Fire Wednesday in Northcrest Park reported by a runner

Friday, July 21, 2023

A fire Wednesday July 19, 2023 in Northcrest Park (827 NE 170th St, Shoreline, WA 98155) in the Ridgecrest neighborhood of Shoreline was apparently started by fireworks.

Fortunately, it was spotted almost immediately by neighbor Christopher Webb whose running route goes through the park. He called 911 and then stayed to direct Shoreline Fire Department to the location. He observed their work, took a photo -- and then continued his run!

The fire was located south of the play equipment.

Because of the immediate reporting, the fire was quickly extinguished.

Update: Runner / photographer Christopher Webb was the hero of the day.

North City Neighborhood Association meets on Sunday at the Pump Station mini-park

Saturday, June 24, 2023

The City of Shoreline recently completed the reservoir lid on Pump Station 26. Located on the west side of 10th Ave NE, a few hundred feet south of NE 185th St, it's a great little park and gives us an excuse to celebrate the start of summer!

Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 1 - 3pm.

Join the North City Neighborhood Association (NCNA) to meet your neighbors. Learn about our plans for summer and beyond. We'll have Otter Pops for the young and young at heart.

John Featherstone and Christie Lovelace, Shoreline City staff, will be there to answer questions about the Pump Station upgrades and stormwater management.

The space was formerly a large, open retention pond which collected water runoff from the surrounding neighborhood. Now it's a space that the NCNA can use for gatherings.

This is part of the regular maintenance work for playgrounds and ensures the long life of the rubber pad underneath.

Please do not use the playground equipment or walk on the rubber surface until we have removed the closed signs.
The new coating needs time to cure before it can be used.

Follow up to trees cut down near RB Saltwater Park

Friday, June 9, 2023

One lone tree left on 20th NE

Representatives of Save Shoreline Trees met with Rachael Markle, Director of Planning, and Kevin Bagwell, Associate Planner, on June 8, 2023 regarding the trees which stood near the entrance of Richmond Beach Saltwater Park. (see previous article)
Per Shoreline Municipal Code (“code”) and confirmed by the City, the owner did have the right to cut down the two trees, as it was determined that they were on his private property.

However, due to inaccurate information and a mistaken removal, the owner has to pay for a tree removal permit ($239) and an additional $239 penalty. The owner must also plant three replacement trees for each tree removed -- six trees -- within 180 days.

Also per code, this owner, or a future buyer, cannot remove the third tree which is Tree #231, a Douglas fir 24.3” DBH, until there is another tree established on the property that is 6” DBH.

Per code, a property owner may cut down 3 trees per 7200 sf, and 1 tree each additional 7200 sf, every 36 months, no replacement trees required. Code also states that 24" DBH trees and larger do require a tree removal permit ($239/lot) and tree replacements as specified in the code.
Statement from Save Shoreline Trees:

The Richmond Beach community is disappointed. The Pacific madrone and Douglas fir cut down will be sorely missed by residents and visitors who admired their natural beauty and all the benefits they provided.

The three trees were a community themselves, and now there is one solo tree remaining. They anchored the NW corner at 20th Ave NW and NW 190th St for a hundred years. Sometimes, there are reasons to not cut down trees even if code permits their removal.

Birds of Ronald Bog

Thursday, June 8, 2023

Photos by Kristine Tsujikawa at Ronald Bog

Kristine Tsujikawa spent some time observing and photographing the birds at Ronald Bog.

Oddly, reports from both Ronald Bog and Bitter Lake say there are no goslings this year. Even the goose pair that took over the new eagles nest at Ronald Bog and drove off the eagles (with help from a flock of crows) abandoned the nest and had no offspring.

Volunteers spruce up the Denmore Pathway on Saturday morning

Volunteers at the Densmore Pathway
Close to a dozen volunteers came to the Densmore Pathway on Saturday morning, May 20, 2023 to pull weeds and plant a few flowers and shrubs in the planting beds along the path.

They worked along the entire block of the Pathway.

Leader Marla Tullio said "We all were pretty much spread out working in areas East, West and in between!"

Shoreline Walks Leader Donna came through the Pathway with a very large group on her "Echo Lake Church Walk" so the timing was good to have the Pathway looking its best.

"They were all full of smiles and thank yous as they passed us
The heron concentrates on the fish, oblivious to the volunteer weeding his pond

The Densmore Pathway is a Shoreline Right of Way that neighbors turned into an award-winning park. It runs between Densmore and Ashworth and would be N 188th if it were an actual street.

On the Ashworth entrance there is a Little Free Library, a park bench, and an enclosed bulletin board. The Densmore entrance has a wider space and is the location for National Night Out gatherings.

Art adorns the pathway. Fish swim through the grasses as a heron stands by waiting for dinner. A giant dragonfly floats overhead.

Horizon View Park in the sunshine

Saturday, May 13, 2023

Horizon View Park is atop a high hill north of Town Center in Lake Forest Park. Address: 19845-20099 47th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

The park includes a large, covered water reservoir for Seattle Public Utilities.

Located at the highest point in Lake Forest Park, Horizon View Park has meadows and fields for active recreation and remote areas for quiet contemplation.

One paved pathway wanders through a wooded natural area. Another wraps around the reservoir of City of Seattle that is within the 8.4 acre park.

The park is a great place to walk your dog, go for a jog, have a picnic, meet up with your team, take your toddler on a pretend train ride or play on the park‘s climbing structure.

Horizon View was originally a Nike missile site, It became a park and reservoir after being decommissioned in 1964.

A railroad museum, once located nearby, gave the park its nickname "Choo-Choo Park." Though the museum no longer exists, the playground still has a play train.

The PROSA Plan will guide our decisions about:
  • Buying land for parks and natural areas
  • Developing new recreation facilities
  • Offering recreation and cultural programs, events
  • How best to maintain the parks, natural spaces and facilities
  • Where and what public art should look like in our community

We are hosting two virtual open houses on Monday, May 15. Meeting content will be the same, but we’re offering different times of day so you have more options to join us.

Ivy Out at South Woods on Saturday May 6, 2023

Friday, May 5, 2023

Invasive English ivy strangling a tree in South Woods.
Come to an IvyOut,
an Ivy Removal Project
at South Woods Park

Saturday, May 6, 2023
10 am to 2 pm

The term "Ivy Out" originally began as "Ivy O.U.T." (Ivy Off Urban Trees) by the No Ivy League in Portland.

The first Ivy O.U.T. program was at Seward Park in Seattle and was a collaboration between Washington Native Plant Society and Seattle Parks.

Our goal is to rid the trees of English Ivy, Hedera Hibernica, a high-climbing, invasive evergreen vine.

We use a technique called "lifesaver." This involves stripping a two or three foot band of ivy, all the way around the lower trunk of the tree.

Then we clear the ivy from the ground in a circle around the base of the tree. This technique makes the ivy in the upper reaches of the tree die and thwarts ivy's re-growth up the tree.

English Ivy can outcompete native habitat and it inhibits regeneration of the understory. Climbing stems exude a glue-like substance producing small rootlets that secure the vine to the tree. That is why ivy vines can to attach to almost any surface

Ample parking is available in the Shorecrest High School lot at 25th Avenue NE and NE 153rd Street.

Come with your friends and enjoy the camaraderie with other neighborhood volunteers. Meet at the information tent set up at the platform alongside the main path.

Bring gloves, a shovel, a tarp, loppers, hand clippers, and a reusable water bottle. Join the action for as long as you have time to give. We welcome you!

The next work party is Saturday, June 3rd.
