Seven swans a swimming ...
minus four

OK, only three. But still.

These are probably Trumpeter Swans, here for the winter, though could be Tundra Swans. Hard for an amateur to tell at this distance:)

Photos: No more dirty birds

Monday, December 9, 2019

Photos by Mike Remarcke

After a long stretch with not much rain, we've been getting enough precipitation to make puddles, to the great delight of these birds, who were so happy to finally get a good bath.

Backyard wildlife habitats usually lack only one thing - a source of water for drinking and bathing.

You can't always count on puddles!

What is the strange creature on shore - the one with the odd contraption attached to his face - no wait, now it's gone. It makes a clicking noise. I will have to stare harder to understand this.

He spends a lot of time by our Bog but never comes in the water. Sometimes we think he is one of us. Sometimes we are not sure.

This will require much more study.

As the sun was setting for a short time one could see Jupiter, Venus, and the moon. Jupiter set at 5:46 followed by Venus at 5:58. It was a beautiful Thanksgiving evening in Shoreline.

Photo: Good neighbor

Tuesday, November 5, 2019

Seattle Poppy took this photo on 8th NW of a man taking a container full of leaves to a neighbor who wanted mulch for his yard.

I can't decide which is the better story - the Good Neighbor sharing his compost - the fact that both are being good environmentalists - or the fact that the Good Neighbor is traveling down the street on a skateboard!

Photo: Spider

Sunday, November 3, 2019

There are still a few of the orb weavers around, waiting to set up their egg sacs and die. They are all named "Charlotte" of course. In the meantime, they are catching and eating lots of small, annoying flying creatures. From the damage to the center of her web, she caught at least one creature this day.

They tear down their webs and create a new one every morning. The guy wires that anchor the webs are, relatively speaking, stronger than steel. I once saw a spider anchor her line to my small fruit tree. The line, glittering in the sunlight, stretched up and over 50 feet to the top of my neighbor's tall maple. That must have been some ride down!
