Wayne Pridemore: Lights in the sky but not in the house

Monday, August 19, 2024

Photo by Wayne Pridemore in Richmond Beach

Lots of lightning and thunder over our bedroom deck. This is my favorite kind of photo shoot, the action came to me.

The only problem was that a nearby transformer was hit and we lost power overnight.

Sunday morning Seattle City Light came to the rescue and changed out the transformer and we had electricity with a flip of the switch.

Dramatic storm knocks out power

Sunday, August 18, 2024

48 households in northwest Shoreline without
power at 2am. One each at two locations in LFP.
There are just a few households in Shoreline without power at 2am after the dramatic thunder and lightning storm knocked out power to some parts of City Light's service area.

What happened at your house? Some people report their lights flickering, some had no power interruptions.

I was happy to get my plants watered.

Power outage for 7,500 customers in downtown Seattle and Beacon Hill caused by mylar balloons

Sunday, July 28, 2024

City Light is not the only utility with this problem. This photo is from Burbank Power & Water

Just before 6pm on Sunday, July 28, 2024, City Light reported an outage affecting 7,500 customers in downtown Seattle and Beacon Hill.

An hour later, crews had restored power to about 4,500 of those impacted by this outage.

By 7:30pm power had been restored to the rest of those impacted by this outage.

The outage was caused by mylar balloons that came into contact with the lines.

PLEASE do not let mylar balloons go. If part of your celebration, cut and dispose of them after you're done with them.

Power outage north of UW makes lights blink in Shoreline

Sunday, June 30, 2024

At least I assume that's what made my lights blink. The outage was caused by an equipment failure at 2:05am and that's exactly the time my lights blinked.

I worry about our interconnected power grid.

Anyway, over 2000 City Light customers won't have power until 9am.

Tree took out major power lines at 185th and Ballinger

By Diane Hettrick

Main power lines run along Ballinger Way, so when the tree by 185th snapped and fell on the lines, it took out power to most of the city. LFP City Hall closed and I will presume that most, if not all of Town Center closed.

The tree fell with such force that it snapped the power pole

City Light crews have been working for hours and are currently several hours past when they expected to be done in LFP.

Wires, tree, power pole all tangled together

Most of the original outages have been cleared.

Outages were primarily east of the freeway. Ballinger was completely dark. Ballinger Village was completely closed.

Every other traffic light was dark but fortunately there was very little traffic. The power is back on there now.

I didn't see it personally but it sounds like North City also had major outages. They're back on now.

It's very quiet outside now, at 3am, but there is a possibility of more wind.

I checked in with WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse earlier in the day. He said that he was recording high wind gusts at all his weather stations (from Richmond Beach to central Shoreline to north Everett) and was recording the highest winds he has seen in a year.

Wind gusts of up to 50mph knock out power in Shoreline

Sunday, March 10, 2024

4pm outage map

WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse reports that a line of thunderstorms around 2:40pm created locally gusty winds with a lot of tree damage in the area.

His Richmond Beach weather station recorded a southwest gust of 47mph. Close to 4,000 local customers lost power, with a King county total of 10,000.

Three of the outages are one customer only.

New outages were reported from 6-7pm and occasional wind gusts continued into the early morning hours.

By 12:30am on Sunday, most of the north end outages has been cleared, including the one on the graphic with 30 customers.

86 power outages in King county - and 82 of them are ours

Tree 82 - Equipment failure 1
Power out at 3am
A cluster of outages along 35th NE in Lake Forest Park is said to be caused by a tree.

They were the last reported, at 7:45pm on Sunday.

Estimated restoration time is 5:19am on Monday.

I've been told that 'everyone in Lake Forest Park has a generator' so I'm hoping that applies to this street.

Second power outage took out most of Echo Lake neighborhood for an hour

Sunday, February 25, 2024

2nd power outage takes out Echo Lake neighborhood

About an hour after I published the first outage notice, my power went out, along with my entire Shoreline neighborhood. The large section that looks like it still had power is Holyrood Cemetery.

There's another group of outages, right by the power substation.

4390 customers were out, including the original group of 68 who are dealing with a tree issue. Those always take longer, especially if the lines took down a utility pole.

The estimated restoration time was 10pm, but happily the power was out only about an hour.

They never bother to list the cause after the original notice, but the branches at the back of Holyrood certainly didn't help.

Louisa Reilly was walking her dog when she came across the caution tape on the street behind Holyrood and saw the branches on the ground. She said that by the time she came back around the branches were gone and the City Light truck was driving away.

Corrected: the area which looks like it has power is actually Holyrood Cemetery

Wind and power outages

Power outages February 25, 2024, 2:45pm

So my trees were attacking the house this morning, throwing fir cones at the roof. Amazing how those tiny little cones can sound like bombs when they hit the roof.

However, my power stayed on, which is better than some. I didn't check the outage map before 2:45pm on Sunday, February 25, 2024 so I don't know if it was worse before that time.

At that time, there was one outage in Lake Forest Park with 38 customers without power for an equipment failure. Power went out at 11:30am and will be restored by 10pm - but crews have been dispatched.

A tree or branch took out power to 68 homes between N 160th and N 165th about 1:20pm. Crews have been dispatched and power will be restored by 8pm.

