Follow the music to another piano sighting

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

Marc Weinberg reports, "As I approached the playfield at the Richmond Beach Library, I was excited to hear some great music from the piano by the front door. I was further surprised to see a rather young man generating so many tunes without any sheet music. He just switched from one to the other in an amazing stride. Jack exhibited wonderful talent in his selection of music."

Piano Time painting in process

Friday, July 19, 2013

Clarkia Cobb painting music and manadals
for Piano Time 2013

Slugs, lizards, anemones and more! Five newly-donated pianos for Piano Time 2013 are now in the painting site and the artists are hard at work.

This year’s concoctions include themes of tide pools, landscape and ferries, slugs, lizards and music mandalas.

You can watch the artists at work in the donated storefront at 1508 NE 179th Street in North City between the water store and the nail salon. They are there at various times but with just ten more days to complete their creations you’re apt to find at least someone painting when you stop by.

Thanks to families who donated beloved, but no longer needed pianos, Prosser Piano for the piano pick-up, delivery and tuning, to the property owner for donation of the painting space and to 4Culture for helping make this happen with an Arts Project award.

Help celebrate Piano Time on Arts al Fresco on Thursday, August 1st at Shoreline City Hall and the Park at Town Center from 6:00-8:30pm.

These five pianos, along with seven from last year, will be out in public places all of August for everyone to play. Maps with locations and information will be available on August 1st.
For more information contact Ros Bird, Shoreline Public Art Coordinator.

Call for pianos

“Street Pianos” to return to Shoreline

Do you know a piano that is well-loved but no longer in use and would love to be painted and played outdoors?  The City of Shoreline is planning its second annual Piano Time “street piano” event for August 2013.

Thanks to a generous grant from 4Culture, we are looking for five additional instruments to increase the musical opportunities in public, pedestrian-friendly locations. Visual artists will paint or otherwise decorate the pianos but they must be in reasonable musical shape and not need any major repairs.

Professional pianists will play at the Arts al Fresco opening on August 1st and the finale concert on August 28th. The rest of the month you and other passers-by may tickle the ivories. Back by popular demand, the goal of this project is the same: to enliven our summer environment with colorful sounds and sights.

If you know of a piano that might be just right for Piano Time, email Ros Bird, Public Art Coordinator, with the details and contact information or call 206-801-2661. Prosser Piano will help us check it out for suitability.

Save the Yellow Piano from the scrap heap

Thursday, November 8, 2012

This is a message from  the Werner Café Piano, the bright yellow instrument that was in the Park at Town Center throughout August:

Hello Shoreline agencies,

I am the bright yellow piano with paintings of café scenes and flowers that sat in the Park at Town Center across from Shoreline City Hall during August 2012 and I’m looking for a new home. Lots of people enjoyed playing me, although some were concerned about the sag and drag of my lower register, and I brought smiles to many faces.

The City has decided that I am not suitable musically for another outdoor August Piano Time event in 2013 so has de-accessioned me. That means that I can find another home in a Shoreline non-profit or other governmental agency where people might like to play me as I am.

I am currently sitting on the upper level of the City Hall Parking Garage, mostly covered in plastic while awaiting my fate. If you are accepted as my new owner you would need to pick me up and move me to your location. The City can arrange this through Prosser Piano for $75 at your expense or you can pick me up with volunteers and a truck with a lift.

If no one wants me by November 5th I will be discarded as scrap.

Please respond to Ros Bird, Public Art Coordinator at the City of Shoreline, if you are interested in having a cute, but tired piano at your facility. We could make beautiful music together!

Thanks,

The Werner Café Piano

Piano Time 2012 Performance August 26

Take a stroll on the Interurban Trail and wander over to the yellow piano on the red brick road to catch the next to last Piano Time performance.

Peter V Stevens, co-founder of the Seattle Pianist Collective, will be playing the Werner Café Piano, Kim Bateman, artist, from 1 – 2:30pm on Sunday, August 26th.

Stevens’ performance will include music for kids, contemporary, classical and original compositions. Stay for a bit or the whole time. Bring a blanket or chair or lie on the grass. Or get up and dance to the music.

