Film: "Resilience" The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope

Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Shoreline Community Movie presents the award winning documentary film
“RESILIENCE”
THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS and THE SCIENCE OF HOPE

RESILIENCE: The Biology of Stress and The Science of Hope will be screened on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at 4pm, at the Shoreline Center Auditorium (north end of complex), 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline, Washington 98155 followed by a post-film panel discussion.

James Redford, son of Robert Redford and director of the award winning documentary, “Resilience”, helps us to see that there many families in diverse Communities who are unaware of adverse childhood experiences and the cycles kids are trapped in.

The good news is that outside efforts of teachers, therapists and social workers can help to break the cycle. Whether you’re a parent, teacher or neighbor, you are the external structure that helps create a positive, caring and nurturing environment.

"True resilience is not a matter of character or moral fiber," Redford said. "It's about finding the right ingredients to be successful in life."

Helping Boys Thrive® Summit

Friday, April 15, 2016

The Washington Association for Middle Level Education is proud to host the Helping Boys Thrive® Summit with Michael Gurian from The Gurian Institute at Shoreline Community College on Saturday, April 23 from 8:00 to 4:00pm.

This summit is a one day event that brings together professionals, parents, educators, and community stakeholders in the field of boys’ development.

In nearly every academic and behavioral marker, boys and young men are struggling. While some males get to the top of corporations and government quite well, millions of males are not thriving. In our own community, we have a great need to study and positively affect the developmental journey of our boys. We are seeing more and more boys who need our help, and want us to engage with them in successful ways.

The organizers of this summit are focusing the program on boys, but they believe this work is not just about boys — it is also about girls. They believe we are now in an era in which girls’ and women’s rights will not move to their next level of social success until we solve the issues boys face.

Michael Gurian, the father of two daughters, recently noted, “Our genders are utterly interdependent and the disturbing loss of our males is beginning to significantly harm our females as well.”

This summit is for parents, teachers, counselors, therapists, medical professionals, grandparents, law enforcement and corrections workers, youth service providers, early childhood providers, mentors, ministers and other faith professionals, and policy makers.

Some breakout sessions are targeted toward professionals and some to parents. All sessions provide evidence-based practical strategies that can be used tomorrow in homes, offices, schools, and other environments.

Lauren Potter

When professionals told Lauren that she “couldn’t” or “wouldn’t, she worked harder. Barriers put before her became a personal challenge to let people know what she was capable of.

Lauren is now thrilled to be able to use the public “voice” that Glee has given her, to speak out for other people with disabilities who may not have the same opportunities. She works on the Abilitypath.org campaign against bullying, as a World Games Ambassador for the Special Olympics and a spokesperson for the Best Buddies programs in their “End the Word” campaign.

Lauren also lends her name to national organizations, including the Arc, Down Syndrome Association and the AAPD. She has received numerous awards for her inclusion and diversity work.
