Gallery North in Edmonds announces its January featured exhibit “In With the New" featuring potter Skip Schwartz

Tuesday, January 1, 2019

Four vases by Skip Schwartz
Skip Schwartz was looking for a creative outlet after retiring from the sea as a tugboat captain.

Inspired by a friend’s beautiful work, he began his career by taking pottery classes at Edmonds Community College. He prefers classic shapes with an Asian ascetic.

“I find that my pottery is heavily influenced by the pottery I encountered while sailing around the Pacific Rim,” says Skip.

Over the years he has honed his skills and now in his studio is in Edmonds, WA, he specializes in wheel-thrown pieces, created under the watchful supervision of his cat, Stormy.

In addition to Skip Schwartz’s pottery, all member artists of the gallery were challenged to create something new, which had never been shown at the Gallery North before. Artists will try a new medium, subject, style, or just create a brand new piece. It will be fun to see what they create.

Mugs by Skip Schwartz
Also in the gallery this month, Watercolor artist Pamela Harold, well-known in the Edmonds art community, recently donated several pieces to the gallery before she moved to Canada. Formerly a member of Gallery North, Pamela wanted to give back. The first piece of this collection will be sold by silent auction during the month of January and will benefit the gallery. Come put in your bid to own one of her beautiful pieces of art.

The opening reception for “In With the New" will be held at Gallery North on Saturday, January 5, 2018 from 1pm to 4pm. Meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, enter to win hourly raffle prizes, and shop for art. The artists also will be present at Gallery North during the Edmonds Art Walk on January 17th from 5-8pm. This exhibit will be open for viewing through the month of January.

Gallery North, at 55 years old, is one of the longest running artists’ cooperative galleries in the nation. It continues its mission to promote and sell local art in the heart of beautiful downtown Edmonds. Located at 401 Main Street, Edmonds, Gallery North is open seven days a week. Visit the Galley North website, or contact Gallery North at 425-774-0946.

Sam Scott studio porcelain pottery sale this weekend

Wednesday, November 29, 2017

Shoreline ceramic artist, Sam Scott, will be opening his studio this weekend, Saturday, December 2, 10-4 pm and Sunday, December 3, 12-4 pm.

There will be large selection of wheel-thrown functional and nonfunctional porcelain objects.

The address is: 18502 6th Ave NW Shoreline 98177. Contact Sam at cheerspots@yahoo.com or 206-542-1944.

About Sam
My interest in ceramics began in high school with a pottery class in 1968. I continued taking pottery and art classes throughout the remainder of high school and into college.

After completing two years at Shoreline Community College, and three years at the University of Washington, I graduated in 1975 with my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree. Over the years

I’ve given many workshops and taught at several schools including the University of Washington, Everett Community College, and presently at Shoreline Community College.

About Sam's work
I am primarily a functional potter. I work predominately in porcelain, although not from a traditional perspective.

My forms are defined by functional simplicity and the white surface of each piece is decorated with abstract designs in blues, browns, and grays.

I am also exploring the contrast of the white porcelain surface with a matte black glaze. The development of this glaze has allowed me to explore new forms of decoration on the clay surface.

Ceramic plates by Julie Perrine

The co-op’s current longest-running member and current President, Tina Carpenter, joined the Sculptors Workshop in 1976 after taking too many chemistry classes. She needed some creative art in her life, and that she now certainly has! This year she even taught three classes at the Shaack gallery in Everett. Tina shares, “I enjoy teaching multigenerational classes. I love the group dynamics of the combination of creativity a 5 or 6 year old offers and the patience, talent and wisdom a 65 year old brings to the group.”

Studio members including Barbara Wyatt, Mike O’Day, Mary Ann Tokas/King, Jordana Rene, Julie Perrine, and Terry Sonomore, have had pieces accepted in various local juried art shows, including Edmonds Arts Festival, Mountlake Terrance Tour, and Schaack Arts Center show.