The piano is located in the Park at Town Center, just north of the Walgreens at N 175th between Aurora and Midvale Ave N.

While you’re on the trail remember to check out the Sculpture Stroll artwork. Ten significant sculptures are on view in the Park along the brick road and in the lawn at City Hall. A Sculpture Stroll map and a Piano Time map with images and locations are on the City’s website.

The pianos will be moved to City Hall for storage on August 29th. The final Piano Time concert is that evening at 6pm with Eric “Two Scoops” Moore and his combo playing the City Hall grand piano, Shoreline Rocks by Kelly Lyles.

Piano Time is a City of Shoreline project, funded in part by a grant from 4Culture and the collaboration of Prosser Piano and other area businesses.

Eric Two Scoops Moore plays Piano Time 2012 Finale Performance August 29th

Thursday, August 23, 2012

August is on the wane, the days are getting shorter, but Piano Time 2012 will have a rockin’ finale concert on Wednesday, August 29th, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Kelly Lyles’ Shoreline Rocks piano at Shoreline City Hall will be played by Eric “Two Scoops” Moore joined by his Two Scoops Combo.

Boogie Piano Man Eric "Two Scoops" Moore writes and sings of joy, pathos, hunger and overconsumption, in the Blues tradition of devilish double entendre. Mix baritone vocals, honkin' sax, groovin' bass, Big Easy rhythm and you have the recipe for BIG FUN for all ages!

Two Scoops won the 2011 Best Blues Piano/Keyboard award from the Washington Blues Society.  But, according to The Two Scoops website, one of his fans wrote, “Always such a treat. Real music, so warm, accessible, comical, and uplifting, almost makes ya wonder why they call it the Blues!”

Two Scoops in Tacoma
Come on out to Shoreline City Hall for the final August celebration.  Bring your picnic, your family and friends and enjoy some lively sounds.

This has been quite a month of music around Shoreline with eight pianos played at all hours by young and old, novices and accomplished performers.  Seven pianos will now go into storage with the City Hall grand remaining in the lobby for occasional concerts to brighten those sometimes gray days.

Piano Time is a City of Shoreline project, funded in part by a grant from 4Culture and the collaboration of Prosser Piano and other area businesses.

Painted pianos are a popular addition to the local scene

James Gierke and Octavia
By Diane Hettrick

The Painted Pianos are wildly popular in Shoreline.

James Gierke and the Shorewood Band found the octopus at Haggen Northwest Fresh store (formerly TOP Foods) and entertained a large crowd that came out for the grand opening of the new store concept on August 3rd.

Octavia Rises, by Shoreline artists Ann Blanch, Lynn Turnblom, and Sue Wallace.

This was just a portion of a Shorewood band performance and hot dog sale to raise money for a concert in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Norinka Federow plays the piano at Gateway Plaza

Norinka Federow plays the piano called Keyboard Skydance, by artist Jennifer Carroll, at Gateway Plaza. She is typical of the dozens of individuals who stop to play for a while. Each piano has a notebook where people can record their thoughts about the experience.

On the hottest day of the year, a young man was playing this piano in the direct sun, while his family gathered around and took his photo. At the Market Fresh cafe on Sunday afternoon, a different man was playing rollicking music on the octopus piano while half a dozen people sat on the benches for his impromptu concert.

It all ends on August 30, so get there while you can. One piano will remain - the grand at Shoreline City Hall will stay in place for future concerts and events. Pianos are at Darrell's Tavern, Central Market, Spartan gym, Richmond Beach shopping center, and one other location.

Piano Time 2012 Performances August 19, 21, 23

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Piano Time performances:
  • Sunday Jazz at Haggen NW Fresh on the Octavia Rising, noon-2
  • Tuesday Jazz at Gateway Plaza on Keyboard Skydance, noon-1
  • Thursday Kids and Contemporary at Spartan on Playful Produce, 3-5
There are three chances in the coming week to catch scheduled performances on the Piano Time pianos.

