Lemmings jump into the sea - no, sorry - Polar Bears jump - no, not them - Edmonds residents freeze by the hundreds

Tuesday, January 2, 2024

January 1st, usually the dead of winter, is when normally sane adults remove most of their clothing and plunge into the icy waters of Puget Sound.

Hundreds of Edmonds residents crowded every inch of the beach and lined the breakwater at the Edmonds waterfront, waiting for the signal to plunge into the water.

Once they started to go into the water, the crowd looked even bigger than when they were huddling for warmth on the beach.

It's not true that they were all screaming "omg get me out of here." In fact they appear to be high-fiving and even swimming. Although a few are heading for shore.

The mountains peeked out to see what all the screaming was about but then quickly pulled the covers over their heads and went back to bed.

LFP Rotary Polar Bear Dip raises funds to eradicate polio

The 4th annual Polar Bear Dip on Saturday, January 21, 2023 was a splashing success in Rotary's campaign to eradicate polio!

Undaunted by the snow at 1:00pm, participants and supporters gathered at Sheridan Beach on Lake Washington.

Our thanks to LFP Police Chief Mike Harden, Lt Diego Zanella and the many other handsome officers whose presence added to the significance of the effort.

Eldon’s delicious chicken noodle soup – thanks Eldon! - and Starbucks coffee – thanks Allison! - warmed us as Robin’s heartfelt testimony of giving polio drops in Ethiopia encouraged our generosity in the cause.

With that, the brave - or crazy? - swimmers stripped off their coats (or in Ed Sterner’s case, bathrobe) to reveal shivering bodies who ran eagerly to plunge (or wade cautiously) into the water.

It was reassuring to have the Marine Police there – thank you so much! - in case of a mishap, but we’re thankful none occurred.

Smiles, hoots, and cheers greeted the stalwart polar bears – our heroes of the day! - as they scrambled back to the warmth of a towel and a hug from proud family members.

Even the sun came out to give its blessing. A big thank-you to all who came! You helped make this a successful – and fun! – event. And special thanks to organizer, Robin Roat, and her team who made it possible. See you next January!

Green Lake Polar Plunge Sunday

From the Richmond Beach Runners

8:00 or 8:30am Greenlake Run and Polar Plunge Sunday!

Well, it's a New Year and to keep the tradition, this Sunday morning's run will be meeting at Greenlake.

Meet by the food store and boat rental near the east parking lot.

There are two start times; the 8:00 time is for a two lap run, 8:30 if you would like to sleep in a little more.

The plunge part is optional but highly recommended.

If you do plan on taking the plunge after the run, don't forget the towel and dry clothing!

After the run and plunge, head to Starbucks for some Java and to go over 2016 goals for those who made last year's new year's run - as well as create 2017 goals.

This is truly a great way and fun way to start off the new year. Don't let the thought of the plunge part stop you from coming out.
