The City of Shoreline is now accepting applications for four volunteers to serve on the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services/Tree (PRCS/Tree) Board

Three vacancies are for full four-year terms, and one vacancy will be completing a term ending in March 2025. PRCS/Tree Board members must live, work, or own property in Shoreline. The City Council appoints the PRCS/Tree Board members.

The PRCS/Tree Board advises the City Council and City staff on a variety of issues related to parks, recreation, public art, and trees on public property.

Topics may include park operation and design; programs and events; property acquisition; arts opportunities; and development of planning documents, rules, or regulations.

The PRCS/Tree Board consists of seven adult members and two non-voting youth members and meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from January through October and the first Thursday in December from 7:00 to 9:00pm. The PRCS/Tree Board currently holds meetings using a hybrid format allowing for either in-person or online attendance.

If you are interested in applying, you must complete a Shoreline Community Services Application. The City Clerk’s office must receive your completed application no later than 5:00pm on February 10, 2023.

MLK Day of Service work party at North City Park Monday

Wednesday, January 11, 2023

Join other volunteers to lay down mulch on newly planted areas, or, help build the small trail through an area designated as an Interpretive woodland garden, or survey the four acre park for recent storm damage, freeing our young native plants from fallen limbs.

North City Park 19201 10th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155

MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

On Monday, January 16, you are invited to join us in North City Park from 10am to 1pm to continue our volunteer community effort to make this the best Family Friendly Forest in North City!!

On this day we would like to form into teams to either
  • Lay down mulch on newly planted areas, or
  • help build the small trail through an area designated as an Interpretive woodland garden, or
  • survey the 4 acre park for recent storm damage, freeing our young native plants from fallen limbs.

The MLK Day of Service has grown during the last quarter-century and its impact has increased as more Americans embrace the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving communities. Come to North City Park and become a part of this tradition!

Dress for the weather. Bring work gloves if you have them (we have some to lend you if you don't have them). We'll have all the other tools you'll need.

We will have water to drink but if you are planning on being in the Park for the full three hours you may want to bring a snack. There are no restroom facilities in the Park. We can direct you to the closest public facility.

Sign in at the canopy at the Park entrance and we'll get you connected with a work team of your choice! Park along the park fence line on 10th Ave NE or in the North City School Parking lot. North City Park is located at 19201 10th Avenue NE Shoreline.

Advance sign up is appreciated. North City Park/ GreenShoreline

$6million shortfall for Shoreline park improvements - public asked to weigh in on priorities

Saturday, January 7, 2023

Concept design for Hillwood Park
"The concept designs have undergone a "basis of design" review. The basis of design takes into consideration actual site conditions, such as location of trees and critical areas. During this phase, the design team adjusts proposed elements to better match the nature and size of the park, such as making adjustments to looped trails, adjusting the size of some park elements, and locating features to work with the actual topography of each site." From the December 12, 2021 staff report.

Shoreline voters approved a parks bond for major improvements to eight parks: Briarcrest Park, Brugger’s Bog Park, Hillwood Park, Richmond Highlands Park, Ridgecrest Park, James Keough Park, Shoreview Park and Kruckeberg Botanic Gardens.

As the specific design projects began and after conducting a "basis of design" and costing estimates, it was determined that there was a significant budget shortfall of $6.3 million.

The reason for the shortfall is the unprecedented inflation rates that have impacted the cost of almost everything and an underestimate in the cost of accessibility improvements at Kruckeberg Botanic Garden.

Addressing the $6.3 million shortfall requires a "reduction of scope," and reallocation of funds between budget categories.

To make up for the $6.3 million shortfall, the City will reallocate $3.4M from Parks Acquisitions, eliminate the renovation of Shoreview Park field ($1.2M), and contribute an additional $1.7M from the general fund.

More information in the staff report prepared for the December 12, 2022 city council meeting.

The city is very interested in hearing from citizens as far as their priorities for these parks. They have created an "open house" survey for the Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Arts (PROSA) Plan.

This plan provides a 20-year vision and framework that will help decide how city money will be spent and what services will be offered.

Shoreline Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Arts Plan Online Open House - citizen feedback requested

Friday, December 2, 2022

The City of Shoreline launched an online open house as part of the process to update the Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Arts (PROSA) Plan, which must be done every six years.

Through the development of the PROSA Plan, we will better understand community needs and wants. The Plan will establish a long-term vision that will help guide how money will be spent and what services the City will offer for the next six years.

This latest edition will merge the Public Arts Plan with the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan. These plans were last updated in 2017. Since that time, the city has grown and changed. To ensure community priorities are truly reflected in decisions, we are looking to create opportunities for inclusive participation throughout the planning process.

The PROSA Plan will reflect the voices of Shoreline community members and support the vision of Shoreline as a thriving, welcoming city where people of all ages, cultures, and economic backgrounds love to live, work, and play, and most of all, to call home. support

The PROSA Plan guides decisions about:
  • Buying land for parks and natural areas
  • Developing new recreation facilities
  • Offering recreation and cultural programs and events
  • How best to maintain the parks, natural spaces, and facilities
  • Where and what public art should look like in our community

The online open house provides an opportunity for you to learn about the plan update, share your comments and ideas on an interactive map, and take a community survey.

We expect to have a draft plan available for public review in summer 2023. The PROSA Plan must be adopted by the Shoreline City Council, which is expected to consider the draft plan in late 2023.

Shoreline PROSA Plan online open house
  • When: Now through Friday, Jan. 27
  • Where: https://shorelineparks.infocommunity.org/
  • Details: When you visit the website, you will learn about the PROSA Plan and you can provide your ideas and input to aid the City in its development of the 2024-2030 PROSA Plan.

Play structure open in Echo Lake Park

Play structure at Echo Lake Park
By Diane Hettrick

One of the most popular play structures in the City of Shoreline is open for business in Echo Lake Park after being destroyed in an arson fire in April 2022 (see previous article)

Repairs had to wait on the police investigation and insurance claim. Then the parts were not stock and would have to be manufactured. It was more cost effective to purchase a completely new structure.

In the duration, the area was cordoned off with orange netting.

The park is on the Interurban Trail at N 200th and Ashworth Ave N and is popular year round, both with nearby families and with families walking the Interurban Trail. It was the last park refurbished in the previous parks bond.

Once the new structure was received, it took only a few days to assemble it. Barbara Jeanne the turtle is back, placed so she can watch the kids at play.

The structure is specially designed for very young children and has nearby benches for the adults.

Thanks to the City and the Parks Department for staying on top of this

Volunteering: One summer's work in Shoreline Park

Starting point: August 21, 2022

Two dedicated volunteers, Sara and Cristin, have been spearheading a project to remove blackberries and other invasive plants from Shoreline Park.

Major progress: September 18, 2022

The park, which stretches between 1st and 3rd NE, just north of the Shoreline Center, has always been kept trimmed by the Shoreline Parks department, but the vegetation around the trees is primarily blackberry vines.

November 20, 2022

Sara, Crisin and their family, friends, and neighbors have been working on the park all summer, with dramatic results, as you can tell by the photos.

November 20, 2022
A dramatic difference.

They are through for the year but will be resuming work next year. If you are interested in helping, the work parties will be listed on the Green Shoreline Partnership website or you can contact the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association at ELNABoard@gmail.com or check the ELNA Facebook page for notices.