On Sunday, August 19th, jazz pianist Brian Kinsella will be performing on Octavia Rises, the giant blue octopus piano at Haggen NW Fresh from noon to 2pm. Kinsella is an exceptionally prolific performer and recording artist whose debut record, Omen (2002), featured Mark Taylor on saxophones and Jay Thomas on trumpet and flugelhorn. In the Seattle rock quartet M. Bison, Brian performs as composer, vocalist, and keyboardist. He’s performed in theatrical productions and with a variety of bands, including the Olympia quartet Silo, and has self-produced hip-hop records. Brian is also active member of the Seattle Pianist Collective and has taught jazz to all ages.

On Tuesday, August 21st, from noon to 1pm, local attorney and Jazz Walk founder, Keith McClelland will be entertaining the lunchtime listeners on the elegant, gold Keyboard Skydance piano located at the Gateway Center. McClelland has been a professional musician and entertainer since he was 13. He has played piano and drums in a variety of sized ensembles and counts as one of his favorite experiences playing honky-tonk piano at Tweet Sie Railroad tourist attraction in Blowingrock, NC. Look for him and Keyboard Skydance by Shoreline artist Jennifer Carroll, near the flagpole in front of Toni and Guy located near N 185th and Midvale.

The third performance next week will be on the Playful Produce piano at the Spartan Recreation Center on Thursday, August 23rd, 3 – 5pm. Playing the keyboard on Playful Produce is yet another healthful activity that visitors to the recreation center love. Peter V Stevens, co-founder of the Seattle Pianist Collective, is back for a second performance that includes music for kids, contemporary, classical and original compositions. Stop by on your way to or from exercise class or picking up your kids from camp and listen for a while for sounds from near and far.

Did you miss the opening Arts al Fresco event? The piano location poster including scheduled performances, photos, and locations, is on the City’s Special Events website.

Painted Pianos and Ed

The Painted Pianos! The best thing in town: watching people listening to the ones who step forward to play is part of the charm: lots of smiles, gathering to listen and  appreciative applause. Ed Cruver got to four of the eight pianos, planning to get to all eight soon. His music brought smiles, applause and even a dancer (who might have been 15 months old!).

Word has it that Ed is hot on the trail of the last two pianos. Ed and Jon Ann may be the only people in Shoreline who know the location of all eight pianos.

Painted Pianos: no fear of tentacles

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Natalie Ositis fearlessly plays the painted piano, with no regard for the octopus coming out of the top or the tentacles reaching everywhere. Even the dappling of the sun (that bright light in the sky) adds to the underwater appearance.

But Natalie? "She particularly loved the tentacles," said mom Kim Ositis, who took the photo.

Piano Time 2012 Performances Friday and Saturday, August 10th, 11th

Friday Noon Brick Road Performance

There are two chances this week to catch scheduled performances on the Piano Time pianos.  On Friday, August 10th, take your lunch out to the Park at Town Center at N 175th and Midvale and listen to Karin Kajita on piano with Tony Grasso on trumpet playing some lively jazz. They’ll be entertaining on the Red Brick Road just north of Walgreens from noon-1:30 p.m.  This bright yellow piano painted by Shoreline artist Kim Bateman is called the Werner Café Piano so having lunch while you listen is a perfect accompaniment.

Kajita is an accomplished jazz musician trained in performance and arranging at the University of Washington. She is the leader of the Karin Kajita Jazz Quintet and performs at local festivals including Bumbershoot, the Shoreline Arts Festival and the Evergreen State Fair.  She has performed throughout the United States, in Japan and on European and Alaskan cruise lines.  Currently she can be heard on a regular basis around Seattle at such venues as the 1201 3rd Avenue Building and the Sorrento Hotel.  In addition to heading her own band, Kajita also plays with the Hammon/Esvelt Quintet and Finn Hill Jazz, and accompanies jazz vocalists Emily McIntosh and Kay Bailey.

Following graduation from the Naval School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia, Tony Grasso played throughout the country with the US Navy Band.  He has been a regular performer with various groups at Bumbershoot, the Folklife Festival and Earshot Jazz Festival.  Tony is the leader of “The Tony Grasso Saxophone Quartet?” which features compositions by Tony that sound like a form of chamber free jazz lined with layered contrapuntal patters and splintered sharp fragments of sound.

