Obituary: Jerry Pickard

Jerry Pickard
Pickard, Jerome Dean "Jerry," 82 , of Lake Forest Park, Sunday Sept 13, 2020

After graduating from Cass High School in Cartersville Georgia in 1958, he joined the Navy. At the end of his four year tour he was a crewmember on a P3 Orion, flying Sub Patrol between the Aleutian Islands and Russia. They would fly past Russian planes close enough that both sides would make rude gestures at each other through the windows. He also flew the Florida to Cuba patrol.

When he got out of the Navy, he joined the Army Reserves at what was then Ft. Lewis.

He was a proud military supporter and active member of American Legion Starr Sutherland, Jr. Post 227 in Shoreline. He served for a number of years as the Historian / Photographer and several annual terms as Assistant Adjutant.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years Jeanette, eldest son Jerold A. Pickard, daughter Jennifer Pickard, granddaughter Ame Rosenbalm, grandson Johnathan Pickard-Gilyeat, and younger brother Danney Pickard.

He was predeceased by his younger son Jeff Pickard on August 5, 2018 and his younger brother Dickey in 1970.

Retired from the Shoreline School District as the custodian for Shorecrest High School.

Jerry was an active reporter and photographer for the Shoreline Area News for a decade. A gardener and collector, his flowers and birds were frequent subjects of his photography. He collected coffee mugs, pins, magnets, and wind spinners.

Jerry was a talented cook, doing most of the cooking at home. He was usually in the kitchen at the Post pancake breakfasts and at the grill for the Post barbecues.

In the Army National Guard Jerry won the "Conley Award" as the "Best Cook" for 10 years in a row, from 1978 to 1988.

Most every Sunday, Jerry would make a Very Special Breakfast for the Family.

He was the scoutmaster for his boys' scout troop, participating in camp outs and all their activities. In 1982, when his boys became Eagle Scouts, Jerry was made an Honorary Eagle Scout. They all worked to create the original Eagle Scout Park in Lake Forest Park.

With his daughter Jennifer, he was deeply involved with the League Of American Wheelmen Bicycle Club. From 1976 to 1986 they made many weekend bike rides, riding as far north as Mount Vernon. Jennifer had an early interest in photography, so when she was 12, Jerry built her a dark room.

Jerry was involved with Mountlake Christian School from 1983 to 1988, serving as the Treasurer.

He was buried in a private ceremony at Acacia on September 25, 2020.

A memorial open to the public is planned to be held by American Legion Post 227 sometime after restrictions on large gatherings lessen.

Please consider a contribution to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Gov. Inslee statement on the passing of former Sen. Slade Gorton

Saturday, August 22, 2020

Former Senator Slade Gorton
1928 - 2020

Gov. Jay Inslee issued the following statement after learning of the passing of former U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton on Wednesday:

“Trudi and I join all Washingtonians in mourning the loss of Sen. Slade Gorton. Slade loved this state and spent decades in its service.

“We worked together representing Washington in Congress and, while we didn’t always agree, he leaves an important legacy for the state and the nation.

“In the U.S. Senate, Slade was an influential member of the Armed Services Committee, where his own service in the Air Force and the Army gave him a deep understanding of the military and the people who serve our country.

“Slade was an important voice in pushing for the clean-up of Hanford, and he fought for health care, the arts and transportation solutions. He worked to keep orca whales out of captivity and in Washington's waters.

"His leadership on the 9/11 Commission put aside partisanship to help our country start to heal and prevent future terrorist attacks.

"When Slade served as Washington's attorney general, he argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and helped to promote women in the legal field, including former Gov. Christine Gregoire. His career in public service began in the Washington State House of Representatives, where he quickly earned the respect of his colleagues and worked his way up to House majority leader.

“I send deep condolences to his family and friends. Washington state flags will be lowered in his honor on the day of his memorial service.”

Marvin Bruce Shreve, Jr. "Chip" 54 years old

Chip and Shilo

Marvin Bruce Shreve, Jr....Chip. 54 years old. He leaves his beloved dog Shilo.

The Inuits have fifty words for snow. I am wishing this morning that there were more words in English for sadness.... grief... hopelessness... regret.

When my son Eric and I met Chip at the old Kellogg.... Chip would be in his old Jeep Cherokee drinking "tall boys" and chain smoking hand rolled with pipe tobacco. Shilo would be running like the wind. When she had been out of sight for awhile... Chip would honk the horn and she would reappear.

