Green Shoreline Day - work parties in five Shoreline parks Saturday October 29

Monday, October 24, 2022

Green Shoreline Partnership, Forterra, and the City of Shoreline are hosting Green Shoreline Day on Saturday, October 29, 2022 from 9:00am to 12:00pm to help restore urban parks in Shoreline.

Volunteers are needed to plant trees, remove invasive weeds, and provide a helping hand to our green spaces. The event is open to people of all ages and features fun activities such as planting native trees and shrubs, removing colonizing weeds, and a raffle.

Green Shoreline Day will host five events at the following locations, 9am to 12pm: Brugger’s Bog, Hamlin Park, North City Park, Paramount Open Space, and Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.

Green City Partnerships and its Green City Days bring together local nonprofits, community members, and city partners who are dedicated to the region’s forested parks, natural areas, and communities. It’s a true community effort. This fall marks 17 years of outstanding service.

“Shoreline residents care deeply about their urban forests and it shows through the thousands of hours of volunteer work they have put in helping to restore and maintain our parks and open spaces,” stated Shoreline Mayor Keith Scully.
“They know that a healthy urban forest is essential to a healthy environment and a healthy community. The Green Cities Partnership is a great opportunity to join a region-wide effort to save and preserve our urban forests.”

The value of this volunteer work is immeasurable – communities are working together to restore our local urban forests that clean the air, buffer noise and retain water to reduce the impacts of flooding. Forests also provide important habitat for wildlife and make outdoor recreation more accessible.

For an up-to-date list of all Green Shoreline Day locations and to register for festivities, visit greenshoreline.org

For more information contact Ash Lehto at greenshoreline@forterra.org.

Working cooperatively with people and nature, Forterra drives land stewardship, management and planning; innovative programs and policies; farming and forestry approaches; community ownership opportunities; and development solutions. Visit Forterra.org

About Green City Partnerships

In 2004, natural areas around Seattle were infested with invasive plants, which prevented a new generation of trees from growing. Forterra and the City of Seattle recognized an opportunity to restore and maintain Seattle’s 2,500 acres of forested parkland with the help of the community.

From there, a 20-year strategic plan was developed and the first Green City Partnership began. Today, there are 14 cities and one county involved.

Green City Partnerships help urban communities in the Puget Sound region effectively enhance and care for their natural open spaces and tree canopy.

Reception honors Stewardship Leader Mamie Bolender

Saturday, October 15, 2022

A new plaque honors volunteer Mamie Bolender

Story and photos by Kim Josund

On a lovely autumn afternoon at Grace Cole Nature Park, a large group of people gathered to witness the unveiling of a new plaque honoring volunteer Mamie Bolender.

An appreciative crowd attended the reception

Mamie, now in her 90s, is a founding member of the LFP Stewardship Foundation and oversaw the volunteer restoration of the park for decades, before stepping down just a few years ago.

Saving the land that is now Grace Cole Nature Park (map link) was the very first project for the LFP Stewardship Foundation, which formed back in 1998 in Mamie’s living room.

During that long fight to protect the wetlands and steep forested slopes from becoming a housing development, Mamie’s strong leadership brought together neighbors and support from City, County and State elected officials.

Mamie shares some of the history of her advocacy

Mamie wrote grants for acquisition, and later, wrote and managed grants for restoration work. In those early years, the Stewardship Foundation was dubbed “a scrappy band of neighbors” a.k.a. “Mamie’s Gang.” Once the land became a public park, Mamie stepped up to lead regular volunteer work parties to create what we all enjoy today at the Nature Park.

Mamie has always had the wisdom and the fortitude to know that partnering with Mother Nature is always a good investment; that big things can happen with persistent advocacy for what you know is right. Mamie is known for her way of speaking up, kindly, asking questions, countering with gentle logic to make her point.

She is reliably the definition of a good neighbor. She was out in the park pulling ivy and blackberry, putting native plants in the ground, and teaching others how to do it, until well into her 80s. Her steadfast determination is an inspiration to all, building a strong base of support for stewardship in Lake Forest Park, which continues today.

Mamie’s impact on Lake Forest Park goes well beyond the protection and restoration of Grace Cole Nature Park. She has mentored students from Shorecrest high school on trail building and habitat restoration. Mamie coordinated with Volunteers for Outdoor Washington, Friends of Cedar River Watershed, Adopt-A-Stream and other groups to help improve the park.

She studied environmental issues such as the City Comprehensive Plan, Sensitive Area Ordinances, and the Urban Tree Management Plan, strengthening her advocacy for the natural resources of our watersheds.

In addition to the Stewardship Foundation, where she served as Treasurer, Vice President and Co-President, Mamie was active for many years in planning the LFP Secret Gardens Tour, and guided the Community Wildlife Habitat certification through the National Wildlife Federation with Libby Fiene. Mamie also served on several City Commissions and Boards over the years.

Mamie and Chuck Bolender, son-in-law and daughter

Mamie attended the September 25th reception with her husband Chuck, and her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed visiting with long time friends and supporters of the Stewardship Foundation, including a few members of the original “Mamie’s Gang.”

Jean Reid, Mamie Bolender, Jean Robbins

LFPSF founding Board member, Dr. Jean Reid, spoke about Mamie’s legacy and LFP Mayor Jeff Johnson thanked Mamie.

