Photo: Burlington Northern train and the USS Ronald Reagan race to the north along Richmond Beach

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

A Burlington Northern train catches up with the USS Ronald Reagan
as they both head north out of Richmond Beach

Marc Weinberg comments:
A friend called to tell me the USS Ronald Reagan was leaving Puget Sound this morning and I rushed down to the Richmond Beach shoreline to find a good viewing spot as she came along. I selected a vantage point at the Richmond Beach Kayu Kayu Ac Park which would be clear of trees.
I had taken a few practice shots when I heard a northbound train approaching. I knew instantly that my view of the ship would be blocked and I wondered if I could be lucky enough to capture both the train and the ship. I only had one chance and one click of the shutter and the ship would be gone. This photo (above) is the result.

According to the Kitsap Sun,

The USS Ronald Reagan departed Monday morning (from the Bremerton shipyards) for its San Diego home after 14 months of work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

The Reagan crew, shipyard workers and contractors completed what the Navy calls a Docked Planned Incremental Availability — $218 million in maintenance and upgraded systems, much of it performed in dry dock. Projects ranged from preserving the ship’s exterior and island, complete overhaul of its internal computer network, and work on the main engines and rudders,

The Sun reports that the future of the Reagan is not clear.

Reagan is headed back to Naval Base Coronado, but its future isn’t clear. It will rejoin the West Coast deployment cycle, which includes the Middle East and western Pacific Ocean. The ship isn’t scheduled to deploy for some time, said Cmdr. Kevin Stephens of Naval Air Forces Pacific, and budget problems jeopardize its time on the water.

Wind surfers and kite boarders revel in the wind

And the race is on!

Photos by Marc Weinberg

Friday's wind storm caught the attention of Windsurfers and Kite Boarders alike. Puget Sound churned like a salty milk shake, delighting the wind seeking crowd despite the dark sky and sea. As the late afternoon sun broke through over Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, the colors of the kites became even more brilliant against the background.

They don't look quite real, do they? More like a painting. It's probably because we are not accustomed to clear blue skies this time of year.

Pink sunset on the Cascades.

North City on 15th NE sits on a ridge which is the highest point in Shoreline and rivals the height of Horizon View in Lake Forest Park. With a little elevation, there are terrific views of the Cascades and Mt Rainier.

Jon Ann Cruver got this amazing view of a pink sunset on Cascades on the last day of 2012. Brrr!

Happy New Year!

Taken at a local farmers' market (not LFP or Shoreline)

Photographer Marc Weinberg says,
"In college I was the president of the gun club.  We shot 22 caliber rifles on a range at targets.  It was a sport like any other.  I've never been to a range or handled a weapon since except when I was in the military.  I don't own a gun now and I'm appalled to hear the current argument and the preceding ones as well about why we should allow assault weapons on the street and what we should do to stop the killings.
"I took this photo at 11:04am on September 1, 2012 at a local street market.  Is this the kind of place where we want to live?  Not me!"

While half the country is boarded up against the wind of Super Storm Sandy, our athletic types were out enjoying it to the fullest and basking in the 60 degree sunshine as well.

Pink tide. Photo by Lee Lageschulte

Lee Lageschulte's photo is of the decorative wall at the Blue Bridges at 155th and Aurora. Since the wall is sea shore themed, it seems quite appropriate that the flowers look like flotsam washing up on the beach.

Or perhaps you have a different interpretation?

Gustav A. Krause
Beta Theta Pi
Beloit, Wisconsin

Do you recognize this photo?

Shoreline resident Leanne Hofford is looking for the owner of this photo and several others that she found at the bottom of a box she picked up from the recycling bin at the Shoreline transfer station well over a year ago.

On the back of several of the photos is written the name Gustav A. Krause and Beloit, Wis. One photo is labeled on the back as the Beta Theta Pi house.

A little “googling’ brought up a record listing Gustav Adolphus Krause from Klamath Falls, Oregon as a member of Beta Theta Pi at Beloit College in 1910.

If you have any information about who may own this photo, please email Leanne.
