Echo Lake Elementary parent's persistence makes walking to school safer for students

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Photo courtesy Echo Lake Elementary PTA
Sometimes change comes because of a season or a lapse of time. And sometimes change comes because of downright dogged persistence to make something happen.

This week, the City of Shoreline made a big improvement to make Echo Lake a little safer for pedestrians and importantly, students who attend Echo Lake elementary.

Concerned parent, PTA volunteer and all around amazing neighbor Ellen Ackroyd has been working to make this change.

She reached out to the City advocating for the addition of barriers at the corner of Ashworth and 195th where there is no sidewalk or barrier from the heavily traveled street.

And she kept reaching out until the City moved into action.

Her persistence resulted in the city erecting permanent safety lane delineators to separate the pedestrian walkway from the busy intersection of Ashworth and 195th.

It will no doubt improve safety at this corner and is an example of what an active community member can help accomplish. Thank you, Ellen!

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Silje as our next Executive Director,” notes Aaron Stadler, Chair of the Third Place Commons Board of Directors.
“Even in a pool of outstanding candidates, it was clear that her extraordinary talents, experience, and long history of service to Third Place Commons have positioned her to be tremendously successful in this new role.”

Silje has an extensive background in nonprofit leadership and organizational management, as well as a wealth of experience in community engagement and event planning. She has a deep passion for building and connecting communities and has been a recognized local and regional leader through both her professional and volunteer service.

On May 13, 2024 Washington State Alpha Delta Chapter of A∆K, an international organization of women educators dedicated to excellence in education, altruism, and world understanding, presented two scholarships to local students planning to become teachers.

This scholarship for $1,000 is offered annually to graduating seniors from Shorecrest, Shorewood and Edmonds-Woodway who excel academically, are involved in activities and community service, and have demonstrated a desire to work with children.

This year’s outstanding winners are Darci Dalziel and Ava McGinness!

Chris, Ava, and Leslie McGinness

Ava McGinness
, the daughter of Chris and Leslie McGinness, will graduate from Edmonds-Woodway High School this spring. She has a combination of abilities, experiences and an approach to life that will make her a wonderful teacher. A committed student who recognizes the role of education in self-growth and accomplishment, she has received excellent grades in such rigorous courses as IB English, IB Marine Biology, IB Business & Management, AP Calculus, and three years of Spanish..

Ava credits a particular group of teachers for giving her the confidence to believe that all things are possible if you set your heart to it. She would like to inspire her future students to have that confidence to overcome boundaries in their lives and become their best selves.

Ava has already had opportunities to do that as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Yost Pool, the captain of her club volleyball team and player on her school team, a volunteer in her church nursery, a teacher of young children during church mission trips to Texas and Colorado, and a babysitter. Ava also works at Crista Senior Living where the residents appreciate her commitment to exceptional service with kindness and a smile.

Ava plans to attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ to pursue a degree in elementary education. She hopes to teach second grade. With her positive, kind attitude, love of children, and her many abilities, she will be an asset to any school staff.

Darci with her mother Mindy Dalziel

Shorecrest High School senior, Darci Dalziel
is the daughter of Don and Mindy Dalziel. She has the experience and qualities to make an excellent teacher. Coming from a family of educators, she already knows the dedication and hours outside the classroom needed to be an effective and supportive teacher and has been inspired by her parents and former teachers, such as Ms. Libby of LFP Elementary, to be that teacher.

Darci is a member of the National Honor Society and has maintained a 3.9GPA while taking UW Pre-Calculus, AP US History, AP Calculus, and AP Environmental Science. She also took three years of Spanish, Treble Choir and Advanced Mixed Choir. Darci performs with the Shorecrest Flag Team, and is a member of the Asian American Pacific Islander Culture Club.

