f-STOP photo club exhibit at Café Solstice in University District, through February 29, 2012

Shoreline Community College's f-Stop Photo Cub is exhibiting photographs from the current issue of the club's magazine "1000 Words" in a group show at Café Solstice, located at 4116 University Way NE in the University District. The exhibit runs through February 29 and the club's photography magazine will be for sale at the café through the end of the month as well.

“1000 Words” is published by the club to showcase the work of Shoreline’s photography students as well as amateur photographers in the community. Each issue has a singular theme. The current issue’s theme is Trail Mix. The photographs on display are digital prints of how the photographers have interpreted the Trail Mix theme in the magazine.

The main goal of the ƒ-Stop Photography Club is to promote a positive environment for Shoreline’s photography students to stretch and grow as photographers. The club magazine was established to provide student and community photographers an opportunity to publish their work. The proceeds from magazine sales go towards continuing publication, and to pursue other opportunities to further enhance the Shoreline CC photography student’s experience.

Photos requested for "King Tides"

Monday, December 26, 2011

According to our News Partner KING 5, King Tide is the term for unusually high tides which occur
"when the sun and moon’s gravitational pull reinforce one another. The Washington state Department of Ecology says the tides 'offer a glimpse of how rising sea levels from global climate change could affect the state’s coastal areas.'"
The Department of Ecology is asking for people to share their photos documenting these tides.

They offer the following tips for taking photos:
  • To better illustrate the impacts of the high winter tides, we recommend taking photos in areas where the high water levels can be gauged against familiar landmarks such as sea walls, jetties, bridge supports, dikes, buildings, roads or other infrastructure.
  • Please do not include people in your photos
All the information is on their website.

Here is the schedule for King Tides in Puget Sound
  • December 27th - 8:00 am – 8:15 am
  • December 28th - 8:00 am – 8: 45 am
  • December 29th - 8:00 am – 9:00 am
  • January 13th - 8:00 am – 8:45 am
  • January 14th - 8:00 am – 9:15 am
  • January 15th -8:30 am – 10:00 am
  • January 16th - 9:00 am – 10:30 am
  • January 17th - 9:30 am – 11:30 am
Please send a copy of your photo to the ShorelineAreaNews for publication.  Identify where your photo was taken.  It does not have to be in Shoreline, as long as the photographer lives in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds, or Lynnwood.  (Address and contact info requested).

Shorewood teacher honored as top photography educator

Sally Tonkin, photography and English teacher at Shorewood High School, received the Honored Educator award recently at the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) Northwest Regional Conference. This was the first time this award has gone to a high school educator.

Tonkin was nominated by Walter Bodle, the founder of a non-profit organization for at-risk kids called Youth in Focus. She is a member of the board at YIF, which is an after-school program that uses intensive photography training as a tool to help disadvantaged teens develop personal voice, positive identity, social skills and artistic skills.

"Sally Tonkin is an exceptional, inspiring and motivational educator," her nomination read in part. She believes that the creation of a photograph is a transformative experience: it takes the photographer outside of him or herself and forces them to interact with the wider world. But, at the same time, it compels the photographer to look inward and examine and express how they see the world."

Sally has taught art, English and photography at Shorewood High School since 1995, following a career as a newspaper photographer. She was selected by the state as one of four teachers to develop standards for high school photography classes. She received an Adobe Fellowship for skills using software programs to help students see their creative concepts realized. Her students have consistently placed in the top three in the Washington State High School Photography Contest, and many have gone on to study photography in college.

SPE, a national nonprofit organization, provides not only a forum for the discussion of photography as a means of creative expression and cultural insight, but nurtures its development through teaching, criticism, and scholarship. To view Sally's photography work, see her website

The Other Half: Displays of Wealth in a Recession
Double-Take: Photographs by Mateo Zapata Zachai

The Other Half is Hsu’s look behind the closed-door gatherings of wealth, or perceived wealth, in America. The photographs were taken as rumors of an impending recession quickly became reality. The project explores ostentatious attire, unconventional gestures, and objects of gratification.

Mateo Zachai, Untitled (Ballard #209) ,
20” x 24”, C-print
Courtesy SCC Gallery

Mateo’s Double-Take is a series of deconstructed photographs created by punching holes in negatives and reconstructing them in the darkroom. The rows of disaggregated photographic circles are inspired by Lichtenstein’s Ben-Day Dots and Chuck Close’s cell-grid portraits.

Howard Hsu and Mateo Zachai are photography instructors at Shoreline Community College.

An artist reception will be held from 3-4 p.m., January 12, 2012 in the College Gallery.

The College Gallery at Shoreline Community College is located near the main entrance to the college on the south end of campus in the 1000 Building. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parking and pay stations are nearby. The college is located at 16101 Greenwood Avenue North, west of Aurora Avenue and just north of Seattle city limits.
