Travels with Charlie: Fishin’ from Log Boom Pier

Monday, September 16, 2024

Charlie and I headed to Lake Washington for an afternoon walk on this Beautiful Day.

Lots more folks and kids Fishin’ from Log Boom Pier than we usually see. All the benches and several prime spots were occupied mostly by anglers.

“Catch anything?” I asked one Dad and 2 Youngsters as they were leaving.
He replied: "We each caught a couple of small bass that we gave away for someone to have fish dinner.”
Nice...

We agreed that any day fishing is a good day, especially on a gorgeous day like this one.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Call for Artists for new public art at Horizon View Park

Thursday, September 12, 2024

Horizon View Park in Lake Forest Park

The LFP Garden Tour and City of LFP have put out a call for Artists (RFQ) for new public art at Horizon View Park.

The selected artist(s) will create a free-standing artwork to be located in an outdoor area visible to motorists, pedestrians and park users.

The piece will reference the history and location of the area and be in harmony with its surroundings. It may be abstract or traditional, and possibly functional. It will be composed of materials suitable for long-term outdoor display/use and easy to maintain. The artwork must be new work created for this site.

The sculpture will most likely be located in an area near the entrance and/or play ground at Horizon View Park which is located at the highest point in Lake Forest Park.

This area has mounding terrain and would be enhanced by a creative bench or other interactive element.

The park provides an opportunity to contemplate the night sky, surrounding mountains and territorial landscape. Amenities for active use of Horizon View Park include a soccer field, tennis court, half-court basketball, walking paths around a reservoir and through a wooded area, picnic tables, and a playground.

Horizon View Park is located in a residential neighborhood and is enjoyed by all ages and abilities. While there are several pieces of public art in the Town Center/City Hall area of LFP, this will be the first public art installation in the Horizon View Park neighborhood.

The full RFQ can be seen here

Questions can be directed to publicartlfpgardentour@gmail.com

Volunteers spread mulch at Echo Lake Park

Thursday, August 29, 2024

Volunteers at Echo Lake Park

Many thanks to everyone who came out and spread mulch on Tuesday.

Special thanks to Wendi Valle and her staff, Zach, Brendan and Chelsea, from State Farm Insurance, as well as Paul, Pat and Edith.

We got rid of almost all of the mulch pile, and the plants approve. We also seemed to find a spot where a coyote maybe comes to enjoy their prey. Last time it was a dead crow; this time it was what looked like an otter skull and part of its pelt. I'm not sure if there's another animal around here that would do that.

Also a reminder for lakeside dwellers -- as landscapers and home owners begin fall clean up: please do not blow yard debris into the lake. This releases phosphorus, which feeds the algae blooms. Please place into yard waste, so it can be safely taken away and composted.

Public hearing in Lake Forest Park regarding acquisition of forested land adjacent to Five Acre Woods

Thursday, August 22, 2024

Property adjacent to Five Acre Woods available for purchase
by City of Lake Forest Park
The City of Lake Forest Park invites the public to provide their comments at the upcoming Special City Council Meeting on August 29, 2024.

The primary agenda item for this meeting is the consideration of Resolution 24-1962, which involves approving the Purchase and Sale Agreement for acquiring property located at 19001 40th Place.

The agenda for the meeting can be found here.

This 2.43-acre property, located adjacent to Five Acre Woods Park, offers a unique opportunity to preserve a significant urban forest area.

Purchasing and preserving this property will provide several benefits, including:
  • Expansion of Green Space: The acquisition would expand Five Acre Woods Park, providing more recreational space and enhancing public access to nature.
  • Environmental Preservation: The heavily treed property consists of a second-growth forest, which contributes to local biodiversity, supports wildlife habitats, and helps maintain an ecological balance within the urban environment.
  • Sustainable Development: By preserving the property as a natural area, the City can ensure that the land is not developed by private interests, thereby maintaining the community's character and integrity.
  • Community Health and Well-being: Increased access to natural spaces has been shown to improve mental and physical health, making this acquisition a valuable investment in the well-being of Lake Forest Park residents.
We encourage all community members to attend the meeting and share their thoughts on this significant opportunity to preserve and expand our parkland. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of our community spaces.

Meeting Details:

Date: August 29, 2024
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: City Hall, 17425 Ballinger Way NE

Travels with Charlie: Invasive Blackberries are being removed

Wednesday, August 21, 2024

The recent hot weather had sent us to more shaded spots for our wanderings. Charlie and I had a chance to visit Horizon View Park on this perfect afternoon.. Over the last couple of weeks, fantastic progress in the park!

A Great Surprise as we walked the path above the Playfield…
The massive amounts of Invasive Blackberries are being removed. These were huge impenetrable patches.

This area was covered 6 to 8 feet high. I always picked a few ripe summer berries when we walked by, but no way you could walk into it to pick more.

The Blackberry vines had completely taken over the shoulder areas that surround part of the court. It’s off to the right.

No way anyone, other than a rabbit, could get thru any of it. Now look. Charlie is checking it out.

This area was totally inaccessible. Only that green path around the court wasn’t blackberry territory.

Heading away from the court… More Blackberry bushes have been removed as you walk by the court.

And, wandering along, a huge area down the slope from the path is being cleared.

Next comes the hard part… Keeping the Blackberries from coming back over the next few seasons.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

State Parks updating camping, moorage fees

Sunday, August 11, 2024

Deception Pass photo by Wayne Pridemore

OLYMPIA – Aug. 8, 2024 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is updating its camping and moorage fees for 2025 to support its operations amid inflation impacts and rising costs.

The camping fee changes will take effect on May 15, 2025, and the moorage fee changes will take effect Jan. 1, 2025. Because visitors can make reservations up to nine months in advance, on Aug. 15, 2024, campers will see the new fees reflected when they make reservations for May 15, 2025, and beyond.

Under the new fee rates, standard campsite costs will increase between $3 to $5, partial utility campsite will increase $5 to $6 and full-utility sites will increase $6. This proposal does not change primitive site fees, which would remain $12, or roofed accommodation fees, which vary.

Daily watercraft launching fees will increase to a flat rate of $7, daily moorage per foot charges will increase to $1, daily moorage minimums and buoy moorage will increase to $23, annual moorage per foot charges will increase to $7 and annual moorage minimums will increase to $80.

The proposed change was presented at the April 10 work session held by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. Parks Director Diana Dupuis approved the proposal on April 29.

Understanding finances impact equitable access to the outdoors, the agency takes any fee increase very seriously. Since the last camping fee change, inflation has increased by more than 20 percent, while infrastructure maintenance needs have also increased. From fiscal year 2019 to fiscal year 2023, the agency’s utility costs increased by 37 percent.

Reduced-rate camping is provided to those eligible through five discount pass programs, equating to roughly 17 percent of the value of the camping we provide.

Background

Parks manages more than 6,400 campsites and 40 marine parks across the state, as well as more than 8,500 feet of moorage in Puget Sound. The agency is funded from a mix of state revenue and user fees, with user fee revenue making up roughly two-thirds of its operating budget. Parks depends on visitor fees to maintain camping and moorage infrastructure and provide a high level of customer service and recreational access.