Grasso is a member of the Manghis Khan band playing a fusion of Latin and African music, as well as a member of the Karin Kajita Jazz Quintet, which performs primarily hard bop and Karin’s originals.  This is a not-to-be missed noontime concert!

Saturday Happy Hour at the Jazzy Jive Piano

The next day, Saturday, August 11th from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m, Peter Vukmirovic Stevens, an award- winning composer and pianist from Seattle, will be playing on the Jazzy Jive piano, CJ Swanson, artist, on Aurora Ave N at N 182nd Street near Darrell’s Tavern. Stevens is co-founder and a member of the Seattle Pianist Collective, a group that performs adventurous and unique recitals featuring well known and lesser known works by composers from the 19th through 21st centuries.

Stevens’ own compositions include works ranging from solo piano to symphony orchestra and reflect influences from contemporary art, literature, extensive travels and ethnomusicology. He has also written for and collaborated with a wide variety of ensembles, performers and regional television projects. In his spare time he is an avid traveler to far away and remote places. Stop by and listen for a while to hear these places reflected in his eclectic musical selections.

Did you miss the opening Arts al Fresco event on Thursday?  The performance schedule and piano location map is on the City’s website.

Painted Pianos: Keys to a Fun Event

Saturday, July 28, 2012

Shoreline artist K J Bateman works on her Yellow Piano
This piano will be played by Deems Tsutakawa at Piano Time

Piano Time-Shoreline debuts August 2nd!   Local jazz luminaries Bill Anschell and Deems Tsutakawa will be tickling the ivories on artist-painted pianos at Shoreline City Hall and the Park at Town Center from 6:00-8:30 that evening for the opening Arts al Fresco event.

Adding to the fun will be the Nightingale Dancers, featuring Joyce Lehner, Susan Knudson, and Elizabeth Kellog, who will be using Jennifer Carroll's choreography as a thematic guide for jazzy improvisations.

Seattle native Bill Anschell returned to the Shoreline area in 2002 after spending 25 years studying, composing, and performing across the country and around the world. Anschell has played and/or recorded with a host of jazz greats including Richard Davis, Ron Carter, Benny Golsen and Russell Malone. During the 1990’s his trio’s highlights included the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the Montreux Atlanta Festival and four extensive tours of South America.  In 2001 his piano work was featured in the soundtrack of the PBS movie, “Old Settler.” Since 2003, Anschell’s original compositions have received widespread cable and network exposure, appearing on programs including BC’s “The West Wing” and HBO’s acclaimed series “The Wire.”

As a Seattleite, Anschell had the honor of playing a weekly gig with Northwest jazz legend Floyd Standifer for the final two years before his passing.  In 2005, Anschell received a Golden Ear Award as the “Northwest Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year,” and in 2006 his trio was named the “Best Northwest Acoustic Jazz Ensemble.”  Golden Ears are administered by Earshot Jazz based on open voting by the Seattle jazz community. Anschell has also performed in Shoreline for the Arts Council and is a repeat performer at the North City Jazz Walk.

Deems, a member of a well-known Seattle arts family, has established himself internationally as a distinctive and imaginative writer, arranger, producer and bandleader, as well as explosive solo pianist. With his roots planted firmly in an Asian American upbringing, Deems' music has evolved into a delectable blend of R/B, pop and mainstream jazz that he calls "contemporary soul jazz."  His instrumental hit single Tough Tofu has achieved worldwide airplay.

One good listen to this artist's incredible music will take the listener on a rhythm ride through a myriad of modern emotions and sensual pleasures that Deems promises will soothe your soul. He says, "anything good that can happen will happen so please enjoy my music and as I always promise you, you'll love it!”

Within the past year, Jennifer Carroll’s choreography has been seen in NY, Boston, Cherry Valley (CA,) Bangladesh, and the Good Sheperd Center and Broadway Performance Hall in Seattle. The Nightingale Dancers have been seen in a wide variety of venues, including proscenium theatre (On the Boards etc), street parades, art festivals, galleries, schools, charity auctions, and bars. Perhaps you’ve even seen them as dancing crayons.

Anschell and Deems will be performing throughout the evening, but during breaks you are welcome to play a tune as well.  So, come on out to Arts al Fresco on August 2nd and be part of the action!
