Radio controlled model aircraft
The Marymoor Radio Control Club flew their model aircraft and drones.

You have to fly to play catch with a robot

The Shorewood Robotics Club brought a robot who played catch with the kids.

Is it dark yet?

The neighborhoods ran a slide show, gave out raffle prizes, and entertained the crowd until it was dark enough to show the movie.

Robots are coming to Outdoor Movie Night

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Shorewood High School's Team Pronto likes a challenge and for the last four years, they've competed with thousands of other teams worldwide in a competition put on by an organization called FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).

On Saturday, August 25, Team Pronto will show off two of their creations as part of the pre-movie entertainment at Ballinger-North City Neighborhoods' 4th annual Outdoor Movie Night.

Teams have 6 weeks to build a robot.  Team Pronto has built robots that can play soccer, tic-tac-toe, and this year, shoot hoops.  The team has about 40 members and includes freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  It is supervised by Mr. Wesley Proudlove, Shorewood's autoshop teacher.

Students work in the autoshop, brainstorming with teammates, building prototypes for parts of the robot, and learning how to use the tools in the shop.  Though they have some amazing mentors — engineers at Boeing and students at the UW — the entire robot is hand-built by the students.

2011 Team Pronto basketball competition
The hard work is not without rewards.  In 2011, the team made it into the quarterfinals in competitions in Seattle and Portland and won an award for innovation in design with their "voodoo arm" controller.  In 2012, they competed in Seattle at the end of March, and then in Spokane in the beginning of April.

So, come and see these creations in action and then find a seat on the grass and get ready for this year's movie, Puss in Boots.  Other pre-movie activities include games, face-painting, and crafts.  They'll be music. Concessions will be selling drinks, snack items, glowsticks, and extra raffle tickets to improve your odds at winning one of this year's fabulous prizes.

Gates open at 7pm at Aldercrest Annex (NE 200th St in Shoreline).  Admission is free.  Saturday August 25.

Local teen and string bands to play at Outdoor Movie Night

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Ballinger and North City Neighborhoods host their 4th annual Outdoor Movie Night on Saturday, August 25, 7pm at Aldercrest on NE 200th St in Shoreline. This year's movie is Puss in Boots.

Local teen band, The Accountants, will start the evening with their own unique style of music influenced by the Alternative Rock and Indie-Folk of their Seattle roots. Formed in 2011 for a school talent show, the band's music brings together a mix of dueling guitars, powerful drums, moving bass, and unique vocals.  The band's five current members aspire to play local shows but if you can't wait, check out YouTube for music, practices and behind the scenes clips.  You can also follow them on Facebook

Our other band is another newcomer to this event. The McGee String Band is a small group, but they have a great time playing music together. They identify their style as Old Songs and Cajun Music.

Both bands will be part of our pre-movie entertainment. Other activities include face-painting, crafts and, this year, a robotics demonstration. Concessions will be selling drinks, snack items and glowsticks. And if you're feeling lucky, take a chance at winning a really terrific prize at our raffle.  Admission is free.

Update: Rain or Shine Outdoor Movie Night, Saturday, August 7, 7:30 pm

Friday, August 6, 2010

Update: Rain or shine, the Ballinger and North City Outdoor Movie Night will take place.  Remember that you live in the Northwest - dress in layers and bring sunscreen and umbrellas.  Bring blankets to sit on and to wrap around yourselves if necessary.

Get your popcorn and treats at the food tables and enjoy the family movie night.

Original article:
‘The perfect summer movie!’ ‘A hit the size of Bigfoot,’ acclaimed movie critics upon release of Harry and the Hendersons, filmed in Seattle and released by Universal Studios in the summer of 1987.

On Saturday, August 7, Ballinger and North City Neighborhood Associations will delight a second generation of local moviegoers with this funny, touching, film shown on a large outdoor movie screen.

Harry and the Hendersons is a heartwarming story of a Seattle family on their way home from a camping trip, who accidentally run over a giant, wild creature that changes their lives. Chock-full of humor geared to both kids and grown-ups, those who found this movie endearing as kids are sure to enjoy it again as adults.

Admission is FREE and everyone is welcome. Gates open at 7:30 pm. Bring a blanket, pillow or low chair to mark your spot. Dance to the lively music of North City’s own Cajun Jamsters, or just enjoy visiting with family, friends and neighbors. There will be kid’s crafts and activities to captivate the 10-and-under set, while behind the movie screen, City staff and teen volunteers from The Center, (Shoreline’s eastside teen program) will host a pick-up game of kickball geared to tweens and teens.

You’ll want to bring along a couple of bucks to spend at the Neighborhood Snack Bar on movie popcorn, candy and soda, and visit the Ballinger and North City info booth to sign up for the door prize drawing and pick up info on neighborhood happenings, Blockwatch, and emergency preparedness.

You’ll also need a blanket or lawn chair, extra layers of clothing for the evening chill, and a flashlight. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted.

For those who live nearby, walking is recommended. Neighbors who drive are encouraged to car pool. Parking is available with limited handicap access. Follow the signs from Ballinger Way NE and 25th Ave NE. All movie-goers should plan to be seated by 8:45 p.m. The movie begins at dusk.

The August 7 event is the city’s second-ever Outdoor Movie Night in celebration of National Night Out Against Crime—thanks to a Shoreline Neighborhood Mini-Grant.

Harry and the Hendersons is a 110-minute Steven Spielberg production, directed by William Dear, starring John Lithgow, Don Ameche, Lainie Kazan, and David Suchet. It’s rated PG, although parents of small children should be aware that the film does contain mild violence and some swearing. Production services for Outdoor Movie Night are provided by Epic Events and Promotions of Bellingham.

For more information, call 206-437-9118 or visit the neighborhood websites for Ballinger or for North City.
