Executive Dow Constantine just announced council approval of awards from the 2020 King county parks levy. 53 projects throughout King county will receive funds for specific projects, with an emphasis on underserved communities.

Among the 53 projects is $598,451 for Brugger's Bog Park, City of Shoreline

The City of Shoreline will bring more open space and recreation to an underserved area by improving Brugger's Bog Park through removal of a dilapidated play area, restoration of critical areas, and development of a walking loop and boardwalk, new play area, and multi-sport court.

Just inside Seattle's northeast border with Shoreline / Lake Forest Park, Seattle Parks and Recreation will have $720,000 for the redesign of Little Brook Park in northeast Seattle to improve safety, accessibility, visibility, and community gathering through a community garden, raised play area, and other amenities.

This summer marks the halfway point for the six-year King County Parks Levy, which will expire at the end of 2025.

King County Parks produced an update that shows progress it has made so far.

Make same-day camping reservations at three popular state parks with expanded program

Washington State Parks expands pilot program for same-day reservations at Deception Pass, Millersylvania and Cape Disappointment

OLYMPIA – Aug. 28, 2023 – Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (Parks) is excited to expand its pilot program for same-day reservations at select parks.

Beginning September 5, 2023 Park visitors can make same-day camping reservations at Millersylvania and Cape Disappointment as well as Deception Pass, which has offered same-day reservations for more than five years.

With the expansion of the program, Deception Pass will also begin accepting same-day reservations during the off season.

Same-day reservations will allow visitors to secure campsites before heading to a park instead of loading up and arriving in hopes that an empty site will be available when they arrive. This will also allow parks to better fill empty sites when there are last-minute cancellations.

Visitors can make same-day camping reservations during the following timeframes:
  • June 1– Sept. 30: reservations can be made until 8:00pm
  • Oct. 1 – May 31: reservations can be made until 4:00pm

Same day reservations are only available for campsites and do not apply to group sites, roofed accommodations, vacation rentals or other facilities.

They plan to evaluate the pilot program and any necessary improvements over the next several months before considering adding additional parks to the program.

Same-day reservations can be made just like regular reservations. Book your stay online here, or by calling (888) CAMPOUT or 888-226-7688).

More families can enjoy state parks with updated Foster Family Program and pass

Saturday, September 2, 2023

OLYMPIA — Aug. 31, 2023 — The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (Parks) has implemented changes to its Foster Family Program to provide more families with the opportunity to camp and enjoy parks.

The changes include a new streamlined application process, an official discount pass card for families to carry and an expansion of the program to include more qualifying families.

The Foster Family Pass gives Washington residents who provide out-of-home care – including foster parents, caregivers and kinship families – to a minor child access to free nightly camping (reservation processing fees still apply) and free day-use parking.

Parks is now accepting applications for the updated Foster Family Program.

Foster families were previously required to show their Washington State driver’s license and a foster license or caregiver ID card to prove they qualify for the program. However, this process excluded an estimated 48 percent of families who provide out-of-home care to children.

The new Foster Family Pass will open the program to kinship families. Now, families who provide out-of-home care to a child from their extended family will be able to enjoy this discount with their loved ones.

Families can still use the current system of proof until June 1, 2024. After that, they will need to apply for the new Foster Family Pass to participate.

Receive help with Foster Family Program applications and trip planning from our Information Center by calling 360-902-8844 or emailing infocent@parks.wa.gov.

Goats on Parade

Wednesday, August 30, 2023

Despite the less than perfect air quality on Saturday, August 26, 2023 the Earthcraft Services goat herd enjoyed their chance to once again dine on a diet of weeds at 'Midvale Gardens' located at 192nd and the Interurban Trail in Shoreline.

If you missed this opportunity, there will be another chance.

The next 'goat day' is tentatively scheduled for the third Saturday in September.

Shoreline Police Officer Mainaga makes friends with the goats.

Ed Portnow (goat herd owner) explained the advantages of using goats to clear overgrown properties.

The herd is funded by donations through Diggin' Shoreline

Derek and Diggin' Shoreline set up a Goat Fund Me Diggin' Shoreline site to raise money from the public.

More progress at Darnell Park

Himalayan blackberry root crown. Photo by Rusty McTaggert
Kaleidoscope Lead / Darnell Park Restoration Lead
There's a special place in gardening heaven for people who work to remove blackberry roots.
The Kaleidoscope crew pushed into a new section of Darnell Park, 1125 N 165th St, Shoreline WA 98133, on August 24, 2023.  A day of work thoroughly removing Himalayan blackberry revealed a grove of elderberry and many ferns.

This section is now known to Kaleidoscope crew as elderberry cove.  We look forward to mulching this area in September and planting native companions for the elderberry this fall.

Visit the goats Saturday August 26, 2023 on the Interurban Trail

Sunday, August 20, 2023

Poster boy Filbert is happy to pose for the camera

By Diane Hettrick

Goat Day at Midvale Gardens on Saturday August 26, 2023, 10am to 6pm.

