Hot weather, cold water: the King County Sheriff's Office would like to keep you from drowning

Saturday, August 19, 2023

From King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO)

With recent tragedies involving outdoor water activities, we want to remind you of the importance of water safety.

We reached out to Sergeant Rich Barton of the King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit for the following words of advice to our communities.

Hot weather, cold water. The water in the river is not warming up even though the temperatures are. It may be 90-plus degrees outside, but the rivers can still be below 60. The temperature difference can cause cold water shock and drastic changes in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.

It also can cause a sudden gasp and rapid breathing, which creates a higher risk of drowning regardless of swimming ability. This applies to all waters.

The rivers are down to their extremely low levels right now. This does not mean they are safer. There are still hidden hazards and strong currents. Slippery rocks and uncertain footing can cause a fall or slippage.

Life jackets work, period. If you are a fair swimmer or non-swimmer, use a life jacket or stay out of the water.

Stand-up paddleboards are required to have a life jacket and whistle on the board, not necessarily worn.
  • Do not use the attached leash if using a paddleboard on the river. Leave it off. The leash could get caught around an obstruction and hold the person in a bad situation.
  • If using the paddle board on lakes and the Puget Sound, use the leash.

Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman
Story and photos by Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman with the Lake Forest Park Police Department, smiled and joked as she gave the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park a glimpse of her personal history at their recent meeting.

Raised by her father, she grew up in this region and attended several local schools.

It was after her first child was born that she fulfilled her lifelong dream of attending and graduating from the police academy.

It's heartwarming to know that, near retirement after 30 years of policing, Lt. Lehman has not lost her feminine charm or delightful sense of humor.

In fact, one sees that she has had a strong influence in giving the LFP Force a more personable presence in our community.

Criminals are dealt with in our city but, "Just like a doctor serves the public, so do the police," she affirms. "The citizens of LFP are our customers."

Congratulations on a long and successful career and best wishes Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman! Thanks for sharing with us today - and glad you slipped in that little story about the Chief.

Nearly 300,000 fentanyl pills and other narcotics are out of the hands of a narcotics trafficker thanks to the work of the King County Sheriff’s Office, which recently conducted an operation to stop the dangerous drug from hitting the street.

The amount of fentanyl seized is enough to cause more than 2 million lethal doses and is one of the largest seizures ever for the Sheriff’s Office.

Operation “Jade” took place on Thursday, August 3rd, and was led by the Shoreline Police Special Emphasis Team (SET) and assisted by Precinct 4 SET and Narcotics Detection K9 Quinn.

The operation targeted a narcotics trafficker suspected of distributing large amounts of fentanyl and other substances in the cities of Shoreline, Burien, White Center, and Seattle.

"Amidst significant staffing shortages and various hurdles, Shoreline Police Department has remained committed to keeping our investigative teams intact," said Shoreline Police Chief Kelly Park.
"In this particular case, our dedicated detectives worked swiftly and efficiently to gather essential information. Their collaboration with KCSO's SW Precinct detectives proved invaluable, facilitating the prompt and secure retrieval of these deadly narcotics and firearms.
"The diligent efforts of our investigators seamlessly align with the City of Shoreline Council's goals to promote community safety and foster healthy neighborhoods."

The operation seized:
  • 290,000 M-30/fentanyl pills
  • 9.5 pounds of fentanyl powder
  • 1 pound of cocaine
  • 5.7 pounds of heroin
  • $52,043 in cash
  • 1 stolen firearm (handgun)
“I’m incredibly grateful for the hard work of our Sheriff’s Office in fighting the scourge of fentanyl,” said Executive Dow Constantine. “In this one operation, the Sheriff’s Office stopped enough fentanyl to take the lives of millions of people. King County will not stop in this fight, and we’re working around the clock, through law enforcement, public health, and human services to protect people from this deadly toxin.”

One suspect was booked into King County Jail on a firearms violation and multiple counts of violating the Uniformed Controlled Substances Act – Possession with intent.

Operation Jade was dedicated to and named after retired King County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Detection K9 Jade, who sadly passed away last month, surrounded by her family. Jade dedicated much of her life to protecting the communities of King County and bringing joy to whoever was fortunate enough to interact with her.

“We’re incredibly proud of our dedicated deputies who, through their relentless efforts and investigation, were able to remove a large amount of narcotics from our community,” said King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall.
“Every drug removed from our streets is a potential life saved, and this operation showcases our commitment to enhancing safety for all within our neighborhoods.”

Lake Forest Park receives new Radio System from the Puget Sound Emergency Radio Network (PSERN)

Sunday, July 30, 2023

State of the art radios for
Lake Forest Park
The Lake Forest Park Police Department has received Puget Sound Emergency Radio Network (PSERN) radios for all staff members in the police, public works, and emergency management departments.

This significant development means that every officer now possesses a state-of-the-art radio, and patrol cars have been equipped with new radios as well. The digital system will be fully operational beginning on August 1.

The Puget Sound Emergency Radio Network (PSERN) is an emergency radio system approved by King County voters and utilized for dispatch and communication among various King County agencies, including fire, law enforcement, and more.

Initiated in 2014, the process of replacing our outdated radio system has taken nearly a decade, and we are elated to have finally received our radios.

This cutting-edge radio system operates on a simulcast 800 MHz trunked radio system, employing advanced P25 Phase II digital technology. It utilizes an extensive network of 61 radio sites to transmit signals to over 18,000 portable (hand-held), mobile (vehicle), and control station (desktop) radios, as well as dispatch center consoles within the service area. The PSERN Operator is responsible for the maintenance and operation of this network.

In the past, Lake Forest Park was utilizing portable radios that were over 20 years old and plagued with numerous issues and recurring problems over the years.

Consequently, we are overjoyed to bid farewell to those outdated radios and welcome the new ones. This long-awaited upgrade has been a welcome sight, and we are excited about the positive changes it will bring.

Have you herd this one?

Friday, July 21, 2023

Not local - but too good a story to pass up.

Just when you think you've herd everything.

On July 15, 2023 our King County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a call from a delivery driver stating that he was unable to deliver a package due to a llama standing in the middle of the road and blocking traffic.

King County Deputy Paczosa responded to the location and sure enough, found said llama in the roadway and refusing to move.

Using his de-escalation skills and standing just a tad over spitting distance, Deputy Paczosa was able to sweet talk him into putting on a leash to get him off the roadway.

Soon after, the communications center received another call, this time from someone reporting their llama missing. We were happy to reunite the owner back to their furry friend, and the driver was able to deliver the package, most likely ordered through Llama-zon.
