What do you see in the clouds?

I think it's another advertisement for Shen Yun

A combination of a clear sky and a good camera lens and you get to see all the color bands of the rainbow.

As a former Rainbow Girl, I will recite the colors for you. Ready?

I can say them really fast, too.

Scene on the Sound: Mt. Rainier is not the only snow covered volcano

Mount Baker

Only in the last ten years have I learned that you can see Mount Baker from some points in Shoreline. On the waters of Puget Sound for one. From the sixth floor apartments of South Echo Lake. Maybe from upper floors of the Arabella in North City business district.

It's closest big city is Bellingham. I had a friend who grew up in Bellingham and spent time in boring classes gazing at the steam rising from the vents on Mount Baker - a volcano that never really goes to sleep in spite of the snowpack.

Photo: Sunrise is beautiful too

Wednesday, February 19, 2020

With the clear views of sunsets across the waters of Puget Sound, it's easy to forget that sunrise is also lovely, with the Cascades, foothills, and the trees of Lake Forest Park.

This golden morning was this week. Just remember to tell everyone out of town how much it rains. And don't tell them how lush and green it is when it rains.

Photos: The flowers say it's spring

Sunday, February 16, 2020

No matter that it's the middle of February - the flowers say it's spring.

Apparently it's the amount of light, not the time of year. This rhody is in full bloom in Richmond Beach. I have the same variety in central Shoreline and the buds aren't even showing color.

I have jonquils that sent up green shoots before the snow. They took a break during the snow and cold weather but now the green shoots are a foot high.

Spring is coming. What's that phrase? The harbinger of spring. I always thought that harbinger was an ugly sounding word for such a lovely concept.

The older she got, the more difficult it was for Cora to twist her neck like that;

Sorry, Cora! (She's a Double-crested Cormorant I spotted on Lake Washington this week. I love the colors of Cora's face and eyes, and the intricate feather pattern she displays)

A giant, shadowy bird was photographed flying over the Salish Sky yesterday.

It is unknown if the creature has any connection to the space ships which flew in from the north last week.

Photo: Sunset followed by hail

Sunday, February 2, 2020

There were beautiful sunsets all over central Puget Sound this evening. Mary Igl captured a couple different versions from Shoreline's west side.

I was in Kent for the sunset and it was baby colors - pink and blue - covering all the sky.

Around midnight I looked outside and the ground was covered with white. I checked with Carl Dinse and he suspects that it is small hail. It's cold out, too.

A correspondent in San Diego shared that it was 85 degrees there - 81 with wind chill. I described some of today's weather to him (hail, cold, high winds, thunder, nearby flooding and landslides..)

I told him I was really sorry that his weather was so boring.

Gadwall and Coot hanging out together

and was touched by their attachment to one another: rare for different species, right? And look, the Gadwall waits so nicely when the Coot dives for food.

Can you say "kleptoparasitism"? Back home, after some internet research, I learned that Gadwalls stalk Coots, wait for them to dive, then, when unsuspecting Coot surfaces, Gadwall seizes whatever food the Coot has found! Didn't see that here (Coot came up empty-beaked).
