Odd Plant show is a prickly delight

Shopping for succulents at the Odd Plant Show

Photos by Wayne Pridemore

The Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society of Washington held its Annual Sale and Show at Sky Nursery in Shoreline on September 14 and 15.

It has been called the "Odd Plant Sale" although they may be trying to mainstream. This photo doesn't help their case.

It takes just the right space for a beauty like this.

There were plants of all sized and shapes. These plants are more living room sized.

Sergii Druzkin and daughters were at the activity table. Dariia is a 2nd grader at Ridgecrest and Nika attends kindergarten at Ridgecrest.

New this year was a learning activity on Sunday for children age 10 and under. The activity taught children about succulents, how to pot one and provided them with instructions for care. There were other activities, such as coloring. Nika is very proud of her art work.

Richmond Beach resident Peter Liekkio

An expanded list of over 30 vendors displayed their plants, sold them, and taught people how to care for them.

North City resident Karen Summers was cashiering.

North City resident Karen Summers was at the cashier table. She is an active member of the Society and helped with the sale and show.

The show is held every year at Sky. If you missed it this year, you'll get another chance next fall.

Reminder - Secret Gardens of LFP - Garden Tour and Market on Saturday

Thursday, June 13, 2019

Reminder that the 17th annual Lake Forest Park Garden Tour is on Saturday, June 15, 2019, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

The Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Garden Tour and Market is a collaboration among four local nonprofits that serve the community—Third Place Commons, Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation, Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, and Lake Forest Park Garden Club.

The tour includes access to six local gardens, each selected for the community’s enjoyment by garden scouts.

Each garden provides a look at creative ways to imagine gardening.

Ticket holders for this self-guided tour can look behind the gates and into the grounds of some of the City’s finest gardens.

Music and art are featured in each of the gardens to enhance the experience of the tour.

Tickets are available online or at Town Center Hardware or Wildbirds Unlimited, and are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Visit the ticket table at LFP Town Center on tour day to exchange your advance ticket for a map to the gardens.

The lower level of the Town Center will be transformed into a plant and garden art market. Local nurseries will sell flowers, shrubs, and greenery that will thrive in our gardens.

Garden artists will have their art available for sale, too — whimsical birdhouses, mosaic artwork, garden pottery, mason bees, and more — all designed to make your garden more beautiful while harmonizing with your natural garden environment.

What will be at the Market at the Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Garden Tour and Market?

Friday, June 7, 2019

On Saturday, June 15, 9:00am - 3:00pm, the day of the Lake Forest Park Garden Tour, the lower level of the Town Center will be transformed into a lush green nursery.

This market is part of the Garden Tour event. Everyone is welcome to look, get inspired and even purchase plants and garden art that will thrive in our local environment.

Chimacum Woods will be at the market with a variety of rhododendrons. Chimacum Woods is devoted to preserving local species of rhodies.

The owners have also traveled extensively to preserve rhododendrons where their native habitat is threatened.

If the snow took out some of your favorite rhododendrons, check out the variety and color from this grower.

Lee Farms and Nursery have been a staple of the garden market for years. One regular visitor to the Market said,

“My garden is littered with the tags from Lee Farms. The plants they bring to the market are perfect for my garden. Plants grow in the shade and in the sunnier areas of my garden. I appreciate the variety and quality of the plants they bring.”

Mason Bee house
Have you ever wondered about Mason Bees? They are native North American bees and terrific pollinators. They are different from the honey bees. Mason bees (named because they build houses from mud like masons) are solitary bees. As early pollinators with a 30-day life span, they are used mostly for fruit trees and sometimes blueberries.

Ray Strelecki of Michael’s Mason Bees will be at the Market for the first time.

Ray raised 16,000 Mason Bees this year. He teaches people about how to raise bees and sells several varieties of Mason Bee houses.

Ray will be happy to chat with anyone interested in raising and releasing Mason Bees. And maybe entice you to buy a bee house!

Come visit all of these garden-related vendors:

and Veggie Fest: Free Family-Friendly Fun for Everyone, 12 to 3

Diggin’ Shoreline's annual Plant Sale fundraiser is this Saturday, May 18 at Cromwell Park NE 180th and Meridian Ave N from 9am to 5pm.

Plant lovers will want to arrive early to purchase veggies, perennials, and annuals grown from heirloom, open-pollinated and certified organic seed.

There’ll also be 18 varieties of tomatoes for tomato lovers, hardened off and ready to hit the ground running. Choose from a great selection of native plants, too. (Cash and personal checks welcome; sorry… no credit cards).

Join us for “Veggie Fest” rain or shine, from 12 Noon to 3pm

Bring a lawn chair. Invite your family and friends to join in the fun, under cover, and free of charge:
  • Relax to the music of Chris Poage in the amphitheater.
  • Get your face painted with an awesome bumble bee, butterfly, or hummingbird!
  • Kids: Make a cool nature craft!

We could use some extra event help!

It takes a lot of effort to hold a one-day plant sale in a public park! We can always use extra hands.

You need not have gardener knowledge to help out. Just a friendly smile and willingness to help folks find plants and pitch in where needed.

Organic veggie growers willing to help with planting tips with new gardeners are welcome, too.

Kids crafts area can use a helper or two to keep supplies stocked and organized, ready for little gardeners. And extra hands make lighter work of set-up and clean-up. To volunteer reply to this email with your time availability between 7:30am to 5:00pm. Even just a hour is most appreciated.

Diggin’ Shoreline is a local, all-volunteer, 501©3 non-profit organization serving Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Together, we practice, teach, and learn from each other healthy, sustainable ways to garden and build community, and most of all, have fun!

Local nurseries bringing truckloads of plants for the Garden Market June 15

Thursday, May 9, 2019

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park
June 15, 2019
17th Annual Lake Forest Park Garden Tour and Market June 15, 2019

What to look forward to at the Garden Tour and Market?

The Garden Market is an opportunity to find the right plant for the right place in your garden.

In addition to many smaller nurseries, two local wholesale nurseries will bring a truckload of plants and great advice for gardeners.

Lee Farm and Nursery is in Fall City. They are wholesale growers of plants that thrive in our local area. These include ground covers and specialty plants (last year they had white hardy fuchsia) that add color and splash.

Chimacum Woods is a Rhododendron Nursery. Their website says, “We are getting ready for the coming spring season with new offerings.

The greenhouse is bulging with a myriad of seedlings ready to pop into new growth.” The Nursery will bring interesting plants for your spring landscape. You just need to think about your space and what colors you need in your garden.

Tickets to the Garden Tour and Market are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the tour. Tickets are available at Town Center Hardware, Wildbirds Unlimited and the Sunday Farmers Market.

Tickets and more information are available at LFPGardentour.com.

The Garden Market will be held at Town Center, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE in Lake Forest Park. The tour will include selected private gardens in Lake Forest Park.