At that time, Chip had been living in an old trailer visible from Kellogg and the owner had been trying to get him out for a long while. Finally, that happened. Chip bought a dilapidated RV and lived in that for a short while till one drunken night... he sold it for a hundred bucks. Which left him and all his stuff and Shilo in the old Cherokee.

In the beginning, Chip would join us on our walk around the track. Son Eric always holding his old mom's hand and Chip would take my other hand and swing our arms as we walked. Him and Eric being the same age. Truth be told, I did not like Chip holding my hand but it was obvious it gave him joy and connection and it cost me nothing. His lifestyle and sometimes volatile personality left him seemingly very alone. He fought in Vietnam... it was not hard to guess what we did not discuss.

Shilo was not spayed. Last fall we asked Chip if he would consent to us taking her in for that and he agreed. Then we kept her for her recovery and it became harder and harder for us to think of returning her to the Cherokee. Chip was not okay with that and "went off" on us.... trying to steal his dog. Understandable.... he loved Shilo and she was it for him.

Chip was found dead in the Cherokee yesterday. It has been so hot and sadly I had given no thought to that. Dehydration, most likely. The reason we don't leave our dogs in the car when it is hot. I know no details beyond that other than Shilo was there when he was found and now it is not known what happened to that beautiful shiny black and white girl. Fortunately, we also had her "chipped" and Eric's info....so hopefully.

Always, obits singing the praises of lives well lived. I cannot bear the thought of Chip being gone and only... POOF. I have no clue, nor does anyone.... but I hope and pray that Chip has been welcomed HOME.

P.S. Shilo has been found hanging out with a group of teenagers.... is in a good place and a good home will be found for her.

--Judith Muilenburg

Correction: Chip sold his RV for $100 not $1

Emergency crews were summoned to Lake Ballinger in Mountlake Terrace on Sunday evening, July 19, 2020 when the family of 33 year old Ismael Mazariegos Barreda lost sight of him in the lake.

Rescue crews were unable to locate him. Divers were called in and on Monday, they recovered his body.

A GoFundMe page has been set up.

The Artist has Departed: In Memorial of Ray Gerring

June and Ray Gerring
The Artist has Departed: In Memorial of Ray Gerring
By Jenna Nand

I would like to tell you about my friend Ray. He was a painter who eventually went blind, a WWII veteran who served in the Air Corps, and a local author who memorialized the early 20th Century Seattle he grew up in.

Ray was a slender, birdlike man. By the time I knew him, Ray’s eyesight was failing and he walked with a cane. But his blue eyes shone with humor and mischief nonetheless.

Ray and I would often walk together after our writers group’s meetings, his hands clasped in mine as I helped support his slow, careful steps. He dressed like the gentleman he was, with a jaunty little cap perched on his head.

I remember Ray’s stories about Seattle in the 1930s and ‘40s, the Seattle he had come of age in. He wrote two short story collections (Tales From The Emerald City and Milo’s Brain) full of mayhem and murder in the Pacific Northwest. I tried to pay Ray for his books, because they entertained me so, but he refused to take a dime from me.

It was fitting that Ray was a writer because Ray was certainly a character. He will be missed by all of us in his writer’s group, EPIC Writers Group. Ray departed from this world on April 13, 2020, survived by his loving wife, June, who faithfully edited his manuscripts and drove Ray to each of our meetings.

As we continue to gather and critique each other’s work, Ray’s memory will be a blessing to us all.

Purple flowers

Monday, March 2, 2020

A little patch of purple flowers showed up in my yard this week.

They remind me of the violets my mother used to grow in delicate china teacups on the windowsill of our kitchen window.

She passed about this time three years ago and I wonder if she just stopped by to say hello.

Obituary: Margaret (Maggie) Mae Hopper 1924-2019

Friday, February 14, 2020

Margaret (Maggie) Mae Hopper, 95, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on December 7, 2019 leaving a life well lived.

Born on June 6, 1924 in Williston, ND, to William (Guy) and Sophie Head, Maggie’s years through high school were lived in Malta, Montana after her father’s job relocation. She enjoyed those years with her one-year-younger brother Merwin as well as brothers Dwayne and Bill who were born 12 and 13 years later. All three were her pride and joy.

