As a part of Washington’s Elementary and Secondary Act waiver granted by the Department of Education, the state has designated 58 top-performing and most improving Title I schools as “Reward Schools.,” including Parkwood Elementary in Shoreline.

Reward Schools are classified either as “highest performing” or “high-progress.”

Parkwood was rated as highest-performing as a Title I school that has met Adequate Yearly Progress in both Reading and Math for its “all students” group and all subgroups for three years.

The mission of Title I, a federally funded program, is to assist children from low-income areas with their basic skills. Twenty-five different languages are spoken in Parkwood students' homes, 50 percent of its students qualify for free/reduced meals, and 19 percent of the students are enrolled in its ELL program.

“Schools identified as Reward Schools have been doing the work that it takes to make a difference for students. School staff, students, parents and communities should be proud to join this distinguished group,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn said.

Laura Ploudre
Parkwood has received Washington Achievement Awards for Overall Excellence and Closing Achievement Gaps for the past two years.

The school received the State Title I Academic Achievement Award in 2011 and the State Title I Improvement Award in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

Doug Poage is the new Parkwood principal, succeeding Laura Ploudre, who is now assistant principal at Einstein Middle School.

ArtsEd Washington (ArtsEd WA), in partnership with the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) has selected Parkwood Elementary in Shoreline as a winner of the second annual Schools of Excellence in Arts Education Award, honoring K-12 schools providing exemplary arts education to their students.

The award was presented to Parkwood Principal Laura Ploudre' at the June 25 Shoreline School Board meeting.

In making the award to Parkwood, they cited its 15-year commitment to the arts, growing its program from two and three teachers to now having all staff engaged in ongoing arts integration. Arts instruction goals are a standard part of the school plan. The arts are offered within the school day, and lessons are aligned with standards. Community partnerships have helped expand school programming, such as with the Seattle Dance Project that resulted in 12 months of dance instruction for every student and included many student performances.

Parkwood and Adams Elementary in Seattle were specifically chosen for making all components of the arts --dance, music, theater and visual arts -- an essential part of their students' education.

"It is important to celebrate schools, such as these, that are taking active and intentional steps to ensure students receive instruction in the arts during school hours - required learning by law in Washington state," said Una McAlinden, executive director for ArtsEd Washington. "The commitment of the school principals and teachers to provide the arts equitably is critical to the long-term sustainability of these programs and ensures that every student reaps the many benefits of sustained arts participation."
"With the new expectations of principals and teachers on the evaluation front, the arts are going to be more important than ever," said Gary Kipp, AWSP's Executive Director. "We commend the work of these schools and their respective building leaders who continue to pave the way for arts integration."

The Schools of Excellence in Arts Education Awards are inspired by a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and is open to all K-12 schools throughout Washington state with exemplary arts education programs.

About ArtsEd Washington

Doug Poage has been selected as principal of Parkwood Elementary School in Shoreline, Superintendent Sue Walker announced. His appointment is effective July 1 and is subject to approval by the Shoreline School Board.

He succeeds Laura Ploudré, who is leaving Parkwood after 11 years as principal to pursue new opportunities in education.

Doug has been the principal of Carnation Elementary School in the Riverview School District since 2001. During the past 11 years the school has shown dramatic improvement and success in student learning in both academic and arts programs.

Carnation was honored as a School of Distinction in 2010 for being in the top five percent of schools improving in reading and math. In addition, in 2011 Carnation was recognized by Arts Ed. Washington and the Kennedy Center as a School of Excellence in Arts Education.

Like Parkwood, it has become a model school for using the arts to improve academic achievement for all students.

Doug began his career in education as an elementary teacher in the Wichita, Kansas School District. After moving to Washington in 1996, he was an elementary teacher in the White River School District for five years. He received his bachelor and master’s degrees from Friends University in Kansas and his administration certificate from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma.

Doug has five children ranging in age from 12 to 21. Two of his children are from Ethiopia. In 2004 he spent the summer working and training teachers in a school in South Africa.

Parkwood Elementary fire alarm update

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

From Craig Degginger, Shoreline School District

Due to an issue with a City Light electrical vault on the north end of the Parkwood campus on Monday, the students were safely evacuated for approximately 30 minutes to the school’s field south of the building. The students ultimately returned to the building to complete the day, albeit without power, and classes were dismissed at the regular time. After care operated as usual. City Light restored power later in the afternoon to the Parkwood building. Thanks to our community safety partners with Shoreline Fire and Shoreline police, and to our outstanding students and staff for their excellent response.

The kids were evacuated to the school fields and play area. School officials decided to keep them in school, and classes continued outside.

The problem was traced to an electrical vault and Seattle City Light was called in.  They were on site by 2:30pm and students were back in the building.

Parkwood is located at 1815 N 155th, Shoreline WA 98133 in the south central corridor of the Shoreline School District.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Seahawks cornerback Roy Lewis made a surprise appearance at the Shoreline school, where Ibach teaches first grade and Mesler teaches third grade, delighting both the teachers and the 430 students on hand. Tom Marra, president and chief executive officer of Symetra Financial, joined Lewis for the presentations.

Bethany Ibach was nominated for a Symetra Hero in the Classroom award by Parkwood Elementary School principal Laura Ploudre, who cited Ibach’s passion for teaching, her successful first-grade blended program, and her resilience following a recent battle with a brain tumor. “Bethany’s true talent lies in taking the natural energy of six- and seven-year-olds and directing it toward engaging, hands-on learning activities that result in outstanding student achievement. While she recognizes each student’s individual struggles or needs, she lovingly holds them accountable to give their best effort. She is the ‘warm demander’ who says, “I know you can do this!”
Kristin Mesler is an extremely talented, skillful teacher who gives her students an outstanding education in academics as well as unconditional love, an acceptance of diversity and a window into the joy of learning,” said co-worker Dianne Hertzberg, who nominated Mesler. “Her mainstream third-grade classroom successfully blends eight special education students, giving each child, of every ability, the chance to learn from others.” The school’s PTA also recently honored Mesler as 2010 Teacher of the Year.

Ibach and Mesler are two of 24 K-12 teachers across the Puget Sound area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2010 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations. In addition, they receive tickets to a Seahawks home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at Qwest Field. Mesler will be recognized at the Dec. 19 game when the Seahawks take on the Atlanta Falcons, and Ibach will be honored at the Jan. 2 game against the St. Louis Rams.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to balance the core curriculum with students’ individual needs; build trust among students, parents and the community; and invest in their students’ long-term success.

In addition to honoring exceptional teachers on and off the field, each of the schools represented by a 2010 teacher Hero is eligible for an MVP Award, which provides funding to enhance learning in Seattle-area schools. Three $10,000 grants will be awarded at the end of the 2010 football season.  More information about Symetra Heroes in the Classroom is available at their website.