Jim Mead with Mamie Bolender

Current volunteer park restoration leader Jim Mead (a neighbor of Mamie’s recruited by her) had Mamie unveil the plaque which is mounted atop the park kiosk. Mamie shared some memories of work to save the park, and appreciation to those who have joined to help the cause.

Now whenever Mamie passes by the Nature Park, she can see that plaque as a heartfelt THANK YOU for her advocacy and leadership over the years!

Volunteer work parties continue monthly at Grace Cole Nature Park on the third Saturday from 9am -12noon. More information available on the Stewardship Foundation website at lfpsf.org

Grace Cole Nature Park is located at 16735 30th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

Newly refurbished Log Boom Park in Kenmore has something for everyone

Thursday, September 1, 2022

All photos by Steven H. Robinson

Kenmore, WA - Log Boom Park reopened to the public after a year of renovations on the 1.5-acre Waterfront Access and Viewing Project. The project improves waterfront access to Lake Washington while restoring native vegetation for wildlife habitat.

The 3.9 acre park features a range of new amenities including a new sandy beach and lake access area, water access for hand-powered watercraft, a picnic shelter, a boat rental building, public artworks including the signature “Flume” sculpture by Jennifer Dixon, seating, and an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible concrete path promenade.

A local concessionaire, WhatsSup Stand Up Paddle and Surf, will also be on site this summer renting hand-powered watercraft such as kayaks and paddleboards.

Photographer Steve Robinson says "The kayak rental is run by the same person as the rental at Bothell Landing. People can rent a kayak in Bothell and paddle down the river to Kenmore. Then pick up a bicycle and go back to Bothell on the Burke Gilman Trail. This makes for a pretty adventure."

Bicyclists are to dismount and dogs to be on leash

Kenmore Mayor Nigel Herbig remarked that "Residents and visitors to Kenmore will have a much-improved experience when they dip their toes in the sand, launch their kayak, or take in a sunset. I am especially proud of the planning and care taken to preserve, protect and restore the natural habitat along Kenmore's shoreline."

New shrubs, trees protected by rail fencing.

The project includes environmental enhancements such as protection of one acre of on-site wetlands from public access, improvements to aquatic habitat, removal of invasive plant species, and riparian and upland plantings of native vegetation. The work resulted in 106 new trees and over 1,000 new shrubs being planted within the project site.

Sculpture and lake view
"We want to thank the Kenmore community for their support of this project and their patience as we have awaited project completion", said City of Kenmore Project Manager Maureen Colaizzi. We are so excited to share this beautiful new outdoor space with the public."

View of the park from across the lake

Maureen Colaizzi was previously employed by the City of Shoreline Parks department, and among other projects, designed Echo Lake Park.

The park is a pleasant stop off for bicyclists on the Burke Gilman Trail. Parking is about two city blocks from the beach and kayak rental.

Log Boom Park is in Kenmore, at the head of Lake Washington. The address is 17415 61st Ave NE, Kenmore, WA 98028. The Burke Gilman Trail runs through the middle of the park and Bothell Way is within view.

Caring for South Woods Saturday, September 10, 2022

Caring for South Woods
Saturday, September 10, 2022
10:00am to 2:00pm

We invite you to come be in the woods and enjoy the community comradery as we work to refurbish the area where one of the navy buildings had been. In 2005 the Shoreline School District authorized that the woods be designated as an educational environmental park. In 2006, before becoming a city park, the land belonged to the Shoreline School District, the Shoreline Water District and the City of Shoreline.

Now the woods is a unique mature lowland forest rarely found in an urban setting. Amid the trees of South Woods it is easy to be mindful of how the entire forest breathes. The air, water and soil breathe; the functions of respiration and photosynthesis take place.

The role of the respiratory system in humans is to breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. This is known as respiration. The cells of our body use oxygen to perform functions that keep us alive. The waste product created by our cells once they have performed these functions is carbon dioxide which we breathe out.

Just like humans, trees also breathe. But, while we as humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, trees do the opposite. Their leaves pull in carbon dioxide, water, and energy from the sun to turn into sugars that feed the tree. This process, known as photosynthesis, emits the oxygen that humans need to breathe.

The restoration site at South Woods is located adjacent to Shorecrest High School at 15343 25th Avenue NE, which makes it an ideal outdoor classroom. Enter the parking lot south of the school and meet at the tent set up at the platform on the main path that bisects the woods.

Bring gloves, tarp, loppers, hand clippers, shovels, and share this invitation with neighbors and friends. Shoreline Park maintenance employees will be on hand to help. For questions, call or contact Bettelinn, bettelinn@hotmail.com

Attention hikers: Take ample water, a water filter, and electrolytes

Pacific Crest Trail in Washington
The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office recently related a story about rescuing dehydrated hikers from the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and Kittitas County Search and Rescue have responded to three medical emergencies from backcountry hikers in the last two days, all related to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

One subject was airlifted out of the Deep Lake area after a rescue ground team reached him and found him unable to walk or even ride a horse due to severe dehydration.

Two others had to be provided emergency care in the field, including IV fluids, before they could walk out with the help of ground teams to get full medical care. All three were experienced hikers in good physical condition.

August in Kittitas County sees hundreds of northbound Pacific Crest Trail hikers and other backcountry users in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

In the kind of extreme weather in our near-future forecast, all backcountry users need to have ample water (and a water filter) and electrolytes to mitigate the heat.

Hiking up switchback trails and over passes in 90+ degree heat will deplete even the toughest of hikers. Heat-related illness and emergency can come on very suddenly and can be deadly.