Midvale Gardens is a piece of land adjacent to the Interurban Trail at 192nd and Midvale, behind Sky Nursery. The property belongs to Seattle City Light, which allowed it to go wild.

A thick tangle of blackberry and ivy eight feet tall choked the trees on the site, looking impenetrable to all but the homeless and drug users who burrowed into it to make camps.

Neighbors, led by Derek Creisler, began a clean up project. Affiliating with Shoreline Parks - and through them City Light - they started to clear the site.

Volunteers from the immediate neighborhood and the greater Echo Lake Neighborhood Association held work parties to remove piles and piles of vines. Parks staff came in and cleared the garbage and drug paraphernalia as well as hauling away the piles of vegetation.

Midvale Gardens - before and after
Photos by Derek Creisler

Derek joined Diggin' Shoreline, a local organization dedicated to the creation of community gardens, which has 501(c)3 status, and enlisted their help and sponsorship. Clearing the site was still slow and laborious.

And then - someone (probably Derek) said "What about the goats?"

Ed Portnow owns Earthcraft Services and rents out a herd of hungry goats to clear overgrown sites like this. The City of Shoreline has used Ed's goats on several occasions, usually for clearing brambles on steep slopes, which, of course, are no obstacle to goats.

Derek says "Ed loves the project and the goats need to eat."

In the beginning the City funded the cost through environmental mini-grants but that fund was never intended to support ongoing projects. Rather than ask for more from the city, Derek and Diggin' Shoreline set up a Goat Fund Me Diggin' Shoreline site to raise money from the public.

Derek points out that "in the end the money raised goes into hay fodder for the herd. So we've worked out a strong relationship. He brings the goats, and I raise the $. This year we're actively advertising the events"

So far this year, the project has received some strong donations, including local businesses Dunn Lumber, and West Highland Dental, and many individuals such as Larry Monger. Larry and his late wife Jeanne were among the first to step up to clear blackberry vines from the site.

The goats were able to work through the pandemic, so progress continued.

The site has been literally transformed from a spooky urban jungle that appeared impenetrable (but wasn't if you were determined to setup camp hidden in the weeds).

The goats cost $500 a day and it usually takes six days a summer to keep the site clear. You can help by donating here.

The public is more than welcome to visit as the goats are at work. They are comfortable with people and dogs, but you might not be as attractive as a yummy mouthful of blackberry vines.

Midvale Gardens is directly across the street from the Aurora Park n' Ride where the Shoreline Farmers Market is held, also on Saturday.

Boardwalk for Kruckeberg Botanic Garden - Enhancing accessibility to experiences in nature

Thursday, August 10, 2023

You cannot click to learn more from this graphic, but the information is included in the article.

The Kruckeberg Boardwalk Project will soon be in progress to enhance your access to positive experiences in nature.

By Spring 2024, you'll be able to stroll along a 450 foot raised walkway through the beautiful tree canopy, offering unique views of the Garden. This will be the perfect way to smoothly transition to and from the three acres of the Lower Garden.

During construction from September 2023 to March 2024, we will be working on weekdays to bring this project to life. While there may be limited access to the south side of the parking lot and to select areas of the Garden, we plan to keep the open hours and days unchanged during construction.

City of Shoreline staff worked closely with Kruckeberg staff and the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Foundation Board of Directors to design a boardwalk that creates an accessible path from the upper to lower garden.

Extensive surveys of the site and geotechnical testing of the soil, along with obtaining arborist assessments ensure that the design has a light footprint with minimal impact to the current collection.

The final layout will include a six-foot wide path with a maximum height of twelve feet. There will also be an additional accessible ramp that ties into an existing trail.

Bins are full of cattails pulled from Echo Lake

Look what a few good volunteers can do!!!

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association project to remove invasive cattails from the beach at Echo Lake Park had a setback when everything shut down for the pandemic.

But work parties have resumed and the one on July 27, 2023 was extremely productive.

Five volunteers = 12 compost bins of invasive cattails pulled from Echo Lake!

It was slightly hazardous, though. The lake has become very popular for fishing so you need to be careful where you step. Fish hooks and fishing line were everywhere.

Thank you to volunteers Marla and Matt Tullio, Pat Deagan and Claudia Meadows, Manuele Meyer.

New volunteers can still get in on the fun. Cattail pulling parties are scheduled for
  • Saturday 10am-noon
    • Aug 5th
  • Thursday 4-6pm
    • Aug 17th
    • Aug 31st
There are two kinds of cattails, so you don't have to pull every cattail in the lake. Meet by the beach in Echo Lake Park at N 200th and Ashworth Ave N and be prepared to get in the water.

Rotary members have spent many hours working in the pollinator garden

"We are working with Rotary groups both locally and around the country to build this project. The primary goal is to build a healthy bee corridor from Eastern to Western Washington and also to provide education to the community."
