Special guests at Echo Lake native plant restoration

Wednesday, July 17, 2024

By Ann Michel

Volunteers are transforming our parks here in Shoreline.

We had some special guests at our Native Plant Restoration party at Echo Lake Park. Huge thanks to Wendi Valle and her hardworking staff from State Farm Insurance. They are now expert mulch movers!

And we were thrilled to have Erin Cox with us; she creates beautiful baskets and hats (modeled here) with the leaves and vines of invasive plants. Here she is showing off a huge yellow flagged iris that will become art! We all learned a lot from Erin about her craft and farm.

We always love our regular volunteers. Echo Lake is beloved far and wide! Here are some of our volunteers from Shoreline, Seattle and from Lake Forest Park, who come together to support Echo Lake.

Thank you to Erin, Myra, Manuele, Wendi, Nancy and Brendan. Not pictured: Paul, Zach and Edith.

Many thanks to the Green Shoreline Partnership, which provides plants, tools and support to all the parks in Shoreline.

Would you like to join a work party? Make your local park greener and better prepared for global warming? Come join us! :)

For the next 6 weeks, the City’s contractor will be removing invasive plants – primarily blackberry canes, crowns and roots – using light machinery and a lot of manual labor. The removal of the invasive plants will provide a healthier and more vibrant space for park users.

The removal of the invasive plants is a council requested and approved project that the City is undertaking to manage the park’s operations and functionality.

LFP Leadership plan to attend the Comp Plan Open House on July 16, 2024

Lake Forest Park Planning Commission in a recent session

Lake Forest Park has issued notice that a quorum of the city council, as well as the Planning Commission, Climate Action Committee, Tree Board, and Parks & Recreation Advisory Board plan to attend the Comprehensive Plan Open House on July 16, 2024.

City of Lake Forest Park Comprehensive Plan Periodic Update Open House
Tuesday, July 16, 2024, 4:00pm – 7:00pm

The City of Lake Forest Park’s decennial Comprehensive Plan periodic update is well under way, now into its second year.

The active update effort is required by state law to address recent legislative changes, new King County Countywide Planning Policies (CPPs), and the Puget Sound Regional Council's (PSRC) VISION 2050.

Collectively, there are new requirements and policies that change the ways we plan for housing, address the needs of vulnerable residents, and incorporate climate planning.

The open house for the community is hosted by the City's Planning Commission. The open house is an informal setting to learn about the update, ask questions, and give feedback to the Commissioners as a check-in at this point in the process.

The Commission has reviewed the existing goals and policies in the adopted 2015 Comprehensive Plan and made draft amendments to each element.

Before the Commission holds a noticed public hearing and makes a recommendation to the City Council, the open house is an opportunity to update and check in with the community on this important effort.

Meet the fireweed of Hamlin Park (not a weed)

Sunday, July 7, 2024

A bee collects fireweed nectar in Hamlin Park in July

By Oliver Moffat

The pollinators are literally buzzing about the big fireweed patches at Hamlin Park these days.

Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium) is common across North America and gets its name because it is a pioneer species - the first plant to grow after a fire or other disturbance.

Despite its name, fireweed is considered a beneficial species (not a weed). There are two, large fireweed patches at the forest restoration site at the north end of Hamlin Park where the fireweed is aggressive enough to out-compete even the noxious weeds such as the himalayan blackberry.

YouTube: How to Harvest and Process Fireweed

Fireweed is traditionally harvested by native peoples of the Pacific Northwest and in Lushootseed (the traditional language of the Puget Sound) its name is x̌ač̓tac. In the spring, fireweed shoots are a nutritious vegetable and tea can be made from the leaves. The summer nectar is used for honey and jelly and in the autumn, the fluff can be used as fiber for weaving and padding.

If you walk through Hamlin Park, take some time to stand near the fireweed and watch for hummingbirds, bees and butterflies feasting on the purple blossoms.

Fireweed shoots poke through the soil in February in Hamlin Park

Fireweed is an impressive grower: each year the plants grow from underground shoots into towering stocks topped by purple flowers. Later in the summer, they will release fluff to float on the breeze and spread seeds far and wide. The canes die back in the autumn and start over again in the spring.

There’s plenty of forest restoration work to be done in Hamlin Park and at parks across Shoreline. Work parties are a great way to make new friends and connect with our natural open spaces.

Note: Shoreline municipal code forbids the removal, damage, or destruction of trees, shrubs and plants in city parks - so please leave the fireweed for wildlife.

Travels with Charlie: Our favorite park

Sunday, June 30, 2024

Charlie and I headed to Lake Washington to look and sniff around. At the end of the sidewalk is a bit of a hidden bridge with a great view of Little Creek inlet right next to the boats.

The Pier in the background is a clue where we are?

It’s one of our favorite parks to visit.

Walk out on the water at Log Boom Park.

Enjoy some outside time…

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Skandia Midsommarfest June 30, 2024 at St. Edward in Kenmore

Monday, June 24, 2024

Celebrating Midsommar in the Pacific Northwest!
Sunday, June 30, 2024
11am to 6pm
Free Admission

Sign up TODAY to volunteer!

The summer solstice is celebrated by all the Nordic countries, although the celebration may be called by different names, and celebrated in different ways on different days. In Sweden it is called “Midsommar,” so Midsommarfest means Midsommar party or festival.

In Norway, the celebration of the solstice is called Sankt Hans Aften or Jonsok-kveld. In Denmark, the celebration is called Sankthans or Sankthansaften ("St. John's Eve") and in Finland it is called Juhannus.

Midsommarfest, as presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with  raising of a garlanded Midsommar pole, a serpentine dance around the pole, and scores of costumed musicians and dancers - traditions practiced in Sweden for centuries.

Over the years since the 1959 inception of Skandia Midsommarfest, the festival has expanded to include contributions from all the Nordic countries so that the rich cultural diversity of all those lands can be experienced by Skandia Midsommarfest attendees.

Spectators are invited to help hoist the 35-foot (previously 45-foot) pole with their muscles or cheers, and then to join in the rousing långdans (serpentine running dance) around the pole, accompanied by the stirring music of massed musicians. Entertainment, food, crafts activities and good times continue throughout the park grounds.

A special focus of Midsommarfest is the Hemslöjdsmarknad - an avenue of traditional crafts where carefully selected crafts people demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Traditional midsommar food and other Scandinavian delicacies will be offered.

And a flower crown -- the classic midsommarkrans -- ready to decorate to your own taste, will add the finishing touch to your midsommar celebration.

Midsommarfest showcases a wealth of wonderful music and dancing by the Northwest's premier Nordic folk musicians and dancers (and this area boasts some of the best in the Western Hemisphere).

Allspel 2024 led by Ellen Wijsman

Tunes to be played 2x each, in addition to the first, midsommar långdans played longer. After the långdans, start with Ringnessen; end with Stockholmslåten, with probably ~5-6 of the remaining tunes in between. (not in final order)

2. Ringnesen (Reinlender, Norway)
3. Snar å ta åt (Rørospols, Norway)
4. Stens vals (Waltz, Dalarna,Sweden)
5. Grannas Britta (Slängpolska, Ostergotland Sweden)
