Family Law Workshop Series: Let’s Talk About Parents and Parenting Plans

Monday, April 22, 2019

Family Law Workshop Series: Let’s Talk About Parents and Parenting Plans

Sunday, 4/28/2019 from 12:00pm - 1:00pm at the Shoreline Library Large Meeting Room, 345 NE 175th St, Shoreline 98133.

This workshop is the last in a four part series of workshops on family law offered by KCLS and the King County Law Library.

Registration required. Six spaces remain. Call the Shoreline Library at 206.362.7550 or register online for the workshop.

Let's Talk about Parents and Parenting Plans. When couples with children separate, they often need a parenting plan to spell out where the children reside, how parents make decisions about their children, and who pays for what. If a parent isn't listed on the birth certificate, sometimes the legal parents must be decided before the parenting plan or child support can be ordered. Find out more in this one-hour focus class.

Understanding Screen Time - Eastside CHADD Apr 23

Tuesday, April 2, 2019

Hilarie Cash, Ph.D.
Eastside CHADD: Tuesday, April 23, 2019, 7pm - 9pm: Hilarie Cash, Ph.D., “Understanding Screen Time”

Meetings are held at the Boys and Girls Club of Bellevue209 100th Ave NE, Bellevue 98004, 2nd floor
Park in the Bellevue Downtown Park Western Parking Lot

The increased reliance upon computers, large and small, has led to concerns about their pervasive role in our lives.

  • Is there a difference between in person communication and online communication?
  • What is FOMO and how does it affect sleep and mental health?
  • How does screen time affect cognitive, language, and emotional development of very young brains?
  • What effect do video games have upon developing brains?
  • Do parents need to set limits? Do kids need to set limits? Why?

Now that the World Health Organization has declared video gaming disorder a mental health condition, what is at stake in unlimited screen time?

Dr. Hilarie Cash is co-founder and Chief Clinical Officer for reSTART Life, PLLC, a residential program (first in the US or Canada) designed explicitly for adults and adolescents who are experiencing serious problems because of addiction to the Internet and video games.

She began her work in the emerging field of Internet addiction in the mid-90's. In 2008, she co-authored the book Video Games and Your Kids: How Parents Stay in Control

Dr. Cash is recognized as one of the nation's leading experts in the growing field of Internet and video game addiction. She is a public speaker, workshop presenter and has appeared in well over 600 news reports about Internet addiction.

Positive Parenting

Thursday, July 26, 2018

Shoreline resident, school counselor, and private mental health therapist Cher Anderton has scheduled two events on August 14 and 23, 2018 to support parents and families.

As a parent, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the the transition to another school year.  We can forget that what matters most is raising kids with traits like a sense of humor, self-reliance, kindness, empathy, hard working and problem solving.
Many of us may not feel as though we have the tools and skills to model and teach these traits to our kids. Perhaps this is because we didn’t have positive parenting models as we grew up, we experienced trauma as a child or as an adult, or we are experiencing a lot of stress and have little energy to put towards our children and/or we may have a child with needs that are stretching us to the max!
Whatever the reason is for you to want/need more parenting tools in your toolbelt, this workshop will support you in your parenting adventure during this hectic time of returning to school.

Mar 29 Talking with Children about Race

Sunday, March 26, 2017

Wednesday, March 29 at 7 - 9pm at Shoreline Community CollegeMap, 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Recent research has shown that children have very complex understandings of differences and stereotypes. Far from being color-blind, most children are aware of how their own skin color is an advantage or disadvantage.

They also judge their peers based on stereotypes that adults might like to believe they are unaware of.

Because of this, it is important to give children anti-bias messages, through actions and words, to actively counter what they are witnessing in the world.

Ilsa Govan, M.A. is a co-founder of Cultures Connecting. She has more than fifteen years of experience as a classroom teacher and anti-racist community activist. Ilsa worked as an Equity and Race Specialist for Seattle Public Schools, addressing institutional racism in a large organization.

She has also served on the planning teams of the Seattle Race Conference and the White Privilege Conference. Ilsa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Western Washington University and her Master’s Degree in Bicultural Human Development from Pacific Oaks College Northwest.

Donations accepted at door - courtesy registration requested.