North Seattle had 672 households dark, with estimated restoration time listed at 9pm. No cause listed. The area is south of Jackson Park golf course, centered around N 125th.

Power outages January 9, 2024

Power outages around 1 - 2am

Power outages are sprinkled all over the City Light territory because of the wind. Carl Dinse reported winds of 33mph in Richmond Beach at 11pm.

The map certainly shows the path of the wind. However, I live outside of the path and things were thumping and bumping and the trees were throwing things at my roof.

The cause is listed as tree for just one location but it is safe to say it will be the same for all.

From Puget Sound to Lake Washington, here are the outages on the map

  • 250 - Bitter Lake
  • 54 - tree North Seattle
  • 371 - Parkwood
  • 1- by 145th
  • 1 - North City
  • 90 Lake Forest Park crews dispatched
  • 162 Lake Forest Park crews dispatched

Pinehurst outage at 9:15pm Saturday
Not until midnight do City Light crews expect to have the power back on for the 299 customers in the Pinehurst neighborhood north of Northgate.

This outage is caused by "equipment failure."

The lights are back on for the rest of us in the north end.

In the Dark: power outages after storm

Seattle City Light outages 10:30am Saturday

I don't know how bad it might have been after the wind, which hit here around 3:30am, as predicted (See WeatherWatcher report) but at 10:30am, Seattle City Light reported four outages in LFP / Shoreline and one at Northgate.

  1. LFP a tree in LFP took power out to 313 customers. Dispatched. *8pm
  2. NE Shoreline one customer was out in Ridgecrest, south of the Shoreline library *5pm
  3. NW Shoreline 60 outages in Innis Arden along the Shoreview Park boundary *8pm
  4. N Shoreline one customer in the Westminster Triangle across from Shoreline Place *4pm
Not always, but often a single outage is what's left of a larger outage in the area.

PSE shows no current outages north of Kirkland / Redmond.

*Estimated restoration time.

Down from 16,000 - City Light still dealing with power outages

Thursday, November 2, 2023

2,000 without power in King county at 10pm 11-2-2023

The King County outage map looks bad until you enlarge it. Earlier in the day, City Light reported 16,000 customers without power, most presumably from wind blown branches and trees downing power lines.

At 10pm on Thursday, November 2, 2023, the number was just under 2,000, scattered all over the county.

Echo Lake has 168 without power at 10pm

Shoreline / LFP has just under 200 without power with most being in the Echo Lake Neighborhood.

Police were assisting with traffic control near the intersection of Lake City Way NE/NE 95th ST for wires down in the roadway.

North Seattle power outage resolved

Saturday, May 13, 2023

At 7:30am on Saturday, May 13, 2023 Seattle City Light reported that crews were responding to an outage in North Seattle affecting approximately 4,555 customers.

The cause was under investigation, and an estimated time of restoration was yet to be determined.

At 8:30am random stop lights were out from NE 125th to 155th between 5th Ave NE and 35th Ave NE

But the general outage was partly resolved and crews were working to restore the rest.

9:30am City Light reported that the issue, which was not specified, had been resolved and power was restored.

City Light crews starting to trim branches around power lines

Friday, April 7, 2023

Story and photos by John Boril

A crew from Seattle City Light contractor Kemp West was out along NE Serpentine Place on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 trimming limbs above and around our power lines.

This past winter, falling limbs caused a 48-hour power outage in this neighborhood, during some of the coldest days of the year.

According to City Light’s website, the utility trims trees on a four and a half year pruning cycle.

In addition to outages, City Light says trees touching power lines can also start fires, burn or electrocute people touching the tree, and cause voltage loss in the system.

Tree down on N 192nd between Interurban Trail and Stone Ave

In the early hours of Tuesday, February 21, 2023, 236 households were still without power. The big outages had been repaired and these were the remnants, apparently not related to the bigger outages.

Virtually all of the outages have trees listed as the cause.

One outage was added, east of Aurora at 192nd between the Interurban Trail and Stone Ave N.

A tree came down with enough force that it shattered a utility pole. Police were on scene, diverting traffic.

61 households lost power and repairs are not expected to be complete before 7am.
236 outages remain, over 11 locations

97 in Ridgecrest, 72 in Lake Forest Park, 61 in Echo Lake, and the rest are listed as 1 (although when the power was out in December in half my neighborhood, it was listed as 1 so the numbers may well be higher).

Power is out in west Shoreline

City Light outages 2-20-23

About an hour ago my lights flickered gently and the transformer near my house hummed. The lights didn't go out and the transformer didn't blow, but other parts of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park and north Seattle were not so fortunate.

Close to 6,000 households have no power from City Light; most in Richmond Beach and Innis Arden.

The outage at Bitter Lake was caused by a tree but the rest just say "investigating". City Light is just ballparking the restoration time and setting almost all of the restoration time at 11pm - 12am.

If you don't have a generator keep the refrigerator closed and get out the blankets.

Woodway has power. PSE has outages but the closest affected area is near Redmond.

Neighborhoods near Northgate lost power 1-26-23

A power outage early Thursday morning put almost 6,000 customers in the dark. Cause? "Investigating" - which is the generic reason usually listed.

The outage area was east of I-5 from NE 92nd to NE 125th in Lake City, as well as smaller outages west of I-5 north of 92nd.
