Photo: A host of golden daffodils

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
By William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Seven poets gather for group reading in Shoreline

Friday, March 24, 2017

As an art form of language and the distilled essences of the human condition, poetry offers a primary window into the aspirations and sorrows of our times.

In recognition of National Poetry Month in April, the Shoreline Public Art Program welcomes seven poets from around the Puget Sound region (from Bellingham to several islands; from Woodinville to Seattle’s north end) for a night of profound reflection at Darrell’s Tavern, widely recognized for its lively subculture of contemporary music.

Monday, April 3, 2017, 7:00 – 10:00pm will be the first time that Darrell’s has hosted a night of poetry. Darrell’s is located at 18041 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

The seven poets (Roberta Feins, Susan Hawke, Christen Mattix, Britney Schroeder, Woron Ta Tele, Kilam Tel Aviv, Carolyne Wright) range from prize-winning, widely published authors to those who are in the early stages of their literary careers; they represent a diversity of voices from many different backgrounds and literary styles, from formal poetic verse to rap and hip hop.

Each poet will read for approximately 20 minutes; funding is provided by Shoreline’s Public Art Program. The event is free; apologies to those under 21 as Darrell’s is an adults-only tavern.

Poem: Respect

Tuesday, March 7, 2017

“Respect”

Do my attitudes and habits reflect respect?
Or do other’s needs I neglect?

Inside and outside my door am I aware…
I must show that I care!

To other’s needs I must be alert,
If not, I am in danger of acting like a jerk!

Outside my door I must pay attention,
A thoughtless act may cause harmful contention!

I must understand the world is more than me,
I need to practice respect…that’s the key!

As I go about my day,
Respect keeps disregard at bay!

At day’s end did I act with respect…
Or did I act with neglect?

Envoi:
Each day as I arise,
I must engage respect
for the wellbeing of all I meet!

Poem: Without you...

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

Without You

Without you, I’d be lonely and blue
I'd sit in my chair; I'd grumble and stew
No one to laugh with - to giggle and grin
To get into mischief and get out again

No one for planning and dreaming up dreams
Without you around, I’d be lonesome it seems
So glad we are friends…and always will be
The greatest of pals, just you and me

**Happy Valentine's Day, Cynthia Sheridan

Poem: Hand in Hand in Love

Tuesday, January 3, 2017

Hand In Hand In Love

Yesterday I saw love walking,
Hand in hand,
The two of them, side by side, in harmonious pace!

He in a sporting green beret,
She wearing a bright calico scarf!
Yesterday I saw love walking!

Their obvious love displayed acts of shared understanding, valuing, caring and respect,
As they appeared oblivious to the world around them!
Yesterday I saw love walking, hand in hand,
The two of them, side by side, in harmonious pace!

Contentment, joy and happiness are the soul felt rewards of true love!

Poem: Ode to the Cook at Christmas

Ode to the Cook at Christmas

Thank heaven for friends with the gift of cuisine
I’d love to drop by - if you know what I mean
Hooray for the chefs and the bakers and such
I’ve certainly tried but I don’t have the touch
Let’s hear it for cookies, for brownies and pie
Turkey with trimming, great salads – oh my!
Hats off to the cookers … how you have flourished
My wonderful pals that are keeping me nourished
As we gather this season to nosh and to sup
We’re thankful for those who whipped it all up

Civilization Thrives On Love and Dies With Hate

Practicing the arts of loving,
Is about adopting the attitudes and habits of giving and sharing!

Understanding, valuing, caring, love and respect is the way to share
love for one another in our hearts. Those are the foundations upon
which culture and civilization thrives

Love rescues the soul from the pains and ravages of discontent and hate!

Photo Poem: Great Joy and Delight in Flowers

Great Joy and Delight In Flowers
By Robert "Bob" Barta

The intent of this post is to encourage the art of admiring the beauty of flowers as a way to disengage your mind from the stresses of your day.

Take a neighborhood walk and look for their beauty in natural settings or well kept flower beds or commercial displays in your local stores. In addition, natural decorative grasses or trees in blossom provide opportunities to capture and store nature’s beauty on your iPhone or Android or computer hard drive. The sensation of instant joy and delight is always there whenever you need or want it.

As a release from the stress of shopping, pause briefly and gaze at the beauty of flowers on display. I’m confident that you will forget your tired feet and just let your mind enjoy beauty that you may have been passing by because of the debilitating habit of hurry, rush, rush!

