).

110 foot tree takes out transformer, power and cable lines

Friday, November 28, 2014

Roots stick into the air from the remains
of a 110 foot tree that came down
Wednesday morning and took out power lines.
Correction: neighbors chose to stay out of their homes until the situation seemed more stable.

78 households in the Northridge neighborhood in NE Shoreline were without power from 12:30am Wednesday morning until about 10am Wednesday after a 110 foot tree uprooted itself, knocked down a transformer and stripped lines from three poles. The street was blocked during the night and neighbors closest to the fall chose to stay out of their houses for several hours until the situation stabilized.

According to one neighbor, "We, the neighbors, all huddled in 'safe' spots outside between midnight and 4:00am Wednesday morning, getting to know each other better in the dark."

The transformer exploded when it hit the street, strobing sparks and flames and flooding the street with oil. Power lines and cable lines were strewn across yards and streets.

City Light crews were on the scene within minutes. A crew spent several hours cutting up the fallen tree, then the rest of the night dealing with replacing poles, transformer, and restringing wires. Neighbors report there were a dozen vehicles and two dozen men working 16 hours straight.

Department of Ecology personnel dealt with the spilled oil.

When all was done and power restored, Comcast crews moved in and spent 4-5 hours restringing cable lines on the street and to nearby homes.

Neighbors closest to the transformer fall heard the tree going down and the explosion, but those even a few houses away heard only a "whooosh and a kind of pop" as all the power went off.