An exceptional athlete, Darci is a team player and a leader. She was a standout on the SC Varsity Girls Track and Field team four years and served as captain twice. Soccer is her first love! She played four years of Varsity Soccer at SC, being selected for All-League and All-Area awards, and served as captain this year. She also played Club Premier Soccer two years and was a State Qualifier this year.

Darci has already put her desire to work with children in practice as a member of Natural Helpers, a coach for summer soccer camps, and a volunteer at Lake Forest Park Elementary and Kellogg MS. After earning her degree in Elementary Education at St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, Darci hopes to return to this area to teach. We hope she does!

Former Boy Scout volunteer sentenced to 22 years in prison for hiding cameras in camp bathrooms

Wednesday, May 8, 2024

ST. LOUIS – U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel on Thursday sentenced a former Boy Scout volunteer from Redmond, WA to 22 years in prison for hiding cameras in bathrooms at a St. Francois County, Missouri scout camp.

Judge Sippel also ordered David Lee Nelson to pay $55,000 in special assessments that will go to a fund for victims and prevention programs and $6,810 to pay for counseling for his victims.

After he gets out of prison, Nelson will be on supervised release for life, with special conditions that include a prohibition against any contact with minors without permission.

Nelson hid two cameras in bathrooms at the S Bar F Scout Ranch in St. Francois County in July of 2021 while working there as a volunteer. Nelson hid the cameras in paper towel dispensers, positioning them so they would capture a shower stall and other portions of the bathroom.

One camera was discovered when a scout leader and scouts were cleaning out one of the restroom stalls. A search uncovered another camera, and leaders then called the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department.

When questioned later by a sheriff’s deputy after being spotted near the bathrooms, Nelson lied and said he was looking for a cell phone charger that he’d left in the stall.

During Thursday’s hearing, victims and their parents said Nelson was supposed to be protecting the scouts and was supposed to be someone children could trust. Nelson’s crimes, they said, have now left them unable to trust others. The victims also said they now experience fear and discomfort every time they try to use a public bathroom.

Nelson, 41, of Redmond, Washington, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of production of child pornography and two counts of attempted production of child pornography.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.

Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Department of Justice Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

New Executive Director named for ShoreLake Arts

Thursday, May 2, 2024

John Farrimond
Executive Director, ShoreLake Arts
It is with great excitement that we announce the acceptance of the position of Executive Director of ShoreLake Arts by John Farrimond!

John comes to us from Tennessee where he was the CEO for the Chattanooga Ballet. He helped build the organization into a strong arts organization with a larger staff, budget, and more class offerings.

John also created a creative outreach program to the rural community around Chattanooga to bring ballet to these areas where folks don't usually get the opportunity to enjoy it.

John has vast experience as a CEO, consultant and president of several non-profit organizations through the years focusing initially on special needs children, a personal passion of his. John has also had his hand in the arts for years himself working as an actor and producer in his early years and currently finishing up a writing project.

Thankfully John's love of the Pacific NW brought him here from Tennessee. He has filled his time here consulting with various firms and sharing his many talents and expertise while looking for a more permanent home.

We are fortunate to have John join ShoreLake Arts. Our new ED is already out in the community getting to know people, learning about the area and sharing his love for the arts.

The Western Golf Association (WGA), headquartered in Glenview Illinois, has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930.

To qualify for the Evans Scholarship, each student must meet the Program’s four selection criteria and show a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

Local scholarship recipients are:
  • Rose Darley, Shoreline, Shorewood High School
  • Reagan Dunphy, Shoreline, Shorewood High School
  • Ian Ngethe, Edmonds, Meadowdale High School

Currently, a record 1,130 caddies are enrolled at 24 universities nationwide – including 31 at the University of Washington – as Evans Scholars. More than 12,040 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the Program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. in 1930.

“We are thrilled to welcome this new group of student caddies to the Evans Scholars family,” said WGA Chairman Steve Colnitis. “Their dedication in the classroom, on the golf course and in their communities represents what our Program has been about since 1930.”