The job of flowers is to show off their beauty. Your privilege is to appreciate and be thankful for them fulfilling their purpose.

Great Joy and Delight In Flowers

The joy from flowers is the experience of great delight,
It scares away daunting and threatening fright.
Pause a moment to contemplate their beautiful dress,
Their joyful spirits can help you sweep away any mess.

Joy is watching a garden of flowers in breezy motion,
It’s as soothing as a healing skin lotion.
Joy in nature is all around,
Open your eyes and wear its crown.

A photo of flowers now and then,
Is an invitation to joy on which you can depend!

©2016 by Robert J. Barta-Blooming Bobville the practical poet. Best of luck and always be fresh and blooming with fun and joy.

P.S. Occasionally extend your gazing delight with a purchase of flowers. In addition, a bouquet of flowers is a wonderful way to show appreciation, thankfulness and caring for others you love and respect. You’ll surely add joy and delight to their day. (see previous story)

Poem: Choosing to Live With Joy

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

By Robert J. Barta

“Choosing to Live With Joy”: The intent of this poem is to encourage clearing your mind of harmful thoughts such as anger, fear, grief, hate, jealousy, misery, prejudice, sorrow and other human maladies with some momentary fun recesses during your day. You are encouraged to replace the stresses of change in your life with creative fun and joyful activities that raise your quality of life. Joy leads to happiness! Happiness leads to contentedness. When you are contented life feels good.

“Choosing to Live With Joy”

Day by day you have a choice,
You live by the quality of your conscious and your inner voice,

As time goes by, carefully choose what you mostly do and think,
Every thought and act is an intention, hope or reason for something,

Realize that you have two minds, conscious and unconscious,
Either one can harbor thoughts of misery or thoughts of joy.

What you consciously keep on your mind is what you’ll get,
That is something on which you can bet!

It is best to pay attention to what can bring you joy,
Those are the things that float you like a buoy,

The thoughts that you harbor in your thinking space,
Sets the tempo of your daily pace,

Day by day you have a choice:
You live by the quality of your inner voice!

Tree Peony

In The Garden

Ever in the garden, my soul is given rest

Like a newly feathered chickadee, still swaddled in its nest

All around green cedar trees, with rugged trunks of grey

Hide secrets of the chestnut squirrel that sometimes comes to play

The blurry haze of irises, the bluest kind of sky

And purple painted peonies illuminate the eye

Scarlet headed dahlia, white roses on the gate

Fading now at evening as the warm sun does abate

The lushest scent of rich brown earth – my garden, calm and sweet

Safe harbor from a hectic day, this arboreal retreat

Poem: A Wallaby Runaway

Friday, June 3, 2016

KANGAROO " KAUGHT"
A WALLABY RUNAWAY

Are you a driven "wannabee"
Oh take a look and you will see
We have a Stranger in the Park
He ran away-- oh what a lark

The Officer was on the ball
He promptly answered the owner's call
For Wally yes--he'd run away
But he is safely home today

Officer Gross--oh what a treat
A Runaway who's very Sweet
So if you too decide to roam
Just call the cops to bring you home

PS Bless you -you little kangaroo
The cops-they "got the jump" on you

Flowers Excite the Experience of joy

Flowers bring joy to all in Puget Sound,
Especially in spring, they do abound.

Joy is the experience of great delight,
It scares away daunting and threatening fright.

Pause a moment to contemplate their beautiful dress,
Their joyful spirits can help you sweep away any mess.

Joy is Cheerfulness in motion,
It’s as soothing as a healing skin lotion.

Joy in nature is all around,
Open your eyes and wear its crown.

Flowers naturally understand their responsibility,
To shower you with beauty each day,

Your responsibility is,
To experience, appreciate and be thankful for,
The healing and uplifing quality of their beauty.

Paramount Park Open Space

The Wetland

The color of the soul is twilight
in a wetland thousands of years old
where natural springs percolate
the nectar of life,
and the flour of glacial meltwater
sifts into the marsh bisque.
It has been a long journey
from the headwaters
in the Milky Way.

Golden Bunny you're so cute
We are now in hot pursuit
Those at home do want you back
Please do leave a little track
So they can keep you safe and warm
And guarded well from any harm

Though you do love that nice green grass
And all the Green Things here en masse
To lose you would be oh so tragic
For you bring so much Easter Magic