After graduating from Malta High School in 1942, Maggie left Malta for St. Paul, Minnesota to attend St. Paul Bible Institute. Homesickness soon returned Maggie to Malta until friends beckoned her to Seattle where she began her career. She attended both Simpson Bible Institute and a local business school while in Seattle.

Maggie used her vocal gift in many ways throughout her life. She used her trained voice doing local choir and solo work as well as singing with the Melody Trio which had a weekly radio program in the 40’s and 50’s in Seattle on KTW1250. She used her gift to minister to many in various churches and other locations. She spoke fondly of singing in the Billy Graham Crusade choirs in Seattle in 1951 and Tacoma in 1983.

In 1960, while working as a bookkeeper for Northwest Builders’ Hardware, Maggie met Kenneth H. Hopper. They married in 1961 and welcomed daughter Elizabeth (Beth) Ann in 1963. It was then that Maggie switched from career bookkeeper to volunteer and homemaker.

Maggie Hopper
After a brief company transfer to Tucker, GA, Ken and Maggie settled back in the greater Seattle area in 1967. In 1969, the family relocated to Olympia, WA where Maggie became very involved with her church and area groups such as the Seattle Children’s Orthopedic Guild.

Maggie was suddenly widowed in March, 1982, at the young age of 57 when she lost her dear Ken. It changed life significantly, but Maggie remained strong in her faith and ministry to others. She cared for her mother into her later years until her death in 1999.

Maggie relocated back to the Seattle area in 1999 where she could be closer to her daughter’s family and enjoy the following years with grandchildren and dear friends. She was a constant sideline presence at her grandchildren’s sporting events as well as attending their music concerts and numerous school events.

Maggie is survived by and will be deeply missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Dale Lydin, grandchildren Daniel Lydin and Kate Lydin, all from the greater Seattle area; brothers and sisters-in-law Dwayne and Shirley Head of San Luis Obispo, CA and Bill and Florence Head of Bloomington, MN; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents and husband, Maggie was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law Merwin and Dolores Head.

Services for Barnetty Kushner Sunday at the Shoreline Elks

Thursday, December 12, 2019

Barnetty Kushner
1978-2019
Barnetty Kushner, 41, passed peacefully on December 2, 2019 at 10:55am surrounded by beloved friends and family at NW Hospital in Seattle, WA. Her amazing spirit and determination were on full display as she waged a four-year battle with her nemesis, cancer.

Born on November 11, 1978 in Costa Rica, her father moved the family to the United States on July 4, 1980. Graduating from Golden Valley High school in 1996, her signature adventurous spirit inspired her to move to Seattle, Washington in 2006 to find her groove.

Like her parents she loved the fashion industry and was soon working part time as a personal shopper at Macy's department stores. Less than a year after settling in Seattle she met the love of her life and long-time partner Joshua Watt.

With her education in Business, she soon advanced in the ranks at Allstate insurance where she became a top selling agent with the company. That drive sparked her entrepreneur spirit when she started her own business with LulaRoe and soon grew her business and became a sponsor and mentored others.

Most importantly, Barnetty devoted her magnanimous life to her family and friends, but most of all, her favorite role was Mom to her beloved son Vincent, born in 2008.

Spend five minutes with Barnetty, and you would know three things. She loved her son more than anyone has ever loved their child, she had a heart so huge the whole world could fit in it and she had a smile and a laugh that could melt ice and warm any heart.

She also made everyone around her feel at home. Barnetty had a special gift of making people feel loved and accepted for who they were. As friends of Barnetty, we recognized there was an energy, an aura that enveloped you when you were with her. She made you feel special. She made you feel wanted, and she made you feel like you mattered.

It is Barnetty's gifts of friendship and our love for her that we will carry in our hearts always. As an homage to her life and passing, we strive to emulate her love and kindhearted nature to all we meet. May we remember the love she gave us and may we pass it forward like a ripple.

Barnetty is survived by her long-time partner Joshua, son Vincent, mother Jetty, step father Eddy, and brothers Kevin, Abner, Jamie and David. She was preceded in death by her father Fred and sister Lisa.

Barnetty was most concerned with the welfare of young Vincent and Josh should she pass. Josh has spent the last few years dedicated solely to caring for her and Vincent in her time of need. To honor her final request of taking care of the family, please consider donating to either a GoFundMe site or to MealTrain

The memorial is scheduled on Sunday, December 15th at  2:00pm at the Shoreline Elks Lodge, 14625 15th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155.

Feel free to bring a dessert to share.
